Chennai, Apr 7: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy on Saturday announced a cash
award of Rs 50 lakh to weightlifter Sathish Kumar Sivalingam for winning the
gold in the men's 77-kg category in the ongoing Commonwealth Games at Gold
Coast, Australia.
In his congratulatory message, the Chief Minister said 'You
have done both the Nation and the State of Tamil Nadu proud by winning a Gold
at the 21st CWG Games. What is even more remarkable is that you have won a second Gold in successive Commonwealth Games',.
He said the financial reward for sportspersons winning a Commonwealth Gold Medal was enhanced to Rs 50 lakhs by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the weightlifter was eligible for this award.
Mr Palaniswami also said the state government has set up a Centre of Excellence for Weightlifting at Sathuvachari in Vellore to promote world class weightlifters.
''I once again congratulate you and all those who have contributed to your success and wish you many more such laurels on behalf the country and Tamil Nadu in future”, he added.
Meanwhile, the Southern Railway, where he was employed as Chief Office Superintendent in Dy CE office, Track Machines, Royapuram, congratulated Sathish Kumar for winning the gold , adding to his first gold in the Glasgow edition four years back.
Southern Railway General Manager R K Kulshrestha greeted him for once again bringing laurels to the country and to Indian Railways.
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in his home town of Vellore after watching his gold winning efforts in TN today morning.
Crackers were burst and sweets were distributed in the area.
His family was very much happy about his gold winning fete.
Stating that he was in good form in 2014, Sathish mother S Deivanai said he suffered a leg injury prior to this edition and could not practice.
But he recovered well in time, practised hard and made India and Tamil Nadu proud by winning his second successive gold in Commonwealth games, she added.
She said, except once, he never came home without a medal.
Sathish’s father N.Sivalingam said he spoke to them over phone. He said he would face tough fight from England and Australian lifters.
