Islamabad, Feb 5: The Interior Ministry of Pakistan has asked the Gilgit-Baltistan’s home
department to make foolproof security arrangements to avoid an Indian attack
on installations of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to sabotage the mega
project, reports the Dawn newspaper.
A Gilgit datelined report quoted an official of the home
department as saying that the department had received a letter from the federal
interior ministry recently in which it had warned of possible terrorist attacks
on the CPEC route.
The official on condition of anonymity said on Saturday that the letter No 221/Is2018 of January 28 claimed that India had sent 400 Muslim youngsters to Afghanistan to receive training to be able to carry out attacks on the CEPC installations, including bridges at Karakoram Highway and other important points on the CPEC route.
After receiving the interior ministry’s directives, the Gilgit-Baltistan government has enhanced security on the CPEC route, including two dozen bridges built on the Karakoram Highway from Khunjerab Pass to Diamer district, the report said.
Gilgit-Baltistan Home Secretary Jawad Akram, Inspector General of Police Sabir Ahmed along with other police and intelligence officials visited Diamer district on Saturday to review security arrangements for bridges on the highway.
In January last year, the Gilgit-Baltistan police had claimed to have foiled a plan allegedly sponsored by Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing to sabotage projects related to CPEC and generate anti-Pakistan feelings in Gilgit-Baltistan.
India says the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, which includes the regions of Gilgit and Baltistan, is an integral part of the country and that Pakistan has been in illegal occupation of the territory.
In a 1963 border agreement, Pakistan illegally ceded the Shaksgam Valley, around 5,180 sq km, to China. Since then China has constructed the Karakoram Highway linking Kashghar in Xinjiang with Gilgit and Abbottabad through the Khunjerab Pass and made it an axis of the Belt and Road Initiative which links Xinjiang to Gwadar port in Balochistan.
