Nainital, Feb 4: Fifty-year-old Dhondi Ram from Maharashtra, who has just concluded his Uttarakhand leg of Cycle Yatra, is all set to proceed further to complete the Bharat Yatra and set a Guinness Book of World Record.
In Uttarakhand, he spent his three-month-long time to traverse the rural areas of the hills. For this, Dhondi Ram got letters of appreciation from several eminent people of state, including Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Finance Minister Paraklash Pant.
Dhondi Ram, a villager from the Jawale village of Sholapur district in Maharashtra, started his cycle journey from Shrinagar in February 2017 and now wants to go up to the southern end -- Kanyakumari. He considers anti-corruption crusader Aanna Hazare as his ideal and feels proud in saying that his village is only 70km away from Anna Hazare’s village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahemad Nagar district.
Dhondi Ram wants to complete rest of the Yatra in another three years.
When asked about the formalities necessary for setting the world record, Dhondi Ram said that he was maintaining a diary and was recording the names of the places he was visiting.
"At the onset of my journey, the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Nirmal Singh, was present at Shrinagar and all the magistrates of various districts there issued certificates to me regarding the cycle journey," he said.
He showed his certificates from village heads to the cabinet ministers about his cycle voyage to.
Dhondi is quite confident that these documents were more than enough to authenticate his claim for the Guinness Book of World Records of the longest journey on a cycle without breaks.
Prior to claim for the world record, he is also planning to claim for the Limca Book of Records for longest cycle journey in India. To complete the formalities he has already visited the Limca Book of Record’s office in Gurgaon, NCR and got green signal from them. He told UNI.
Dhondi Ram has cycled 87 districts of five states and one Union Territory so far -- Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Hariyana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh.
After Uttarakhand, he has embarked on his journey to Uttar Pradesh, and then to Delhi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat has written in his letter of appreciation that he appreciated the endeavour of Dhndi Ram. “I appreciate the endeavour of Shri Dhondi Ram and wish him all the success to complete his journey."
The modus operandi is very simple. On entering a city or a district, Dhondi Ram first meets the city mayor or the district magistrate and requests them to arrange his smooth stay in the district. Getting a letter of support from DM makes his journey very easy. He gets food and shelter.
"Apart from the aim of setting the world record, safe driving and respect to the women are other mottos of my cycle journey," he told.
A Law Graduate from Pune University, Dhondi Ram started his journey with only three thousand rupees in his pocket.
He uses an old cycle without breaks in place. He says, it is very difficult to drive cycle without breaks, especially in the hill areas like Uttarakhand, but at the same time, it needs more focus and concentration, consequently, he gives a message of careful driving.
Dhondi Ram is a bachelor and belongs to a nomadic tribe, Dhangar, in Maharashtra.
"I am campaigning for the peace and harmony in the country," he told. UNI
