Srinagar, Dec 19: A 24-year-old woman was killed while about two dozen other civilians were injured, when security forces allegedly opened fire and pellets and burst teargas shells to disperse protestors in Shopian district, where two militants were killed in an encounter on Tuesday.
However, police said the woman was killed in cross-fire during the encounter between the militants and security forces near the encounter site.
The trouble started immediately after news spread that two militants, including a foreigner, were killed in an encounter at Batmuran in Shopian early this morning. Hundreds of people from Batmuran and nearby villages hit the streets and tried to move towards encounter site to disrupt operation.
However, security forces deployed in these areas immediately prevented the demonstrators to move towards the encounter site.
Official sources said as the demonstrators refused to disperse, security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge which had no impact. Later security forces opened fire and fired pellets in which over two dozen people were injured. They were rushed to a local hospital, where a woman identified as Rubi Jan, who had received a bullet in the abdomen, died.
“About ten injured people have received pellet injuries to their eyes,” they added. UNI
