Kuala Lumpur, Apr 6: Malysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on Friday announced the
dissolution of Parliament, seeking a strong mandate for the ruling coalition in
the general election expected early May.
“The king has permitted for parliament to be dissolved effective Saturday, April 7,” Najib said in a special address on the state television.
Polling has to be held within 60 days from the dissolution of parliament.
He said the Barisan Nasional coalition headed by his United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) party needed a strong new mandate to allow it to proceed with a more extensive transformation of the country.
"If the people choose and give the BN government the mandate to govern for the next five years, InsyaAllah (God willing), we in the top leadership pledge to fulfill more effectively and strive in our obligations to elevate the nation to become one of the 20 most outstanding countries in the world," he said.
"For the sake of our beloved people and country, let's continue our journey towards greater transformation with BN," he said.
The election is said to be a referendum on the prime minister, who is running for a third term amid a scandal involving billions of dollars that were diverted from a Malaysian state investment fund.
Najib urged the people to assess the BN government on the basis of its stability and vast experience as well track record of excellence which had been acknowledged internationally. UNI
