Srinagar, May 21: Curfew-like restrictions continued for the third day on Monday as a precautionary measure in the downtown and parts of civil lines and old city in Srinagar, where separatists have called for “ Eidgah Chalo” and general strike on the death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
All gates of historic Jamia Masjid in the down town remained closed and a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed to prevent any assembly of people in the worship place.
Police said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC remained imposed in the areas falling under five stations of M R Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Nowhatta in the downtown. Besides, restrictions have also been imposed in some areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station Karalkhud in the old city and Maisuma in the civil lines, police added and said it was a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order problem.
The Joint Resistance Leadership, comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik, has called for a general strike in the valley and 'Eidgah Challo' today to pay tributes to Mirwaiz Farooq and Lone.
Mirwaiz Farooq, father of moderate Hurriyat Conference(HC) chairman Mirwaiz Omar was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on May 21, 1990 in his Nigeen house. Later, more than 60 people were killed when security forces allegedly opened fire on funeral procession of Mirwaiz Farooq near Islamia College.
On this day in 2002, gunmen also murdered another separatist leader Abdul Gani Lone founder of Peoples Conference (PC) when he was leaving Eidgah after paying tributes to the Mirwaiz. Abdul Gani Lone is the father of Sajjad Gani Lone, minister in the coalition government from BJP quota and Bilal Gani Lone senior HC leader.
Though police said only restrictions have been imposed, the situation on the ground was entirely different as security forces and state police personnel deployed in large numbers have closed all roads with barbed wire, directing people to remain indoor.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid were closed with barbed wire at several places, including Rangar stop, Hawal and Gojwara and by parking bulletproof vehicles in the middle. Security forces and police could also be seen deployed in the Jamia market, one of the main business hub in the downtown. UNI
