Mumbai, Sep 7: A minor fire broke out at a pub near the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai Friday morning, a civic official said.

The incident took place at Tamasha pub located on the ground floor of a building near the Kamala Mills compound around 11.30 am, a senior official of the Disaster Management Cell of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

The blaze, which was triggered by short-circuit, was extinguished within minutes, the official said.

"The fire was doused even before the fire brigade team arrived," he said.

The incident brought back bitter memories of the devastating blaze at the Mojo's Bistro and 1 Above pub at Kamala Mills which killed 14 persons and injured several others on December 29 last year.

Mumbai, Jun 23 : With the plastic ban coming into force from today, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has organised a three-day exhibition at National Sports Club of India (NSCI) at Worli here to showcase eco-friendly alternatives to plastic items.

At the exhibition, which started yesterday, 61 stalls have been set up which showcase alternatives to plastic, like cloth and paper bags, straw, brush, packaging items made up of biodegradable material.

State Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam, BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, star couple Ajay Devgn and Kajol, Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray were present at the inauguration ceremony.

"We are happy to note that we have become the 18th state in the country to ban plastic, and we have done this despite facing pressures from the manufacturers," Kadam said on the occasion.

Devgn and Kajol supported the move and said they would appeal to the people to avoid the use of plastic.

"The decision to ban plastic is better late than never. Let us give our children a better future, one which is free from plastic," Devgn said.PTI

Mumbai, Jun 7: With the IMD predicting "heavy to very heavy" rainfall along the Maharashtra coast, including Mumbai, over this weekend, the Mumbai civic body is preparing itself to prevent and tackle monsoon-related disasters.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has taken a number of precautionary measures to tackle any eventuality in view of extremely heavy rainfall warning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) from June 9 to 11, a statement issued by the civic body said.
"Leaves of all the senior officials, including Deputy Municipal commissioners (DMCs), Assistant Commissioners (AMCs) and heads of departments have been cancelled and they have been directed to be available in their headquarters on June 9 and 10 (Saturday and Sunday)," it said.
On the steps being taken, the BMC said three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be stationed at Parel, Mankhurd (for eastern suburbs) and Andheri Sports Complex (for western suburbs). They are equipped with walkie-talkies and flood rescue material.
Besides, Navy personnel will be deployed in Colaba, Worli, Ghatkopar, Trombay, Malad for flood rescue if required, the BMC release said.
In addition to this, six Flood Rescue Teams of Mumbai Fire Brigade will be posted at the Regional Command Centres and emergency support functions like BEST (bus transport system), police, traffic police and education officers have been alerted.
The education officers monitoring school premises in all 24 administrative wards have been asked to keep shelter schools open 247. Dewatering pumps will be kept ready and flood-prone spots will be monitored closely during the heavy rain period, statement said.
As per the IMD forecast, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts on June 9. There is a similar forecast for the six districts of Konkan region, including Mumbai, and surrounding areas on June 10 and 11.

Mumbai, Dec 18: At least twelve people were killed and half-a-dozen feared trapped in a major fire that engulfed a shop in Andheri east area early Monday morning.
According to the BMC Disaster Control, the fire broke around 0430 hrs on the ground floor of the 'Bhanu Farsan' shop on Khairani Road, near Laxmi Narayan Temple of Sakinaka.
At least 12 people were trapped in the loft, which later collapsed due to the heat. 
All of them were pulled out from under the debris but were declared brought dead, said Dr Shital, assistant medical officer, Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar.
The fire quickly spread to electric wiring, huge stock of eatables, cloth sheets and furniture, trapping many of the workers employed in the shop, said the shop proprietor.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, but around five to six workers managed to escape to safety, eyewitnesses said.
People sleeping inside the shop got trapped, while those sleeping outside escaped unhurt, police said. 
Three fire-tenders, four jumbo water tankers and ambulances fought the blaze which was extinguished within a few minutes, but left a huge trail of deaths and destruction.
Police have launched a probe to investigate into the matter. UNI
