Feb 28: Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Textiles Smriti
Zubin Irani today said Jute diversification technologies are effective in
diverse socio-economic conditions since it could be utilized to generate
employment and enhance market potential of jute-based product.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 27th Technological Conference on the
topic of “Shaping the Future of Jute” organized by the Indian Jute Industries’
Research Association (IJIRA) at its premises here, Ms Irani said Jute is the
second most important fiber after cotton and a suitable material for
eco-friendly alternative to plastics and polythene.
The Minister endorsed the views expressed by the Chairman and Director of IJIRA that jute is not a dying industry and diversification is the way forward. She also mentioned that the Ministry has already taken initiatives in rejuvenating jute with special focus on the North-East.
Underlining the importance of technology in jute industry, the Minister said that technology must be incorporated for the manufacture of jute diversified products. Commercialization of these technologies would result in establishment of individual and group ventures for manufacturing jute diversified products and increased jute consumption and rural employment, she added.
Congratulating the IJIRA for developing low cost jute based sanitary napkins, Ms Irani urged to take it forward as hygiene is fundamental to the health and well being of women and girls. She also acknowledged the roles played by the Self-help groups (SHG) in alleviating poverty in rural areas and providing employment to the women.
