JAMMU, DECEMBER 20: At a function
organized by the Rajya Sainik Board in connection with the Armed Forces Flag
Day Celebrations, at the Tiger Auditorium here today, Governor N.N. Vohra
complimented and thanked all individuals and organisations who are helping the
Rajya Sainik Board in raising funds for promoting the welfare of ex-Servicemen
and their families.
Governor observed that the Armed Forces Flag Day, observed
on 7th December every year,
is an important occasion to remember the valiant soldiers who sacrifice their
lives for protecting the territorial integrity of the nation. He lauded the
crucial role of the Armed Forces, both during war and in peace time, and
observed that their sacrifices were founded in their bravery, devotion and
dedication.
Governor stressed the need to make our civil society aware
about the role Army is playing in safeguarding our country
and maintaining a vigil along the over 15,000
km long land borders, which have two militarized frontiers.
Governor observed that it is our moral responsibility to take special care of
the families of our ex-Servicemen, particularly those of our martyrs and
expressed concern about the difficulties faced by the families of non pensioner
widows. He noted that consequent to his taking up the matter with Raksha Mantri
their pensions had been recently revised to Rs. 48,000 per annum. He noted that
we need to work hard to mitigate their sufferings by providing timely support.
Brig. (Retd.) Harcharan Singh, Director Rajya Sainik Board spoke about the
ongoing activities of the Rajya Sainik Board and funds raised.
The Governor presented cheques of Rs. 10,000 each to 34 war widows and prizes
to winners of painting and patriotic song competitions among school children
organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and
the Rajya Sainik Board. He also gave away Certificates of Appreciation to Jammu
citizens who are working for the welfare of ex-Servicemen and their families.
Brigadier T.K. Chopra, Station Commander; Sh. R.S. Chib, former Minister were
among the distinguished guests present on the occasion.
