Agartala, Jan 16 :  Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday launched a Rs 1,000-crore Sustainable Catchment Forest Management (SCATFORM) project for local communities living in and around forest areas in the state.

Deb said people residing in such areas have been facing problems in accessing forest resources and water, due to soil erosion.

"The project would help improve forests in the targeted catchment areas, and the ecosystem would be conserved. It would also create livelihood of the people living in and around the forest areas," he said.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would bear 80 per cent of the cost and the rest would be funded by the state and central governments.

A total of 1,447 check dams will be set up in hilly areas in seven districts out of the total eight districts of Tripura within a timeframe of 10 years, the CM added.                              PTI

Agartala, Sep 19: Myanmar-based drug peddlers have issued a threat to the life of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb as he has called for making the state drugs-free, the ruling BJP in Tripura has claimed.

Veteran BJP leader and former minister Ratan Chakraborty told a press conference on Tuesday that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had received reports that drug peddlers in Myanmar had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Deb.

"We have also got inputs from our party sources," Chakraborty said.

The drug peddlers in the region were unhappy with the chief minister as he had called for making the north-eastern state drugs-free, he added.

"So, they have hatched a conspiracy to kill the chief minister," the BJP leader said.

When contacted, police officers refused to comment on the matter.

Chakraborty said the BJP workers were also asked to ensure that the chief minister's security cordon was not breached under any condition.

According to reports, over 50,000 kg cannabis have been seized, along with narcotic pills, heroin, brown sugar and other intoxicants, in the last six months in Tripura and over 120 people arrested in connection with these seizures. (PTI)

Agartala, Jun 23 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has agreed to take over investigations into the killings of two journalists in Tripura last year, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said.

Santanu Bhowmik, who worked for a local television channel, was killed when he went to cover a road blockade agitation in the Mandwai area of West Tripura district on September 21 last year.

Another journalist, Sudip Dutta Bhowmik, a crime reporter with a vernacular newspaper, was killed inside the headquarters of the Tripura State Rifles' (TSR) 2nd battalion at RK Nagar in the same district on November 20 last year.

The trial in the Sudip Dutta Bhowmik case in the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court was stopped following orders from the Tripura High Court.

The state police's Special Investigating Team (SIT) had probed the killing and filed a charge sheet. It also investigated the Santanu Bhowmik case, but hasn't filed a charge sheet yet.

The CBI has decided to take over the investigations into the cases, Biplab Kumar Deb said.

Deb told reporters late last night that the state cabinet had sent separate proposals to the Centre to probe the two cases to ensure justice to the affected families.

"Today, we feel relieved as the CBI is going to investigate both the cases. With this, the BJP-IPFT government has fulfilled yet another promise made in the party's vision document," he said.

CBI sleuths would investigate the cases to ensure justice to the two families. The government had taken positive steps so that the media could work with full freedom in Tripura, he said.

Deb said the government had already taken steps for a steep hike in pension for accredited journalists -- from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 -- and providing financial assistance to the ailing scribes.

Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath said democracy turns fragile "when the media is not free to perform its duty".

"As the BJP's state unit president, Biplab Kumar Deb had promised a CBI probe into the two cases if the party was voted to power. Today, the promise has been fulfilled," he added.

The Agartala Press Club and other journalists' bodies, which had staged protests in the capital town demanding a CBI probe into the killings, have welcomed the decision.PTI

Agartala, May 15 : Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb congratulated BJP all India president Amit Shah, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP state leadership for their comfortable victory in Karnataka assembly election.
Talking to UNI,Deb said “The Karnataka result reflects that the people would not accept the negative
politics what Congress did. People of the state voted against the misrule of Congress in last five years. Rahul Gandhi must introspect their political philosophy and relentless falsehood campaign against BJP.”
The election result of Karnataka made it clear that the people of the country largely supported the development agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the modern political thoughts of BJP. The caste based politics and political criminalism were rejected in the country today and Karnataka is a classic example, Deb stated.
“The Congress always before any election pursues communal agenda or creates political tension across the country to gain mileage and there was no difference in case of Karnataka election. Congress leaders demonstrated in front of Rashtrapati Bhawan with 150 MPs against BJP president Amit Shah in a false case. Later, Supreme Court said it was false but Congress did not learn any lesson. But I wish after Karnataka result, Rahul team will realize the pulse of common Indian,” Deb added.UNI
