New Delhi/Rajamundry, May 16: The Indian Naval Diving teams from Vishakapatnam-based Eastern Naval Command (ENC) were airlifted late on Tuesday night to Rajamundry for searching the people who went missing after a boat capsized in the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh's Devipatnam village.
The boat was carrying 40 people. While 23 people are reportedly missing, some managed to swim to safety and a few were rescued, sources said.
“Diving teams of ENC were airlifted from Vizag to Rajamundry by naval Dornier aircraft at about 2300 hrs on Tuesday for the rescue operations at Vodapalli, close to Polavaram where a boat was reported to have capsized,” an Indian Navy Spokesperson said.
Three naval helicopters with additional diving teams and a Dornier aircraft with technical and air traffic control crew also got airborne with first light this morning to augment the rescue operations and also the air traffic control services at Rajamundry airport, the spokesperson said.
The NDRF and SDRF are also present there and carrying out search and rescue operations. UNI
