RAJOURI, JANUARY 16- To
mainstream electoral literacy through educational institutions and other
organizations, District Election Authorities today discussed the modalities for
setting up of Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) in educational institutions and
communities not covered under formal education system.
Being set up under the supervision and guidance of Dr.
Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, District Election Officer, ELCs will also engage future
and new voters through extracurricular interventions.
In this regard, the maiden meeting of District Electoral
Literacy Club (DELC) was convened here by Shrikant Susé, Deputy District Election Officer
which was attended by Dr. Abdul Khabir, Nodal Officer Training Management,
Waqar Talib, Nodal Officer SVEEP, Ch Lal Hussain, CEO besides Principals of
Government Degree Colleges and Principal DIET.
The head of educational institutions across the district
will constitute ELCs with students as members and would be run by an executive
committee from among the students with elected representatives from each of the
classes. One or two teachers from Humanities will act as Nodal officers and
Mentors for the ELC while campus ambassador will act as its convener.
Dy DEO informed that the clubs are being created to spread
voter awareness and to enable voters to exercise the right to vote effectively.
He said such interactions will increase awareness about electoral reforms and
ELCs will organise such programmes on regular basis which will apprise students
of electoral processes, who would further spread awareness among other people
about voting.
Waqar Talib, Nodal Officer SVEEP briefed about the
functions, objectives and nomenclature of the electoral literacy clubs to be
opened at different levels in the district.

Pertinently, ELCs will be constituted in secondary and senior secondary schools
for future voters whereas similar clubs will be formed in BGSBU and colleges
for engaging students in hands-on experience in electoral literacy. Chunav
Paathshala will also be constituted at polling station level to cater to those
outside formal education structures.
