Lucknow, Dec 15: President Ram Nath Kovind paid floral tributes to Buddhist monk Bhante Pragyanand,
who died at the age of on November 30 at King George’s Medical University
(KGMU) here after prolonged illness.
His body has been kept at Buddha Vihar in Risaldar Park where
he stayed since the time he came to India from Sri Lanka in 1942. Pragyanand
was among the seven bhiksus who gave ‘dhamma deeksha’ to Dr B R Ambedkar on
October 14, 1956 in Nagpur. Ambedkar visited him twice at Buddha Vihar in
Lucknow.
On arrival at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, President Kovind was received by UP Governor Ram Naik and chief minister Yogi Adityanath. From the airport, he went straight to Buddha Vihar to pay homage to Pragyanand. After a brief stay at Buddha Vihar the President proceeded to Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University to be the chief guest at the convocation ceremony.
The funeral procession of Pragyanand will begin on Saturday from Risaldar Park and culminate at the Ambedkar statue in the heart of the city, Hazratganj, from where his followers will proceed to Shravasti to cremate the mortal remains on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Mahabodhi Society of India has urged the Uttar Pradesh government to allocate land for a memorial dedicated to Bhante Pragyanand.
Pragyanand's disciple Pragyasar said, “Bhante Pragyanand had done a lot for propagating Buddhism in India, besides working for education. He is a role model to many and a memorial dedicated to him will inspire future generations. We have urged the state government to allocate land for a stupa in his memory.” UNI
