Chennai, Dec 21: Polling in the by-election to the high-profile R K Nagar Assembly constituency began at 0800 hrs on Thursday morning.
Moderate to brisk polling was reported in all the 258 polling booths, where an estimated 2.19 lakh voters were expected to cast their ballots in the bypoll, necessitated
to fill the vacancy caused by the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who represented the seat twice in 2015 and 2016.
A large number of queues were seen in front of all the polling booths, with women turning up in good numbers.
There were 59 candidates in the fray, including a Woman.
But the main contest would be between ruling AIADMK heavyweight and former Minister E Madhusudhanan, political greenhorn N Maruthu Ganesh of the main
Opposition DMK, ousted leader and V K Sasikala's nephew T T V Dhinakaran, who is contesting as an Independent, and K Nagaraj of BJP.
Maruthu Ganesh was among the earlier voters who stood in the queue and cast his vote. Unprecedented security arrangements were made for the polling.
The entire polling process was being webcast live on Election Commission's website.
Apart from 15 companies of para-military forces, more than 2,500 security personnel, over 200 CCTV cameras, 75 flying squads, 21 static surveillance
teams were deployed on poll duty. The elections were earlier scheduled to be held in
April, but was rescinded following complaints after Income-Tax raids at the residence of Health Minister C Vijayabaskar revealed large scale distribution of money to the voters. The counting of votes would be taken up on December 24. UNI
