New Delhi, Mar 6: Eyeing prospects of electoral gains in the Andhra Pradesh, the Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday stated that the UPA will give special category status to the state, if it comes to power in 2019.
Addressing a protest march organised by the Congress leaders from Andhra Pradesh, Mr Gandhi said giving Andra Pradesh special category status will be the first step Congress led UPA government takes when it comes to power in 2019.
“The first thing we will do when we come to power in 2019 is give the state special category Status”, he said.
He urged the agitators to put up a united fight to convince the Union government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the special status should be given.
“Confident that if we stand together we will convince the Government of India and the Prime Minister that what is due to people of state should be given”, Mr Gandhi said.
The ruling TDP, an ally of BJP led NDA, and YSR Congress are protesting inside and outside Parliament since the first part of the Budget session.
The MPs of both parties are protesting in the second part of session which began on Monday. Earlier in the day Congress MPs led by Mr Gandhi also protested outside the Parliament.
While Mr Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had extended their support to the TDP MPs protest, political observers say that the Congress decision to hit the street would be in the larger interest that the party has in Andhra Pradesh.
However, Pallam Raju, former Union Minister and senior leader from the southern state, told UNI that the Congress was fighting for the implementation of special category status for Andhra Pradesh for last four years.
“Only recently sensing the public mood, both the TDP and YSR Congress party have woken up and they have started standing in the parliament with placards. But we have been doing this struggle for four years”.
He also said Mr Gandhi was reiterating his stand on special category status for Andhra Pradesh.
“Rahul Gandhi was in Andhra Pradesh few months ago. In a public meeting held in Guntur, he and all the coalition partners announced their unilateral support for the special category status”, added Mr Raju. UNI
