Patna, Dec 28: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who had parted ways with BJP four years back, having refused to accept Narendra Modi as the PM candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha election, in his dramatic move dumped grand alliance on July 26 to join hands with BJP for the formation of NDA government in the state which virtually changed the course of National politics, taking its shape for 2019 Lok Sabha election.
In June 2013, Mr Kumar had snapped 17 years long ties with BJP, when the party was gearing up to project Mr Modi as the PM candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha election, saying his views of projecting a leader of secular credential, broadly acceptable to all, was not accepted.
Mr Modi was then facing a lot of criticism for his alleged role of meting out excess by Gujarat police during Godhra violence in 2002, when he was the Chief Minister of the state.
Mr Kumar who was heading grand alliance Government in Bihar, voted to power in 2015 state assembly elections, dumped it on July 26 this year and joined hands with BJP again for formation of NDA government in the state.
The Grand alliance comprising JD(U), RJD and Congress came to existence before 2015 Bihar assembly elections to take on BJP which was then winning Assembly elections in one state after the other since Mr Modi became Prime Minister after Lok Sabha elections in 2014.
Both Mr Kumar and RJD president Lalu Prasad, who were arch rivals, joined hands, forgetting their past political bitterness, which was then a surprising development in politics. Mr Prasad while announcing the name of Mr Kumar as CM candidate of the grand alliance in 2015 Bihar assembly elections, had said that he consumed poison to defeat saffron forces.
People of Bihar extended their overwhelming support to grand alliance which triumphed assembly elections with more than two-third majority while BJP faced a crushing defeat.
When Mr Kumar dumped the grand alliance after heading its government for 20 months, RJD described it as insult to the mandate given by the people in last Bihar assembly elections. Mr Kumar defended his move to dump grand alliance and join hands with BJP, saying the decision was taken to protect the interest of the people and development of Bihar. UNI
