Srinagar, Dec 5: Rich tributes were paid to former chief minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on
his 112th birth anniversary here on Tuesday.
Large number of leaders and former minister of National
Conference (NC) also paid floral tributes and offered Fateha to Sheikh at his
grave yard at Naseem Bagh on the bank of Dal Lake.
NC president Farooq Abdullah and NC Additional General Secretary Dr Mustafa Kamal, sons of the late leader, were among the first who offered floral tributes and joined Fateha Khawani.
Meanwhile, Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also paid rich tributes to Sheikh Abdullah and recalled his significant contribution in the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
In his message, the Governor observed that Sheikh Abdullah was a popular leader and a social reformer, who fought for the rights of oppressed sections of society, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, and strived for the sustenance of secular and pluralistic values.
'A sustained endeavour towards strengthening of our democratic institutions and maintenance of communal harmony and brotherhood would be a befitting tribute to Sheikh Abdullah,' he added.
Meanwhile, in her message, the Chief Minister described late Sheikh Abdullah as a visionary leader, who would always be remembered for taking many revolutionary steps, including the introduction of land reforms and Single Line Administration in the state.
Ms Mehbooba also prayed for eternal solace to the late leader. UNI
