Chennai, Apr 18: All that glitters are gold on Wednesday as the day marked the auspicious Akshaya Tritiya.
All the jewellery showrooms in the city were awash with teeming customers as they did brisk business, despite the prices of yellow metal going up by Rs 1,000 per gram during the last one month.
The fact that the value of ten gm gold was below Rs 30,000 augurs well for the jewellery shop owners, who expect good sales, especially with the commencement of the wedding season.
Several jewellery outlets have been attracting customers with good packages and new wedding collections to improve their sales. 
While there seemed to be somewhat dip in sales last year due to the effects of demonetisation, all jewellery shops were in buoyant mood this year as the sales today was expected to increase by at least 15-20 per cent, when compared to last year.
Wealth can be gained on this day because, on this day, Lord Krishna gave the Akshaya Patra to Draupadi as well as to his friend Sudama. So the day was also associate with increases in wealth and buying gold means that it brings prosperity and more wealth in the future.
The word "Akshay" means never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day was believed to bring good luck and success. 
It is believed that if one does charity on this day they would be blessed. 
On Akshay Tritiya, Mrutika is worshipped. The day was considered very auspicious for starting new ventures as any venture initiated on this auspicious day was assumed to grow and bring prosperity. 
Hence, new ventures like starting a business, construction, and investment in gold was done/performed on Akshay Tritiya.
As scores of people thronged the leading jewellery chains across the State, the jewellers, rising up to occasion, have come out with attractive discounts and special offers to attract buyers on the occasion. 
What more some jewellery outlets have even allowed advance booking of jewels with a token payment that would ensure that gold would be sold at the same rate on the day it was booked.
This was done as people expected the rate of the yellow metal to go up on Akshaya Tritiya.
