New Delhi, Apr 5: The Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day on Thursday after repeated adjournment
and pleas by Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien to allow division on the
anti-corruuption Bill failed to sway protesting Opposition MPs.
The chair briefly adjourned the House for 15 minutes till
1425 hrs in the post-lunch session but there was no let-up in the situation
before being finally adjourned till Friday, when the Budget session concludes.
Despite Vice Chairman P J Kurien's attempt to take up division as sought by AITC MPs Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Derek O'Brien, Opposition members from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu entered the Well of the House raising slogans of 'we want justice' and 'We want Cauvery' and holding placards. They were joined by several AITC, Congress and BSP MPs at the head of the Well.
Appealing for order, the chair said that yesterday the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill was moved in the House and since the two AITC MPs had demanded divsion, the House needed to be in order for taking it up.
However as protests continued unabated, the chair said their 'behaviour was unbecoming of Parliamentarians' and to take up division, order needed to be restored. At this, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel said the Government was ready for any discussion on any issue and demanded that the Opposition allow passage of important legislation including the Whistleblowers Bill and Motor Accidents Bill.
