Mumbai, Mar 20: Maharshtra government will amend the Information Technology Act to regulate the
scourge of illegal online betting and debit card, credit card frauds in the
state, this was stated by the Minister of State for Home (Urban), Dr Ranjit Patil,
in the legislative council.
Replying to supplementary queries raised on a
calling attention motion moved by leader of opposition, Dhananjay Munde and
others, the Minister of State for Home (Urban) argued that not all online
betting or lotteries are illegal.
He added that based on the report of Centres Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), the government will take action in blocking the website of Game King India that runs online betting, and will also be taking action against its directors.
Raising the motion, Munde argued that the Game King India has been running online betting without seeking official permissions. He added that the company that has more than 500 branches in Mumbai, Maharashtra and in other states of the country, has been holding draws by the minute. Replying to the debate, Patil stated that since 2014, there have been 17 cases lodged against the company over its online betting. He further argued that since the matter is related to cyber security and since the state does not have its own mechanism as yet to detect online fraud, it has to refer the same to Centres CERT for probe to link its online betting and the company.
The leader of opposition slammed the state home department, arguing that the Indore police from Madhya Pradesh had come to Mumbai and to arrest the company's directors, they wanted to know what the Mumbai and Maharashtra police were doing.
Patil informed that even the Indore police had taken more than one-and-half years after lodging the First Information Report (FIR).
The Minister stated that after the CERT report, the government will block the website. He added that taking note of the delay it takes to get a report from Centres CERT, the state has created its own MH-CERT, creating 136 posts to tackle such online frauds. UNI
