Bangalore, Apr 5: Electioneering in Karnataka is entering crucial phase around next five days as both the Congress and the BJP are set to release their respective list of candidates by April 10.
According to BJP sources, the party's central committee that comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi among top leaders may give its nod to first list of candidates for May 12 polls on April 10 while Congress state unit screening committee will make its recommendation to the party high command latest by April 9-10.
For BJP, the next few days would be critical in more ways than one as party chief Amit Shah is likely to pay
visit to crucial hubs like Hyderabad-Karnataka region of Ballary, Gadag and Raichur.
This region is politically sensitive due to the supposed influence of mining baron G Janardhana Reddy, but a scan tainted business tycoon.
The party chief Amit Shah had earlier tried to downplay Reddy's influence saying BJP has no relationship with him; but local BJP insiders suggest the 'importance' of Janardhana Reddy factor cannot be ignored completely as the saffron party needs Mr Reddy's close aide B Sriramulu.
An influential leader in his own right as the face of Scheduled Tribe Nayaka community, the BJP poll strategists known that Sriramalu's rebellion against BJP in 2013 had cost the party dearly as a newly floated BSR-Congress had polled 2.7 per cent of the votes eating chiefly into BJP's vote share.
"Things may get clearer after Amit Shah's visit into the region, we are hopeful of winning BJP support base in these areas as the people here had voted overwhelmingly in 2008 and also later in 2014 Assembly polls," a key BJP leader said.
In BJP's first list of candidates, the decision could be chiefly about the sitting MLAs and they may be repeated.
However, in few pockets rebellion has started surfacing forcing state unit chief B S Yeddyurappa to meet some disgruntled leaders and placate them.
Lately, he met former Minister H Halappa, who has sounded his displeasure over the party's keenness to field Kumar Bangarappa, son of a former Chief Minister, from Sorab Assembly in Shivamogga district.
Mr Halappa had represented this seat between 2008 and 2013 but lost five years back to JD(S) nominee and Kumar Bangarappa's brother S Madhu Bangarappa.
Another prominent BJP leader V Somanna and a Lingayat leader is also peeved as his plea for Hanur constituency in Chamarajanagar district might be rejected.
This could actually foment further internal squabble in the saffron outfit as Mr Somanna, the former Housing Minister under Yeddyurappa, is said to have changed loyalty to Ananth Kumar camp.
Apparently, Mr Yeddyurappa wanted Somanna to join his Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP) in 2012 but Somanna had decided to stay back in BJP. However, now for the prestigious Hanur assembly segment, Mr Yeddyurappa seemed to be in favour of fielding senior leader Parimala Nagappa's son Preetam Nagappa.
In electoral sense, the Hyderabad-Karnataka region is dominated by the Lingayats thus giving BJP an advantage, but any mistake can upset the entire apple-cart of caste idioms.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge is a prominent opposition face in the region but does not hold a political grip to influence the voting pattern as such.
However, Junior Kharge - Priyank won the Chittapur (Scheduled Caste reserved) constituency in 2013 - actually winning back the seat for Congress as in 2009 by polls BJP's Valmiki Nayak had defeated Priyank.
In 2008 Assembly polls, Mallikarjun Kharge had won the seat braving a strong pro-Yeddyurappa wave in the region. UNI

Bangalore/New Delhi, Apr 4: In the run up to the crucial polls in Karnataka wherein poll pundits rate Congress in an 'advantage' stage, the progeny of netas are eyeing party tickets and among those who are likely to be obliged include Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yathindra.
In fact, grapevine is once it was made clear that Siddaramaiah will be given "almost a free hand" in chalking out party's poll strategy and also be the 'face' of the party, the Chief Minister had made it clear that his seat Varuna should go to his son and that he would move to Chamundeshwari.
Dr Yathindra, who ran a pathology lab, is actually only a reluctant entrant to politics and plunged into it after his elder brother Rakesh Siddaramaiah, the eldest son of Chief Minister, died of multi-organ failure in Belgium in 2016.
Among others, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy is keen to field his daughter Sowmya Reddy from Jayanagar while Public Works Minister HC Mahadevappa wants that his seat T Narsipur goes to his son Sunil Bose.
But the corruption' tag could be used by Mahadevappa's detractors. In 2016, a session judge in Mysuru had summoned Sunil Bose in connection with a Lokayukta case booked against a senior geologist for demanding bribe to issue permit to transport sand.
Mr Mahadevappa has offered to move to CV Raman Nagar constituency - a request that is being opposed by the powerful 43-member election screening committee formed by party president Rahul Gandhi.
Apparently, the Congress leadership does not want to antagonise local leader P Ramesh who had lost the seat to BJP five years back. In fact, BJP has been winning the seat from 2008 on wards.
Without doubt, the game of dynastic politics is nothing new in Congress and in fact in 2013 polls also, the party had given tickets to 18 candidates who are relatives of big time netas. Among them also included B K Shivaram, a retired police official and brother of onetime trusted aide of Rahul Gandhi - BK Hariprasad.
Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's son Priyank was given party ticket to contest from Chittapur constituency and the honour may be vested upon him yet again.
In 2013, Congress list of relatives included Kumar Bangarappa, son of former C M S. Bangarappa and Dinesh Gundu Rao, also a son of another former CM Gundu Rao.
Incidentally, Kumar Bangarappa, who won the seat in 2004 on Congress ticket but lost in 2008 and 2013, has joined BJP and is seeking saffron party ticket from Sorab Assembly constituency in Shivamogga district. In yet another coincidence and accidental politics, Kumar's brother Madhu Bangarappa is seeking re-election on JD(S) ticket from the same assembly segment.
The Congress high command has given so far mixed signals. A section of leaders stress that the emphasis is purely on 'victory' as Karnataka win will certainly put Congress on the road to revival at the national level, while at the same time others say the 'new Congress chief' (Rahul Gandhi) wants to encourage new talent and also wants to push the younger lots.
It is in view of these mixed signals Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief G Parameshwara - and his associates - had insisted on restricting the ticket distribution to ‘One family, One ticket’ policy. The suggestion was more taken as a 'tool' devised to deprive Chief Minister Siddaramaiah get ticket for his son and Mr Rahul Gandhi seemed to have given his nod in favour of the Chief Minister only.
"The Congress as a political party has legacy of children succeeding their parents and walking in their shoes. Therefore, the argument of winnability has come as a big opportunity for sons, daughters and even grand children of established players. And we are not surprised by this," a senior Congress leader, whose son is a ticket aspirant, told.
Sources said on March 15, the screening committee has already shortlisted the names of ticket aspirants from over 3000 to around 1500 for 224-member assembly. Out of these, the state unit has favoured repeating most of the sitting 123 legislators - allowing of course modest changes in constituencies especially keeping the caste factors in mind.
Interesting political permutation and combination has surfaced in Chamundeahwari constituency -- where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is all set to contest. Actually it is in this segment under Mysuru district that Siddaramaiah 'rebuilt' his entire political career as a socialist and a lieutenant of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. UNI

New Delhi/Bangalore, Apr 2: All elections produce heroes and villains. In the run up to the 2018 big battle for corridors of power in Karnataka, the swamijis, yogis and godmen may enter electoral fray to reduce reining political stalwarts to fading players in their own courtyard.
Unlike past, when the electoral war-cry used to be confined between established political war heroes and at best silver screen stars, there is almost a new scenario this time with both the Congress and the BJP trying to not only win over the 'blessings' of pontiffs but also are more than keen to field them directly in the electoral fray.
To start, the BJP feels it can give tough fight to at least a few incumbent Karnataka ministers like Social Welfare minister H Anjaneya from Chitradurga and Labour Minister Santosh Lad from Kalaghatagi constituency.
The saffron party, sources said, is seriously considering the candidature of Chennaiah Swamiji of the Madara Chennaiah Mutt from Chitradurga and is expected to give a tough fight to the state Social Welfare minister H Anjaneya, who is an influential leader of the Madiga community and was once a treasurer of the Mutt.
Underlining the importance this brand of yogis and priests taking it to the electoral contest, BJP chief Amit Shah during his visit to Karnataka did meet Chennaiah Swamiji.
Swamiji belongs to the Madigas - a low caste group - who are already aggrieved with the Congress regime for not granting "internal share in reservation" amongst the Scheduled Caste quota and thus there are ample chance that this Mutt takes a right wing leaning.
The Congress is reportedly trying to field a yogi or a religious leader from Athani in Belagavi district - a Hindutva stronghold, which returned Lakshman Sangappa Savadi of BJP in 2013 despite strong "anti-BJP mood" in the region.
In Kalaghatagi constituency against the incumbent Labour Minister Santosh Lad, the BJP may try to field Basavananda Swami, who is just 40 and has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past.
Among the villains or heroes for this year's assembly polls would also include old war horse - senior Congress leader Jaffer Sharief, who has ventilated his disapproval to the 'divide Lingayat card' of his party and called it a mere "political stunt".
Among the Muslims leaders, however, all eyes will be on community leaders and sitting MLAs like Iqbal Ansari and Zameer Ahmed Khan - who quit JD(S) of H D Deve Gowada and H D Kumaraswamy - and joined Congress in presence of none other than Rahul Gandhi.
In an attempt to judge the political situation, it can be stated here the declining power base of JD(S) among Muslims will be crucial as the minority community "lost faith" in Kumaraswamy once he allied with BJP from 2006 and 2007.
On the other hand Mr Kumaraswamy also earned a negative tag of being a 'bachan brashta" leader (someone who did not keep his words) when he had declined to "transfer power to B S Yeddyurappa" after he formed the government with the BJP support.
In fact, Mr Rahul Gandhi has already called JD(S) "B team of BJP" - a remark that has ultimately provoked even the likes of Mamata Banerjee to advise both the JD(S) and the Congress to settle their disputes and join hands in a purposeful manner to ensure defeat of the BJP.
Once the people's verdict is delivered, in the ultimate all eyes will be on how some promising stars are forced to simply resign to their cocoons and how some galaxy of political heavyweights and yogis get the opportunity to resort to political muscle flexing. UNI

New Delhi/Bangalore, Mar 26: BJP national president Amit Shah on Monday met 'Walking God' Sri Sri Shivakumara Swamiji, chief pontiff of Siddaganga Mutt at Tumakuru in Karnataka and sought his blessing.
"Today I had the good fortune to seek blessings from the 'Walking God' Sri Sri Sri Sh ivakumara Swamiji of Siddhaganga Mutt, Tumakuru. His tireless work even at his advanced age is inspiring. His life is a living lesson and guiding light for all of us,"Mr Shah tweeted along with photographs of his falling on the feet of the popular sage.
Emerging out after the meeting, Mr Shah told mediapersons: "This is for the first time I got an opportunity to meet the great sage. I am pleased to get his blessings.....Mere looking at him gives the impression that one has met God".
The meeting is considered significant in the wake of political row sparked off in poll-bound Karnataka after the Congress government in the state has decided to designate Lingayat community as a 'separate religious group'.
Lingayats form considerable size of the electorate in the state and the state government move is said to have caused some embarrassment to the BJP as the party was banking on popular Lingayat leader B S Yeddyurappa for the ensuing elections.
"The blessing of Swamiji will definitely give boost to our strength when the BJP is fighting the elections under the leadership of Yeddyurappa," Mr Amit Shah later said. UNI

124-lakh-JK-youth-to-be-imparted-skill-training-in-3-yrs-with-an-allocation-of-Rs-1601-cr

BANGALORE, AUGUST 05: Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Law and Justice Abdul Haq, on the directions of Chief Minister, Ms Mehbooba Mufti, today visited Bangalore to get first hand appraisal of the facilities and training being provided  to the JK youth under Himayat Scheme (DDU-GKY).
Pertinently, the Minister had on July 17 this year flagged off from Srinagar the first batch of 61 youth for employment-guaranteed skill training under Himayat Scheme.
These youth including 11 girls and 50 boys  are being trained at Apollo MedSkills (One of the Project Implementing Agencies) at Bangalore.
The Minister was accompanied by Commissioner Secretary Rural Development Nirmal Sharma, Mission Director State Rural Livelihood Mission, Javaid Bakshi, CEO Apollo MedSkills, Dr Srinivasan, Vice President Apollo MedSkills Sridhar, Director National Institute of RDD&PR Hyderabad, SS Raju, Mission Director Karnataka State Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society Sushama Godbole, officials of J&K and Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Mission besides officials of the Apollo MedSkills.
Abdul Haq said Himayat is a skill development cum placement programme for unemployed youth in J&K under the umbrella of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gramin Koushalaya Yojana (DDU-GKY), Union Ministry of Rural Development with focus on sustainable employment for rural poor youth. He said JKSRLM has been entrusted with the responsibility of training and placing over 1.24 lakh JK youth with an allocation of Rs 1601.51 crore for a period of 3 years.
The Minister visited the lecture rooms, library and laboratories where students are getting trained as Dialysis Technicians and Emergency Medical Technicians. Officials at the institution briefed the Minister about the training being imparted and the facilities being provided to the students.
While interacting with the Minister, the students expressed satisfaction over the facilities being provided to them and also put forth some grievances which were resolved on the spot. The Minister also visited classrooms and attended lecturers being delivered by the trainers to the students.
The trainers and the teaching staff at the Apollo MedSkills informed the minister that the batch from J&K state is one of the finest batches as the students are very talented, responsive and intelligent.
Abdul Haq said Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti launched the remodeled Himayat scheme earlier this year with an aim to train the unemployed youth in different sectors so that they get employment at the earliest. He said around three projects have been sanctioned by JKSRLM. He said 9751 candidates are to be covered in the present round of four project applications and that first installment has been released to the PIAs including Surya, Apollo and Manpower for the mobilization of candidates which is under progress.
Later Abdul Haq along with Karnataka Minister for RDD HK Patil met students from J&K who are studying in various colleges of Karnataka. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patil said the students of Kashmir are guests of the Karnataka government and it will ensure their safety and security during their stay in the state. He said the students should not feel that they are away from the home as they are equal citizens of the nation and are a part of our family.
Mr Patil assured the minister that he will act as the guardian and the care-taker of the Kashmiri students to ensure that they feel at home during their stay in Karnataka. He asked the students and the officials to directly contact him in case they need any assistance from the Karnataka government.
While addressing the students, Abdul Haq asked them to dedicate their precious time in studies and asked them to interact with the local students to know about diverse cultures of the country that will help in bridging the gaps and help in removing the stereotypes.

Castigating certain sections of electronic media, the Minister said unfortunately some media channels are hell bent to portray Kashmir in a negative way by blowing minor issues out of proportion. He appealed media to be part of the solution, instead of fueling trouble, by facilitating in bridging the gap thereby connecting people and helping in addressing the alienation of Kashmiri youth.
