Kolkata, Dec 20: Former Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan was today released from the Presidency jail in the city after serving a six-month prison term, awarded to him by the Supreme Court for contempt of court.
“Justice Karnan was released from Presidency jail at around 1030 hours, ” former judge's lawyer Matthews J Nedumpara said.
Justice Karnan was lodged in Presidency jail on June 21 after West Bengal Police arrested him from Coimbatore on the previous night.
The judge retired on June 12.
He had earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first sitting high court judge to have been sentenced to jail.
Earlier, the Apex court sentenced him to six months in jail for contempt of court on May 9.
Karnan was a serving judge of Calcutta High Court at that time.
A seven-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar, had asked the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) to take Karnan, who was on a warpath with the Apex court for months, into custody. UNI
