PM dedicates sentinel of the deep, INS Kalvari, Scorpene class submarine to nation

Mumbai, Dec 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, dedicated the sentinel of the deep, INS Kalvari, to the nation.

Kalvari, a potent Man o’ War capable of undertaking offensive operations spanning across the entire spectrum of maritime warfare, embodies cutting edge technology and compares favourably with the best in the world.
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and Vice-Admiral Girish Luthra were among those present at the commissioning ceremony here.
Describing Kalvari as the great example 'Make in India', the Prime Minister thanked France for its collaboration.
The first of the six Scorpene-class submarines INS Kalvari, made with French collaboration, has been built at the Mazagaon Dock Ltd.
The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai as part of 'Project-75' of the Navy.
Kalvari has an overall length of 67.5 metres and a height of about 12.3 metres. 
The hull form, the fin and the hydroplanes are specifically designed to produce minimum underwater resistance. It's 360 battery cells (each weighing 750 kg) power the extremely silent Permanently Magnetised Propulsion Motor. Its stealth is further enhanced through the mounting of equipment inside the pressure hull on shock absorbing cradles. 
INS Kalvari's undersea warfare capability comprises a cluster of advanced weapons and sensors integrated into the Submarine Tactical Integrated Combat System (SUBTICS). The sonar suite is Low Frequency Analysis and Ranging (LOFAR) capable enabling long rage detection and classification. Post classification, the submarine may choose to engage the enemy by utilising either the sea skimming SM 39 EXOCET missiles (Flying Fish in French) or the heavy weight wire guided Surface and Underwater Target (SUT) torpedoes. Towards self-defence, it is fitted with mobile C303/S anti-torpedo decoys.
INS Kalvari's attack and search periscopes are equipped with Infrared/ Low Light Level cameras and Laser Range finders. The boat also has her two 1250 kW MAN Diesel Engines for rapidly charging batteries. The submarine boasts of a highly advanced Combat Management System and a sophisticated Integrated Platform Management System.
The most potent platform to have been constructed in India, INS Kalvari represents a significant success for the 'Make in India' initiative. 
The second Scorpene submarine, INS Khanderi, is presently undergoing trials.
Erstwhile INS Kalvari, the first Indian submarine, was commissioned on 8 December, 1967, under the charge of Commander KS Subramanian at the Soviet seaport of Riga. Since then, the day is observed as 'Submarine Day'by the Indian Navy. Kalvari embarked on her maiden passage from Riga on 18 April, 1968 and arrived at Vishakhapatnam July 16, 1968 covering a total of 19,000 nautical miles en route.
