New York, Dec 27: A cultural and educational organisation, based in neighbouring New Jersey, will
co-sponsor an international Hindi conference to be held at the Consulate
General of India here.
Ashok Oja, head of the Hindi Sangam Foundation, told UNI in
an interview that the conference, scheduled for September, will be the fifth of
its kind. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is expected to formally
inaugurate the meeting.
“The first was held in New York and the second was hosted by Rutgers University in New Jersey,” Mr Oja said in the telephone interview. “The 2016 conference took place at the New York consulate and Gitam University in Visakhapatnam played host to this year’s meet.”
Consul General Sandeep Chakravorty, who has announced several steps to promote the language, is to be the “patron” of the three-day event. January 13 will be celebrated at the consulate as Hindi Day when Janis Jensen of Kean University, Jennifer Eddy of Queens College and other experts will address the gathering. A scholar in Sanskrit and Hindi is expected to be appointed to conduct Hindi classes at the consulate.
The fourth conference was a success and could build a network of Hindi professionals in non-Hindi states of India and abroad, Mr Oja said, referring to the Visakhapatnam meet.
In the United States, Hindi language is taught at NYU, Columbia, University of California Los Angeles, University of Texas in Austin and several other educational institutions.
Mr Oja and Professor Gabriela Nik Ilieva, who teaches the language at New York University, along with others met the consul general in connection with the 2018 conference. UNI
