Agartala, Jan 20: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has initiated a move to forge
alliance with tribal based Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT),
Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) Tripraha faction, National Council
of Tripura (NCT) and Trinamool Congress to defeat both left front and BJP in
the upcoming assembly poll.
Congress Legislative Party leader Gopal Roy told media here
today that there were several rounds of talks among the partners and after
finalization of IPFT–BJP poll adjustment yesterday, five parties’ alliance led
by Congress got momentum and the seat sharing will be resolved soon.
All the parties would field their candidates in both reserved and unreserved seats mutually but INPT will field more in hills while Congress representation in unreserved areas would be maximum, Roy said adding that IPFT has been openly demanding to divide the state on ethnic line and BJP has joined hands with them.
“The Congress has a traditional vote bank in Tripura, which want development and peace. The BJP grew in past two years only because of divide and rule policy of CPI-M and they appeared to be the main opposition. But after forging alliance with IPFT, both tribal and non-tribals have turned eyes away from them. It is clear that BJP is trying to capture power by any means,” Roy said.
He claimed that the Congress-led alliance has a big chance to come in power this time because of strategic failure of BJP and CPI-M. The parties will strike alliance with the approval of Congress high command and all the parties would field clean, fresh and impressive candidates this time to fight against CPI-M and BJP.
However, INPT and NCT leaders have admitted the discussion on prospective alliance and said, “We had intention to go with BJP as promising national party and also had several rounds of talks but with the entry of IPFT N C Debbarma faction, the situation has changed now. Anyway, we are not leaving the field and allowing IPFT–BJP to play safe game.”
They also indicated that the tribal parties would challenge IPFT in the hills and believed that a few leaders were solely responsible for forming the grand alliance of all the regional parties under BJP against ruling left front.
They also regretted that BJP had overestimated the strength of IPFT and let down the INPT-NCT. The peace loving and mature tribal people are still with INPT and NCT and without them defeating the left front in the election will remain a dream; BJP will realize their mistake only after March 3 when the ballots will be counted, they added.
Meanwhile, BJP state president Biplab Kumar Deb indicated that his party is in close touch with all the regional parties. The Congress doesn’t have any hope in Tripura anymore; so forging alliance with them is nothing but ruining their own prospect in future.
“BJP never denied INPT, NCT and IPFT (Tripraha) but question of electoral alliance is always based on win-ability factor and scope of accommodation in electoral framework. If somebody feels they are ignored it is unfortunate. All the anti-left parties, including Congress, have to think to oust it from power at any cost and BJP is the only party today,” Deb added. UNI
