Nagpur, Jun 23 :   A fire broke out Sunday evening in the BJP office at Ganeshpeth area in Nagpur when a function was underway, a party functionary said, adding that all present managed to move out safely.

BJP spokesperson Chandan Goswami said a switch board on the fifth floor of Mangalam Tower, where the function was being held, caught fire at around 5:30pm, possibly due to a short-circuit, and the blaze cut power supply, plunging the hall into darkness.

"(Nagpur West) MLA Sudhakar Deshmukh was addressing the gathering when the fire started. MLAs, officer-bearers, workers and journalists assembled at the hall managed to move out safely. Fire extinguishers in the hall were used to doused the blaze," he said.

The programme, to mark the appointment of former Nagpur mayor Pravin Datke as city BJP chief, was completed in a hall on the ground floor later, Goswami said.         [Agencies]


Gopalganj (Bihar), Feb 22 :  Seven persons including four children were charred to death in a fire that broke out in a village in Gopalganj district on Friday, a top district official said.

According to District Magistrate, Gopalganj, Animesh Kumar Parashar, the incident took place at Bakhri village in the early hours killing Bakridan Shah (36), Husntara Khatoon (35), Sufrina (8), Hasanuddin Miyan (24), Salauddin (7) and Shamima (8) besides a seven-month-old boy.

All the deceased belonged to the same extended family and they lived in a hutment which caught fire, apparently, on account of a short circuit, the District Magistrate said.                    [Agencies]



New Delhi, Jan 11 : A fire broke out in a three-storey building in a furniture market in west Delhi's Kirti Nagar area in the early hours of Friday, Delhi Fire Service officials said Friday. 

A call about the blaze was received at 12.05 am and thirty fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was brought under control by 4.40 am, a senior official from Delhi Fire Service said. 

The official added that no injuries or casualties were reported. However, the cause of fire is yet to ascertained.          PTI

Kolkata, Oct 3: A fire broke out in the dispensary of the state-run Medical College and Hospital here Wednesday, fire officials said.

Patients were evacuated from the top floor of the building as a precautionary measure, they said.

No one has been injured in the the blaze that broke out at 8 am in the dispensary located on the ground floor. Ten fire tenders have been engaged for taming the fire, the officials said.

Thick smoke was seen billowing from the ground floor of the hospital's main building where the dispensary is housed.

A senior fire official said the fire has been brought under control.

A disaster management team of the Kolkata Police, fire officials and senior officials are on the spot.

"I have been told that patients have been evacuated. We are looking into the incident," Mayor Sovan Chattopadhyay said.

A call about the fire was received at 7 am and five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was doused within an hour, a senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service said.

No injury or casualty was reported, he added.

New Delhi, Sep 24: A fire broke out Monday at a factory of plastic bags in Samaipur Badli Industrial area, the Delhi Fire Service said.

A call about the fire was received at 7:20 am and immediately four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused within 40 minutes, a senior officer of Delhi Fire Service said.

No injury or casualties were reported, he said.

The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.

Chennai, Sep 21: A bus belonging to IndiGo Airlines caught fire at the airport here while ferrying passengers of a domestic in-bound flight, according to airport officials.

No one was injured in the incident Thursday as the fire was doused immediately, they said.

The bus caught fire when it was nearing the arrival point with about 50 passengers on board.

Preliminary assessment indicated "not much damage" either to the interiors or the exteriors of the bus, the officials said.

Authorities are looking into the incident.

Kolkata, Sep 19: The massive fire that broke out at Bagree Market in Burrabazar area of the city on Sunday is now "completely" under control, a senior officer of the fire department said Wednesday.

At present, the process of cooling down was on, the officer said.

The fire gutted at least 1,000 business establishments inside the G+5 building, causing huge losses to traders ahead of Durga Puja.

The state government has directed the police and the fire department to find out the cause of the fire and initiate strict legal action against those found guilty.

An FIR has been registered against owners of the building.

Kolkata, Sep 18: The massive fire at Bagree Market in Burrabazar area in the business hub of the city has been brought under control after two days, a senior officer of the fire department said Tuesday.

At the moment the process of "cooling down" was on at the Bagree Market and 15 fire tenders have been pressed into service for it, Director General (DG) of West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services Jag Mohan said.

"The fire has been brought under control. Our officers kept on fighting the blaze and they fought throughout the night. We are continuing our fight as the cooling process is on," Jag Mohan said.

There was immense heat inside the building and it made things very difficult for fire fighters to continue, he said.

No one was injured in the fire, he added.

Another fire department officer said cracks were found on the walls of the building and precautionary measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incident.

"Shopkeepers and a few residents of adjacent buildings have been evacuated. A few cracks were seen on the walls of the Bagree Market building. We are not taking any chances," the officer said.

The massive fire broke out at Bagree Market around 2.30 am on Sunday, gutting at least 1,000 business establishments inside the G+5 building and causing huge losses to traders ahead of Durga Puja.

The state government has directed the police and the fire department to find out the cause of the fire and initiate strict legal action against those found guilty in this mishap.

Police have been directed to summon owners of the building.

Kolkata, Sep 17: A fire broke out at Jadubabu's Bazar, a retail market in south Kolkata on Monday, a Fire Brigade official said.

The fire broke out in the afternoon, the official said.

The fire at Jadubabu bazar broke out a day after the devastating fire at Bagree Market, which is still to be put out.

Three fire tenders have been rushed to the spot, the official said.

The Jadubabu bazar is located in Bhawanipore area of the city.

Mumbai, Sep 11: A fire broke out Tuesday in a commercial building in suburban Andheri, an official said.

A fire personnel received burn injuries while trying to douse the flames, he said.

The blaze erupted around 10 am on the second floor of the seven-storey building at the Madhur Industrial Estate in Andheri, a fire brigade official said.

"The fire was confined to the electric wiring and office furniture of a medical store situated on the building's second floor," the official said.

Eight fire fighting engines, a water tanker and five ambulances were rushed to the spot, he said, adding that efforts were on to douse the blaze, he said.

A fire official received burn injuries on his hands and was taken to the Cooper Hospital for treatment, he said.

"No office-goer was injured in the mishap," the official said, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

Mumbai, Sep 7: A minor fire broke out at a pub near the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai Friday morning, a civic official said.

The incident took place at Tamasha pub located on the ground floor of a building near the Kamala Mills compound around 11.30 am, a senior official of the Disaster Management Cell of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

The blaze, which was triggered by short-circuit, was extinguished within minutes, the official said.

"The fire was doused even before the fire brigade team arrived," he said.

The incident brought back bitter memories of the devastating blaze at the Mojo's Bistro and 1 Above pub at Kamala Mills which killed 14 persons and injured several others on December 29 last year.

Mumbai, Sep 4: A fire engulfed an industrial area in suburban Malad Tuesday morning, but no casualty was reported, a civic official said.

The blaze erupted in a commercial unit near Somwar Bazar in the Bombay Talkies industrial area around 11.30 am, he said.

Eight fire fighting engines and three jumbo tankers were rushed to the site and the blaze was brought under control, the official said.

"The fire broke out at 11.27 am and our control room was informed at 11.50 am. No casualty or injury was reported in the mishap," he said.

Mumbai police personnel, ambulance and officials of the civic ward concerned also reached the site, he said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, the official said.

Local Congress MLA Aslam Sheikh demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) come up with a comprehensive plan to check the increasing fire incidents in the megacity.

On August 22, a fire broke out on the 12th floor of a posh high-rise residential building in Dadar area, killing four people and injuring 16 others.

On August 27, a fire engulfed a three-storey residential building in Parel area, but there was no casualty.

New Delhi, Aug 20: A fire broke out at a nursing college in south Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) today, said a Delhi Fire Service official.

A call about the fire was received at 12:20 pm. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire broke out on the second floor of the nursing college, the official said.

The fire was doused by 12:50 pm. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained, he said.

No injury or casualty has been reported yet, he added.

A senior officer from the Delhi Fire Service said that they received a call about the blaze at 10:50 am.

Athens, Jul 24: The death toll from a series of fires sweeping Greece climbed to 50 today with a Red Cross official reporting the discovery of 26 more bodies at a seaside resort.

The authorities had previously announced 24 deaths and more than 150 injuries from wildfires around the Athens region, before finding 26 dead at a villa in the coastal town of Mati.

Shimla, July 23: Five persons were burnt alive after a fire broke out at a house in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district this morning, an official said.

Mandi Deputy Commissioner Rugved Thakur told that a marriage function was going on in the house in Ner Chowk when the fire broke out.

Two rooms of the house were completely charred in the blaze.

The exact reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained.

He said it took some time for fire engines to reach the spot to put out the fire.

Shimla, Jul 20: A fire that broke out in a building near a petrol pump here was put out in time today morning, officials said.

As many as four fire engines and 17 fire fighters were sent to put out the blaze that started at around 9.45 am in the building in Sanjauli. No one was injured, they added.

It took one-and-a-half-hours to extinguish the fire before it could spread to the nearby petrol pump and a shopping mall, the officials said, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

Furniture and other valuables worth around Rs 2.5 lakh inside the building -- owned by petrol pump owner D D Mehta's wife, Priya Mehta -- were gutted. But property worth Rs 15 crore was saved by timely action, the fire officials said.

Panaji, Jun 23 : A fact-finding committee has been formed to investigate the fire that broke out in the Hospicio Hospital in Margao yesterday evening, Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said today.

The committee comprises the state Health Secretary, Director of Health Services Dr Sanjiv Dalvi, Medical Superintendent of Hospicio Hospital Dr Irea Almeida and Additional Secretary (Health) Dr Rajnanda Desai, Rane informed.

The fire had engulfed the second floor of the hospital, operating out of a Portuguese-era building, in South Goa district and had gutted the hospital's kidney dialysis facility.

No one was injured in the fire that broke out around 5:45 pm as the patients had already moved out of the floor by 4 pm, medical authorities had said yesterday.

The fire was doused within half an hour, officials had said yesterday.

Rane, who visited the hospital today, said that the committee will submit a report on the fire to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.   PTI 
Thane (Maha), Jun 21 :  A fire destroyed at least 10 warehouses, where tyres and rags were stored, in the Mumbra township here in the wee hours today, an official said.

No casualty was reported in the mishap, he said.

The blaze erupted around 4 am in one of the godowns on Khardi road and spread rapidly engulfing nine other warehouses located in the vicinity, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

The old and worn-out clothes, rubber tyres and other material kept in the godowns aggravated the blaze.

Three scooters parked in the area were also charred, he said.

Three fire engines were rushed to the spot and managed douse the flames, the official said, adding that the cooling operation was underway.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he added.
