New Delhi, Jan 21: A galaxy of 112 ‘First Ladies’ who were first to set a milestone in their
respective fields like the first Merchant Navy captain, first woman
train driver of a passenger train, first female fire fighter and bus driver as also the first Indian eve to reach
Antarctica among others were felicitated by Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi here on
Saturday.
'Your achievement will inspire other women to break the glass
ceiling and do the women of India proud,' she said welcoming the First Ladies at a function here. Ms
Gandhi said they were a unique group of women who were the first in their respective fields of achievement
and each one deserved to be recognised.
Among the women achievers were Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to scale the Mount Everest summit, Priya Jhingan, the first lady cadet to join Indian Army, P V Sindhu, the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal; India's first woman paralympian medallist Deepa Malik and Ayesha Aziz, the country's youngest
pilot and Kashmir's first woman pilot.
Also present were Radhika Menon, the country's first female Merchant Navy Captain; Karnam Malleswari India's first weightlifter to win an Olympic medal; Surekha Yadav, the first Indian woman train driver of a passenger train; Heena Sidhu, the first woman to win a gold in World Cup shooting; Sunil Dabas, the first woman kabaddi coach to win a Dronacharya; Bhagyashree Thipsay, the first Indian eve to win an International
chess Grand Master; Flying Officers Bhawana Kanth, Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh who were the IAF’s first batch of female fighter pilots apart from Chhavi Rajawat, India’s first woman sarpanch, Alisha Abdullah, the nation's first F1 women racer and first female national racing champion and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, the Indian business woman who was the first to reach 1 billion dollar net worth of Biocon.
Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal congratulated the First Ladies and hoped that their number would grow bigger and bigger. She said women in India face a number of challenges, and achieving the distinction of being a first in any field would have been truly challenging for most women.
"You have shown and proved that it can be done and it will happen," Ms Harsimrat Kaur told them. UNI
