Chennai, Mar 11 :  The AIADMK in Tamil Nadu Monday kick-started its candidate selection process for the April 18 Lok Sabha elections in the state, with the interview of ticket aspirants of ten constituencies.

The ruling party also invited applications from aspiring candidates for the by-polls to 18 Assembly segments, which will be held along with the parliamentary polls.

Elections to 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone Puducherry segment will be held on April 18, the second of the seven phases of polling across the country for a total of 543 seats.

On Monday, the AIADMK Parliamentary Board, whose members include party Coordinator and state Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, interviewed the aspiring candidates for 10 constituencies including Salem, Nilgiris and Coimbatore, a party release said.

The AIADMK is heading the NDA in Tamil Nadu, whose constituents are the BJP, PMK, DMDK, Puthiya Tamizhagam and Puthiya Neethi Katchi.

The party has allotted seven seats to PMK, five to the BJP, four to the Vijayakanth-led DMDK, and one each to Puthiya Tamizhagam and Puthiya Neethi Katchi in the state, thus leaving 21 for itself as of now.

There are expectations that former Minister GK Vasan- led Tamil Maanila Congress may join the AIADMK front, giving the final shape to the combine that will take on the DMK-led alliance.

The lone Puducherry seat has been allotted to AINRC, headed by former chief minister N Rangasamy.

Further, the AIADMK invited application forms from aspirants for 18 Assembly seats in the state where bypolls are scheduled.

The filled-in forms and a fee of Rs 25,000 should be submitted on March 13 between 10 a.m and 6 p.m, it said.

The by-polls are considered crucial as it would have a bearing on the stability of the Palaniswami-led AIADMK government which needs to win a sizeable number of them to retain its majority in the 234-member House.

Bypolls would be held in Poonamallee, Perambur, Tiruporur, Sholinghur, Gudiyatham, Ambur, Hosur, Harur, Pappireddipapatti, Nilakkottai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Manamadurai, Andipatti, Periyakulam, Sattur, Paramakudi and Vilathikulam, he had said.

Of the 18 seats, sixteen had fallen vacant following the disqualification of ruling AIADMK MLAs loyal to rival party leader TTV Dhinakaran.

The by-poll to Tiruvarur seat has been necessitated by the death of sitting member and late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi while the Hosur seat fell vacant following the disqualification of Minister K Balakrishna Reddy after his conviction by a court in a decades-old criminal case.

Bypolls were not scheduled for Tiruparankundram, Ottapidaram and Aravakurichi constituencies, which are also vacant, in view of election petitions pending in the Madras High Court.       [Agencies]

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon on Wednesday as the two main political parties of Tamil Nadu -- the AIADMK and DMK -- held protests on the Cauvery river issue.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon on Wednesday as the two main political parties of Tamil Nadu -- the AIADMK and DMK -- held protests on the Cauvery river issue.

Soon after ministers laid listed papers on the table of the House, AIADMK members trooped into the Well carrying a banner that read 'protect the lives of Cauvery delta farmers'.

DMK members too entered the Well raising issues related to Cauvery river.

Chairman Venkaiah Naidu urged them to return to their seats. He said notices have been received from several parties for discussion on different issues on urgent importance.

The Chairman said though he has not allowed the issues to be raised under Rule 267 (suspension of business to take up a matter) all issues would be taken up for discussion.

As the two parties continued to protest, Naidu said only on Tuesday people in some states have shown their "confidence in democracy" and asked members to respect sentiments of the people.

"I am not going to be dictated in this way (protest)," Naidu said.

With protesting members not relenting, Naidu adjourned the House till noon.

Earlier, the House paid obituary reference to former US President George H W Bush who passed away on November 30.

Members also congratulated M C Mary Kom for winning gold in the Women's World Boxing Championship. Naidu said she has reached the pinnacle of sporting glory as she created history by winning six world gold medals.

The House also congratulated sports persons Sonia Chahal, Simranjit Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain for winning medals. PTI

Chennai, Sep 27: The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry probing the death of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has completed examining as many as 100 witnesses, with its tenure set to end next month.

Besides, as on September 25, 57 witnesses have been cross-examined and 11 more, including Apollo Hospitals doctors, will face questioning Thursday from the counsel for VK Sasikala, an aide of the former AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.

Significantly, Dr K S Sivakumar, the personal physician of Jayalalithaa, has been summoned to appear on September 28 for re-examination.

Sivakumar's next appearance will be his fifth and he has been asked by the panel to furnish a list of doctors the late leader consulted between 2014 and 2016 and the medication prescribed and followed by her.

Some of those summoned have sought adjournment, including Alok Kumar, a bank manager in Nilgiris district and two more people who are abroad.

Apollo Hospitals' radiologist Dr Meera and emergency doctor Thava Pazhani have been summoned to appear on September 28.

A few days ago, Dr Archana, a doctor at the Apollo Hospitals, where the former chief minister was admitted during her final days, told the panel that an audio clip released in May was indeed recorded at the hospital when she was being treated there.

Dr Snehasri, an emergency doctor too had deposed that when she went to the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa on September 22, 2016 (hours before her hospitalisation) the late leader was drowsy, but conscious.

AIADMK leader P Manoj Pandian, who appeared on September 25, blamed Sasikala during his cross-examination for the alleged "mysterious" circumstances surrounding the former chief minister's death.

Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2016 after being treated in the hospital for 75 days from September 22 for various ailments.

In September 2017, the state government had constituted the probe panel under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, mandating it to probe the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa's hospitalisation and also the treatment provided by the hospital until her demise.

The commission, whose term has been extended twice since then, had invited all those having "personal knowledge and direct acquaintance" to furnish information related to her.

Several persons, including present Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his followers, had earlier raised suspicions about the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa's death.

The Commission began its hearing on November 22, 2017 and Madurai-based DMK functionary P Saravanan deposed before the panel on that day.

He said he had brought to the panel's notice alleged discrepancies in press releases and the final discharge summary of the hospital where Jayalalithaa received treatment.

Chennai, Sep 19: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu Wednesday hit out at DMK President MK Stalin for levelling corruption charges against its government, saying he was making such allegations out of 'frustration.'

AIADMK mouthpiece 'Namathu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma' also recalled past corruption charges against the DMK, such as the 2G spectrum allocation scam and took a dig at Stalin for leading his party's protests on Tuesday from Chief Minister K Palaniswami's native district Salem.

Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam were "creating new awakening" in Tamil Nadu in the AIADMK rule, it said.

It alleged that following the demise of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in December 2016, "those who dreamt of the government falling and a split in the party are frustrated that their dreams have not come true."

"Stalin is making desperate attempts to somehow topple this government and become the Chief Minister," a write-up in the AIADMK mouthpiece said.

The leader of Opposition in the state Assembly made attempts to create 'violence' in the House "to create law and order problems", it charged, while referring to the chaotic scenes witnessed during the February 2017 confidence vote of the Palaniswami government, allegedly involving the Opposition party MLAs.

It said Stalin, whose DMK had staged black flag protests against Governor Banwarilal Purohit during his visits to districts to hold review meetings with officials, later petitioned the latter regarding alleged irregularities in the Highways Department in the wake of IT raids against a contractor.

Palaniswami holds, among others, the Highways portfolio.

"Frustrated that he has not received any success (politically) despite holding many protests and that people are not supporting him, he is levelling corruption charges from the Chief Minister's native place (Salem)," it said.

The mouthpiece lashed out at the DMK on a number of issues, including the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and land grab charges against former DMK Ministers during its 2006-11 rule.

An Opposition party should use the democratic right of holding protests for "just causes" and point out shortcomings which will be addressed by the government.

"Instead, levelling corruption charges and seeking the removal of the government... no opposition party in the world does this," it said.

Opposition DMK Tuesday staged state-wide protests against the "corrupt" AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, with party chief MK Stalin leading the charge in Salem.

Stalin had said "people of Tamil Nadu have not seen such a corrupt government in the history of the state" and called it a "slave" to the Centre.

Chennai, Sep 18: Opposition DMK Tuesday staged state-wide protests against the "corrupt" AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, with party chief MK Stalin leading the charge in Salem.

Besides Stalin, his son Udhayanidhi, sister Kanimozhi and senior DMK leaders including Durai Murugan and Dayanidhi Maran participated in demonstraions held across the state.

Leading the first protest after assuming the post of DMK President, Stalin launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his cabinet colleagues, levelling corruption charges against them.

At Salem, Palaniswami's native district, the DMK chief trained his guns against the Chief Minister.

He recalled that the DMK had earlier submitted a memorandum to state Governor Banwarilal Purohit detailing the alleged irregularities in the Highways Department in the wake of IT raids against a contractor.

Palaniswami holds, among others, the Highways portfolio.

Stalin also pointed out at the recent CBI raids at the residence of Health Minsiter C Vijayabaskar in connection with the probe into the alleged gutka scam.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had on September 5 carried out searches at around 40 locations in Tamil Nadu, including at the residences of state's health minister and the director general of police, in connection with the scam.

"People of Tamil Nadu have not seen such a corrupt government in the history of the state. It is a corrupt, slave government (to the Centre). It was the people who voted for this government. But today they are on the verge of frustration as they are facing many difficulties," he said.

Levelling a series of corruption charges against the ruling AIADMK, Stalin claimed that he had proof to back it up.

The state was facing issues like unemployment and law and order problems, he said, adding even women police personnel "are not safe."

The DMK leader was apparently referring to a sexual harassment case filed by a woman police officer against her senior, an IG level official, recently.

"The DMK has the big responsibility of saving Tamil Nadu from AIADMK. This protest is the first step towards that," Stalin said.

The DMK will "soon come to power" and act against these corruption charges, he said, adding his party was ready to "put an end" to the Palaniswami government.

Kanimozhi participated at a protest demo at Tindivanam in Villupuram district while Udhayanidhi Stalin, Managing Director of DMK mouthpice 'Murasoli,' took part in the demonstration here.

In Coimbatore, over 3,000 activists of various political parties led by DMK staged a demonstration seeking the resignation of 'tainted' state ministers facing corruption charges.

The speakers, led by party Deputy General Secretary, V P Duraisamy, also demanded the resignation of AIADMK Government, as majority of the ministers were allegedly involved in corruption.

There were charges against ministers like Vijayabaskar and S P Velumani, the workers, some of whom sported masks of the chief minister and ministers, said.

Dhanapal presented Demand Drafts (DDs) for a total sum of Rs 1,13,20,000 to the chief minister to be sent to the Kerala government for helping the flood-ravaged state, it said.

AIADMK has a total of 117 members, including the Speaker, in the 234-member Assembly.

The House also has one Nominated member from the Anglo-Indian community.

Puducherry, Aug 20: The AIADMK in Puducherry today urged the territorial government to immediately convene a special Assembly session and bring in a legislation to ensure 50 percent quota for government sponsored students in the private medical colleges in the Union Territory.

AIADMK legislature wing leader AAnbalagan told reporters here that presently the private medical colleges including deemed-to-be-universities were denying seats at 50 percent of quota for the local students.

"Seat sharing is done according to whims and fancies of the managements and most of the time the local students were not getting admission.

Seats are sold away for exorbitant prices to students from distant States," he alleged

There should be a law to curb this unjust and unfair practice on the part of the managements," he said.

Charging the government with 'keeping mum' on the issue, Anbalagan said parents and students associations should also come forward to press the rights of the students.

The AIADMK leader wanted a legislation to be enacted to ensure fifty percent quota for government sponsored students in private medical colleges.

"When the government could bring in a resolution to divest the nominated legislators of their right to vote on the floor of the House as was done in the recent budget session, there is no reason why a legislation on medical college admission issue could not be brought in," Anbalagan said.

He also sought the intervention of Lt Governor Kiran Bedi to do justice to the students.

Chennai, Aug 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to late DMK chief M Karunanidhi at the Rajaji Hall here today and briefly met members of his family.

Clad in white, Modi laid a wreath at Karunanidhi's feet and bowed before his mortal remains, paying his respect to the late leader.

He later consoled the DMK chief's family members, including his wife Rajathi and son M K Stalin.

Modi, who arrived here from New Delhi by a special flight earlier in the morning, was accompanied by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and state unit leaders of the BJP, besides those of the DMK and the AIADMK.

He later had a brief conversation with Rajathi.

He exchanged a few words with Stalin, the DMK's working president, gently patting him on the back in an apparent gesture of consoling him.

While leaving, Modi spoke to Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi, an MP, as Stalin joined him.

Karunanidhi, 94, died at a private hospital yesterday following prolonged illness.

The prime minister in his message had described the DMK chief as a prolific thinker and a deep-rooted mass leader who stood for regional aspiration and national progress.

Hyderabad, Aug 7: JD(U) president Nitish Kumar today reached out to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, requesting the support of TRS for his party lawmaker and NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh in the election to the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha.

The Bihar chief minister rang up the Telangana Rashtra Samithi president this morning and made the request, according to Rao's office.

Rao told him he would discuss the issue with his party colleagues and take a final decision, it said.

Kumar's call comes as the NDA and the Opposition appeared to be heading for a showdown in the election. The Opposition has given a clear indication that it will contest the August 9 election.

In the upper house, the BJP-led ruling alliance lacks a majority.

According to Opposition sources, Tiruchi Siva of DMK, Vandana Chavan of NCP and nominated member K T S Tulsi are front-runners for the post.

The support of regional parties such as the AIADMK, BJD, TRS and YSR Congress are crucial in the poll.

The post of the deputy chairman has been lying vacant since June this year, following the retirement of P J Kurien, who had been elected to the upper house of Parliament on a Congress ticket from Kerala.

The current strength of Rajya Sabha is 244 and support of 123 members would be needed for a win in the full house.

The BJP is the largest party in the house with 73 members. Its allies JD(U), Shiv Sena, Akali Dal have six, three and three members, respectively.

Besides the nominated and independent members affiliated to it, the BJP is banking on the support of 13, nine, six and two members of the AIADMK, BJD, TRS, YSR Congress respectively, its floor managers said.

If all four parties support the NDA candidate, then the numbers add up to 126.

However, if parties like BJD or TRS abstain from voting, then things will become more precarious for the ruling alliance.

Both these parties had abstained during a vote on the recent motion of no-confidence against the government in the Lok Sabha while the AIADMK had voted with the treasury benches.

The BJP is hoping to get support of four of the six independent members and three of the four nominated members.

The Congress has 50 members.

Chennai, Aug 2 : The ruling AIADMK today "relieved" its Rajya Sabha MP A Vijaykumar from a key party post in Kanyakumari and announced bifurcation of the local unit for administrative reasons.

Party Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami said Vijaykumar was being "relieved from the post of Kanyakumari (AIADMK) district secretary," but did not assign any reason for the change.

Considering administrative convenience, the party's Kanyakumari district unit was now being bifurcated as Kanyakumari East and West, each covering three Assembly segments.

S A Asokan was being appointed Secretary of Kanyakumari East while D Johnthangam will handle the West Unit, they said in a statement and urged the local functionaries to extend their cooperation to the new office-bearers.

A District Secretary plays a key role in the organisational setup of a Dravidian party in Tamil Nadu.

Incidentally, AIADMK has no representation in the current Assembly from all the six Assembly constituencies coming under Kanyakumari. All of them are either represented by Opposition DMK or Congress.

Further, the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha segment is also represented by the lone BJP MP in Tamil Nadu, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan.    PTI

Chennai, Jul 21: The DMK has lashed out at arch-rival AIADMK for not voting in favour of the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government, alleging the ruling party in Tamil Nadu supported the NDA as a "quid pro quo" despite several issues.

DMK Working President MK Stalin, whose party has no members in the Lok Sabha, had urged the AIADMK to support the no-confidence motion as it has 37 MPs in the Lok Sabha, making it the third-largest party after the ruling BJP and opposition Congress.

"Support for Modi Govt in #NoConfidence despite NEET, 15th Finance Commission, GST, Hindi imposition and communal politics is further proof of the quid pro quo arrangement between ADMK and BJP," Stalin said in a tweet late last night.

The no-confidence motion, moved by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a former BJP ally, against the Modi government was decisively defeated last night.

The government won the motion by 325 against 126 votes.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami had indicated on Thursday that his party might not support the motion as it was moved by the TDP for an issue concerning Andhra Pradesh.

"No party had backed Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery issue when AIADMK lawmakers had stalled Lok Sabha for nearly three weeks seeking the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee," Palaniswami had said.

Several AIADMK members opposed the no-confidence motion that came as a boost to the NDA.

The no-trust motion was the first after Modi assumed office in May 2014 and less than a year before the next general elections.

Chennai, July 14: The room at Apollo hospitals where late AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa was hospitalised in December 2016 will be inspected on July 29 by the counsel representing the one man panel probing her death and those from the side of her aide V K Sasikala.

Allowing an application from two lawyers representing the panel, seeking to visit the hospital, Justice Arumughaswamy, heading the one man commission, allowed them and two advocates from Sasikala's side to inspect the room on July 29.

Besides the room, the Emergency and ICCU units, the floors where government officers, ministers and Sasikala accessed the hospital premises are among the spots that will be inspected, according to commission sources.

The inspection is aimed at understanding the circumstances and correlate it with evidence furnished to the commission.

The move assumes significance since a video clip showing Jayalalithaa from her hospital bed was leaked last December.

Such aspects are also expected to be verified during the counsel's visit proposed later this month.

The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry was constituted by the Tamil Nadu government last year following suspicions raised by several quarters on her death.

The panel's terms of reference were to inquire into the circumstances and situation leading to the hospitalisation of Jayalalithaa on September 22, 2016, and treatment provided till her death on December 5 the same year.

The commission had invited all those having "personal knowledge and direct acquaintance" in the matter to furnish information to it.

Puducherry, Jul 2: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, who also holds the Finance portfolio, today presented a Rs 7,530 crore budget, which imposes no fresh taxes, in the territorial Assembly, amidst protest and walk out by the opposition MLAs.

In his 75-minute long address, Narayanasamy said of Rs 7530 crores which is the projected outlay of the budget the Union Territory's own resources for the current fiscal is estimated at Rs 4570 crore while the Central assistance would be Rs 1476 crore.

He said the anticipated grants for the Centrally sponsored schemes was estimated at Rs 409 crore.

The remaining Rs 1,050 crore would be met from "open market borrowings and loans from the Central financial institutions."

A major portion of the financial resources of Puducherry goes to meeting the committed expenditure of salaries, pension, loan and interest payments and purchase of power, he noted.

While Rs 1,800 crore has been allocated for disbursement of salaries out of the budget estimate, Rs 875 crore is earmarked for payment of pension and Rs 1380 crore for debt servicing (repayment of loan and payment of interest) and Rs 1200 crore for purchase of power," he added.

The Chief Minister pointed out that during the previous financial year (2017-2108) the expenditure incurred was Rs 6757 crore marking 95 percent of the revenue target.

He recalled that after creating a separate public account of Puducherry with effect from December 2007, the Central government had dispensed with the grant of plan loans for the Union Territory.

The Puducherry government has been permitted to availof the loan through open market borrowings and from Central financial institutions like HUDCO and NABARD for funding plan schemes.

Within minutes of Chief Minister commencing his budget speech, the opposition legislators belonging to the AINRC and AIADMK registered their protest against the government and staged a walk out.

Earlier, they alleged that none of the promises held out by the government in the last budget werefulfilled.

The House adjourned after Chief Minister presented the budget to meet tomorrow at 9.30 AM.

New Delhi, Jun 25 :  The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on June 27 a plea filed by 18 disqualified AIADMK MLAs seeking transfer of their case from the Madras High Court to the apex court after the split verdict by the high court.
A vacation bench of justices Arun Mishra and S K Kaul said it will hear the plea day after tomorrow.

Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the 18 MLAs, said it is a serious matter which requires urgent hearing as the high court has given a split verdict on June 14 and the third judge is scheduled to hear the matter afresh.

He alleged that people knew through WhatsApp about the third judge who will be hearing the case after the split verdict.

The court said, "we don't go by WhatsApp messages and the matter will be heard on June 27".

The Madras High Court had on June 14 given a split verdict on petitions challenging the disqualification of 18 MLAs loyal to sidelined party leader T T V Dhinakaran, a ruling that maintained status quo in the corridors of power in Tamil Nadu.

A division bench of Madras High Court comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar delivered divergent verdicts on whether the 18 MLAs deserved to be disqualified under the anti-defection law by Speaker P Dhanapal on September 18 last year for approaching the Governor and seeking the removal of Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

The court ruled that the senior-most judge after the chief justice would now hand-pick a judge who will hear the matter afresh.

In her 200-page order, the chief justice had upheld the Speaker's decision, saying, "In my opinion, the view taken by the Speaker is a possible, if not plausible view, and I am unable to hold that the said decision is any way unreasonable, irrational or perverse."

Justice Sundar, in his 135-page order, struck a dissenting note, insisting that Dhanapal's order "deserved to be set aside on grounds of perversity, non-compliance with principles of natural justice, mala fides and violation of the constitutional mandate".

The chief justice said status quo would continue till the third judge delivered the verdict on the petitions.PTI
Chennai, Jun 21 : The ruling AIADMK and BJP today sought to make light of actor-politician Kamal Haasan's meeting with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi with a senior state minister sarcastially remarking his party will not be bothered even if he met US President Donald Trump.

BJP leader and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan said Haasan had met leaders of a party that had been "rejected by people".

AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said his party "being a powerful" organisation was not bothered about such meetings.

"As far as he (Haasan) is concerned, let him meet anyone, that is his right. Let him meet even Trump....there is no need for us to bother about such meetings since we are (a) powerful (party) and are with the people," Jayakumar, a vocal critic of Haasan, told reporters here.

He was replying to a question on Haasan's meeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi in Delhi yesterday and today respectively.

After meeting Sonia Gandhi, Haasan, who is the founder-president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), said he discussed with her the political situation in Tamil Nadu.

Radhakrishnan said: "He (Haasan) has flipped an old book...it is not a useful book, one that has been rejected by people and judged as not worthy," he told reporters at Nagercoil in his native Kanyakumari district. PTI

Tuticorin (TN), Jun 9: More than two weeks after 13 people were killed in police firing during anti-Sterlite protests here, two deputy tahsildars who allegedly gave the order to the force to open fire, have been transferred.
Deputy tahsildars Kannan and Sekar were transferred to Kayathaaru and Srivaikuntam respectively by District Collector Sandeep Nandoor, according to an official order.
Thirteen people were killed in the police firing on May 22 and 23 after protests for closure of the plant over pollution concerns turned violent in Tuticorin.
The Tamil Nadu government last month appointed a one-person commission of inquiry headed by a retired judge of the Madras High Court to probe the violence in Tuticorin.
The State Human Rights Commission also has initiated an inquiry into the matter.
On May 28, the government ordered the state pollution control board to seal and "permanently" close the Vedanta group's copper plant, following the violent protests.
The following day Chief Minister K Palaniswami maintained in the assembly that police action was "unavoidable" and said action would be taken if anyone had handled the situation wrongly.
The issue continued to rock the assembly during the following days with the ruling AIADMK claiming that the main opposition party DMK had allotted land for expansion of the copper plant in Tuticorin district when it was in power during 2006-11.
The chief minister has listed out efforts by his government for permanent closure of the unit, including the 2013 action taken by J Jayalalithaa as then chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
He had also accused DMK working president MK Stalin of allotting a 230-acre land for Sterlite expansion when he held the industries portfolio as deputy chief minister.
The State Human Rights Commission also has initiated an inquiry into the issue.

New Delhi, Apr 5: The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday yet again as the House could not take up the No Confidence Motion against the Narendra Modi government due to continuous uproarious scenes.
In the post noon session, when the House reassembled, AIADMK members trooped into the Well protesting over their demand for immediate setting up of Cauvery Water Management Board. The agitating members raised slogans "we want justice" and "we want Cauvery Board'.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan disallowed adjournment motions brought by some members and allowed laying of papers.
Amid ruckus, Leader of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said Congress and other Opposition parties are ready to discuss no-confidence motion and other issues. He urged the Speaker to take up the no-confidence motion in the House.
House Leader of the CPI-M P Karunakaran also urged the Speaker to take up the no-confidence motion.
Amid uproar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the Government is ready for debate on the no-confidence motion but Congress and other opposition parties are not serious for the debate. He said, ' the principal opposition Congress is continuing with its disruptions in the House.'
He said BJP-NDA MPs have decided to not take salary and allowances for 23 days as Parliament has not been functional.
Taking up the No Confidence Motion moved by the floor leaders of various parties including Congress, the Speaker told the agitating members that she had to do headcount of 50 members standing on their designated places to allow taking up of the motion.
"I am duty bound to allow the motion, but I cannot do the headcount in this situation and therefore I request all members to go back to their seats," she said.
The Speaker contended that she could not do the headcount amid unruly scenes in the House.
"Unless the House is in order, I will not be in a position to count the 50 members who have to stand in their assigned places so that I can ascertain as to whether the leave can be granted or not," she said.
'House is not in order, I will not able to bring notice, ' the Speaker said.
The agitating members continued to raise slogans and created a ruckus forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings of the House till Friday.
Earlier, the Question Hour was also a washout as the House had to be adjourned within a minute of meeting, till 1200 hrs over the uproar caused by AIADMK members over the Cauvery Water issue.
Both the Houses of Parliament have failed to transact any major business since the beginning of the second part of the Budget session of Parliament on March 5. UNI

New Delhi, Apr 4: For the 20th day in the second half of the budget session, the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed an uproar by the TDP, AIADMK and the Congress members on the issue of the special status for Andhra Pradesh, the Cauvery waters issue and the dilution of the SC/ST Act, forcing the adjournment of the house till 1400 hours.
Soon after the administration of oath of affirmation to 12 new and re-elected members, the TDP and the AIADMK members began protesting on the demand for special status for Andhra and failure of the Centre to set up the Cauvery Water Management Board.
Despite pleas by Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to members to allow the House to proceed and allow laying of papers, the members entered the well of the hosue, displaying placards and shouting slogans ‘we want justice’.
Soon after the members of the Congress party also entered the well of the house on the issue of the alleged dilution of the SC/ST Act.
Even as the Congress members shouted slogans like ‘Dalit virodhi ye sarkar nahi chalegi’ , minister of state for parliamentary affairs Vijay Goel said that it was the Congress that had been pursuing ‘anti-Dalit’ policies for 50 years.
‘’Let us have a discussion in the House on who is anti-Dalit,’’ he said.
Expressing concern on the disruptions in the House, Chairman Naidu said that a handful of people were not allowing the House to function.
"The whole country is watching with concern why the House is not functioning. A number of important Bills are pending. The government has said it is ready for discussion on all issues be it the Cauvery issue, the special status for Andhra or the bank scams. Please allow the Hosue to function. There are just two days left for the session ,’’ he appealed to the members.
When repeated pleas to members fell on deaf ears, he adjourned the House till 1400 hours.
This is the 20th day in succession in the second half of the budget session that the House has witnessed protests over various issues like the bank scams, the demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh and the Cauvery waters issue, leading to the washout of proceedings of the House without transacting much business. UNI
