New Delhi, Mar 15: Indian Foreign Ministry on Thursday said there was no need to make a issue of
Pakistani envoy Sohail Mahmood being called by the government there and
asserted such summoning are "pretty normal" in diplomatic world.
"Let us be clear on why he has gone back (to Islamabad).
He has been called for consultation. It is pretty normal an ambassador or a
High Commissioner in any country to be called. This is routine also in
nature," MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar told reporters here at the regular
weekly briefing.
However, he said Indian High Commissioner in Pakistan is "facing a litany of issues which have not been resolved for several months".
"We raised these issues in good faith through diplomatic channels and not through the media and we have asked for immediate resolution of these issues faced by our High Commission in Islamabad so that safety and security of the diplomatic mission and our diplomatic and consular offices is assured," he said.
The MEA spokesman said India was keen to ensure that Indian mission in Pakistan was able to discharge its duties normally "without any obstruction or harassment in keeping with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961.
He also said India has "repeatedly taken up" with Pakistan both in Delhi and Islamabad.
'We expect Pakistan will take note of all points and resolve the issue,' he said.
In fact, Muhammad Faisal, spokesman to Pakistani Foreign Ministry has also said that the envoy to India Sohail Mahmood would be visiting Islamabad "for consultations on matters relating to Pakistan-India relations".
The remarks from Indian MEA spokesman comes as there have been reports in media lately over embarrassment being faced by diplomats from both India and Pakistan in the respective countries.
Mr Kumar, however, said, he had no comments to offer on why the Pakistani High Commissioner has been called back.
To a question on whether Indian ambassador to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria would also be called to New Delhi, the MEA spokesman said: "...as and when it is required, he comes".
"At any point of time, as and when necessary our ambassadors and High Commissioners do come to India for consultation....so it is not linked to any body being called or not," Mr Kumar said.
On complaints from Pakistani side about alleged harassment of the diplomats in India, he said, "We have seen the issues which have been raised by Pakistan. We do not wish to response to these issues through the media".
These are raised and taken through "established diplomatic channels", he said adding, "at this stage I can share with you is that we are looking into the issues raised by Pakistan".
To a question on Pakistani officials releasing some videos of alleged harassment of their officials in India, the MEA spokesman specifically said 'we do not want to go to the media on specific issues'. UNI
