Agartala, Mar 15: Senior BJP leader and deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma trounced the CPI
(M) to emerge as the run-away winner in the adjourned election to Charilam (ST)
constituency held on March 12 by highest margin of 25,547 votes.
The CPI (M) has withdrawn their candidate Palash Debbarma
because of alleged terror. The election to the Charilam (ST) constituency could
not be held on February 18 along with the rest of the state as polls there had
to be countermanded following the death of CPI (M) candidate and sitting MLA
Ramendra Narayan Debbarma.
The BJP candidate and deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma secured 26,580 votes in the total voters of 29,754 while the CPI (M) candidate got only 1030 votes. The Congress secured 775 votes, followed by INPT at 685 votes and Jyoti Lal Debbarma, an independent, got only 198 votes.
The NOTA registered 485 votes.
The BJP victory in Charilam raises the party’s tally in the state assembly to 36 and combined with IPFT’s eight the two-party coalition have a decisive 44 seats –more than two third majority-in the 60-member state assembly. UNI
