New Delhi, Dec 27: While welcoming the resolution of the stalemate in Parliament caused by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s allegations against former Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh made during the Gujarat elections, the Congress on Wednesday, however, denied
that it was done under any pressure from the Government.
Talking to reporters here, Leader of the Opposition in the
Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said,'there is no question of succumbing to
pressure. However, we did not want to continue with the logjam any further. We
felt that the Government was feeling happier over the impasse as they and
especially the ministers do not have to face the question hour.
Also, there were several pressing issues of national and international importance happening that we wanted to be taken up. So, we wanted to close this issue of the PM’s statement against Dr Singh, the former Vice-President and former Army chief. Though, we had demanded that the PM withdraw his remarks against Dr Singh, which was a serious charge leveled against the former Prime Minister, he did not do so.
However, since Leader of the house Arun Jaitley has said the Prime Minister had no intention to question the contribution of Dr Singh and former vice-president Hamid Ansari to the nation, 'we did not want to continue the stalemate any further.’’
Mr Azad said the most pressing issue that the Congress wants to be taken up in Parliament is the treatment meted out by Pakistan to the kin of Kulbhushan Jadhav.
'We wanted the issue of the humiliation of the kin of Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistan to be taken up today but the Chairman said that it could not be held before the resolution of the issue of Congress objection to PM’s remarks against Dr Singh. So, we decided to resolve the issue. Now that the issue has been resolved, we have decided to take up the issue of Pakistan’s humiliation of Kulbhushan’s family in Parliament tomorrow,’’ he said.
Mr Azad said the Congress had been demanding that the kin of Jadhav be allowed to meet with him in the Pakistani jail where he has been lodged.
'However, we did not know that in the name of a meeting, the Pakistani Government would indulge in a ‘farcical’ exercise and would humiliate his wife and mother.
'It was nothing but a ‘farcical’ meeting. Also, by insulting the kin of Jadhav, Pakistan has insulted the people of India. We cannot tolerate this. It has been decided that a discussion be held on the issue in the House tomorrow,' Mr Azad said.
The week-long stalemate between the Government and the opposition on the issue was resolved today with
Leader of the House and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley saying that the remarks by the PM were not intended to question the contributions of Dr Singh or former Vice-President.
Mr Jaitley said,'On several occasions last week, the Leader of the Opposition has raised the issue of the PM’s speeches during the election campaign for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Many statements were made from both the sides during the elections .
'We wish to state that the PM did not intend to question the contributions made by Dr Manmohan Singh and former Vice President Hamid Ansari to this nation. Any impression created in this regard is erroneous,’’Mr Jaitley said. UNI
