New Delhi, Mar 9: The Centre on Friday convened an official level meeting of Cauvery river
riparian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Puducherry and Kerala on formation of
a Cauvery Management Board for overseeing the sharing of Cauvery waters as per
the quantum awarded to each state.
The move came after the matter was persistently raised by
Tamil Nadu members in Parliament. The Tamil Nadu MPs have disrupted
proceedings, raised placards and entered the Well in both Houses for formation
of a Cauvery Water Management Board.
The meeting, chaired by Union Water Resources Secretary U P Singh, was attended by chief secretaries and principal secretaries of the states concerned.
``This was a meeting for consultation with the states on what their understanding was on the structure and functions of the proposed Board,’’ a senior official present in the meeting told.
The states gave their views and have been asked to send in their proposals in writing, the sources said.
The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, in its final award, had enjoined upon the Centre to evolve a suitable mechanism by setting up a Cauvery Management Board for implementation of the award.
The Board would, in turn, constitute a Cauvery Water Regulation Committee for assistance.
The matter had been hanging fire as the CWDT award was challenged in the Supreme Court. UNI
