New Delhi, Dec 16: Noting that the country was witnessing
‘disturbing trends’ as ‘politics of fear’ was gripping the country, former
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said the country expected Mr Rahul
Gandhi to sustain the ‘politics of hope’ that the country needed.
Addressing Congress leaders and party workers at
AICC headquarters at a function where Rahul Gandhi assumed the post of party
president, Dr Singh said,'Rahulji today is taking over as the president of our
party at a time, when there are certain disturbing trends noticeable in our
polity.'He said a distinguished academician recently pointed out that 'there are dangers that politics of fear will take over the politics of hope' in the country.
“Rahulji, we depend upon you to transform that the fear of politics to sustain the politics of hope, which this country needs,” he said.
The former Prime Minister also praised Sonia Gandhi saying that under her leadership, the UPA Government took some ‘historic decisions’ such as MNREGA and RTI in 10 years of rule.
“The growth rate of the country was all time high and the average growth rate was 7.8 percent per annum. Some unique social legislations were enacted such as MNRGEA, RTI and several other social legislations were enacted under the guidance of Sonia Gandhi”, Dr Singh said.
He said Rahul Gandhi had been trained for a long period and had been looking after many of the activities of the congress party for many years.
“Rahulji brings to this office of the Congress president a new sense of dedication, a new sense of commitment, a sense of looking after the leadership role with courage and humility”, added Dr Singh.
Former Prime Minister further added that the country have problems of poverty, ignorance, disease, which still afflict millions and millions of people and Rahul could reach to everyone.
“Rahulji you have traveled all over the country, you know the problems first hand. Under your leadership the party will reach new heights,” he said. UNI
