Kolkata,
Dec 29: To save several varieties of small fish, the State Government has taken steps to release the hatchlings across
Bengal.
One quintal of hatchlings was released by the Fisheries
Minister at Sindrani in Bagda block in North 24 Parganas district, in the
presence of almost 3,000 fishermen in November.Among the varieties in danger are morola, kholse, tangra, pnuti, folui, koi, singi, magur, lyatha, chang, etc.
These fishes grow naturally in water bodies like streams and lakes. But over-fishing in places is leading to their depletion. Hence, the department has also started programmes to educate fishermen to not to over-fish and to not to fish during two months of the rainy season to give the time for the fishes to grow. UNI
