Agartala, Apr 6: Condemning UGC circular over reservation, Association for Reserved Categories (SC/ST/OBC) of the Tripura University Association has launched a weeklong Relay Hunger strike in the campus against the circular to implement reservation taking department as a unit replacing the earlier method of treating the University as a unit.
About 500 faculty members, research scholars and students participated yesterday in the Protest March across the country.
The protest will be continued till April 14 next closing hour. The present method of granting reserved seats for SC/ST/OBC in faculty positions treats the university itself as a unit to maintain the roster. Shifting the roster to the department and limiting it to the respective cadre as the order proposes.
The new system will diminish the number of reserved seats significantly and the chance of candidates from these categories to occupy these positions will be prolonged, the protestors here alleged and added for the same reason UGC’s 2006 guidelines for Strict Implementation of Reservation Policy of the Government in University, Deemed to be University, Colleges and Other Grant-in- Aid Institutions and Centres has strictly forbidden the practice of creating department- wise cadres.
The practice of creating department-wise cadres, which tends to create single posts or cadres with artificially reduced number of the posts in order to avoid reservation, is strictly forbidden, which means that the UGC’s new proposed method of implementing reservation is contradictory to its own guideline. UNI
