Gadag, Karnataka, May 5 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today assured to find an amicable solution through negotiations to the vexed Mahadayi river water sharing issue aimed at providing drinking water to three parched Districts of North Karnataka.
"BJP is committed to find a solution to the Mayadayi issue through discussion and it will be done soon," he added.
Addressing a public meeting here, Mr Modi alleged that the ruling Congress has been misleading the people on the Mahadayi issue without revealing the truth that former AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi had announced that Mahadayi river water will not be shared with Karnataka.
"It was Ms Gandhi during 2007 Assembly election in Madgaon rpt Madgaon in Goa had announced that her party is committed to see that Goa will not let water to Karnataka from river Mahadayi and the issue was allowed to linger on though Congress was in power at the Centre in Karnataka and Goa too" he added.
Mr Modi had shown stoic silence on the issue so far and had for the first time referred the Mahadayi issue though his party BJP was under severe attack by agitating farmers and criticised by people belonging to all section of the society in the State. The ruling Congress had alleged that Prime Minister is not yielding to appeal for intervening on the issue and ask his government at Goa and Maharashtra to discuss the issue for settlement outside the court as per Tribunal's direction.
Farmers of Naragund and Navalgund are on agitation since last one year demanding construction of Kalasa-Banduri Nala to divert 7 tmc ft of water from river Mahadayi to provide drinking water to parched three districts which are facing severe drinking water shortage.
At one time the farmers had even staged dharna in fron of BJP's state headquarters at Jagganath Bhavan in Bengaluru alleging that BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa, who had promised to solve the issue within one month, had failed to keep up his word following which Goa Chief Minister Padnivas had written to him (Mr Yeddyurappa) about his willingness for discussion on the issue. But the discussion is yet to take place since the Goa Chief Minister refused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's invitation for talks on the issue.
