KUPWARA, DECEMBER 23: District Development Commissioner Kupwara, Khalid Jahangir today convened a meeting of District Advisory Committee for Pre-conception and Pre-natal sex Diagnostic Techniques (prohibition of sex selection) Act.
          Threadbare discussion was held on various aspects of the Act including the issuance of registration certificates for various ultrasound clinics, ensuring continual monitoring of these establishments, enhancing accountability to prevent violations etc.
          DHO Nodal officer, Chief Planning officer, District Social Welfare officer, Medical Superintendent Kupwara, Senior Gynecologist District Hospital Handwara, Advocate Bilal Ahmad, Social activist Saifu Din Mir and concerned officials participated in the meeting.  
          The DDC asked the concerned to ensure regular monitoring of these establishments for ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the aforesaid Act. Expressing concern about the adverse sex ratio prevalent in the district, the Committee observed that stringent action under the law is required against ultrasound clinics which are involved in unscrupulous practices.
          The Committee directed for the immediate closure of any unregistered ultrasound clinic in the district. The Nodal officer was further directed to immediately process cases for renewal of registration on urgent basis, so that appropriate decision is taken accordingly. 

          Exhorting the need for better coordination between the concerned agencies and for generating mass awareness about the Act, the DDC said that the need is to bring about a change in the mindsets of the people to check the declining sex ratio. He said stringent laws along with motivating the people towards a right perspective is imperative to bring about social change and deter the people from indulging in undesirable practices.
