Agartala, Aug 5  :  Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday welcomed the Centre's decision to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution.

The government on Monday revoked Article 370 to take away Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and proposed the bifurcation of the state into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

"Special status for J&K ends, Jammu & Kashmir is now a Union Territory with assembly & Ladakh would be separate Union Territory with no legislature. I welcome @narendramodi ji led Govt's 'J&K reorganization bill' for the betterment of valley's people," Deb tweeted.

He further said, "Dream of Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee's 'Ek desh, Ek Vidhan, Ek Pradhan aur Ek Nishan' has become true today".                                           [Agencies]

Agartala, Jun 21 :   Tripura government has decided to hand over 20 state-run schools including 13 closed institutions to ISKCON to run them, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said Friday.

The 13 schools are closed as they don't have any student. In 147 other government schools there are a maximum of only 10 students, he said.

"The council of ministers in its meeting held on Thursday evening decided to hand over 20 schools including the closed 13 schools and seven schools from 147 schools, which have maximum 10 students to the authorities of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), who agreed to provide quality education in those schools", Nath told a press conference.

'Indian Tribal Care Trust', a wing of ISKCON would run the schools, Nath said, adding the schools are located in remote and tribal areas of the state.

The minister said the BJP-IPFT government which came to power in the state last year after ousting the Left Front was trying to reform the education system in the state.

"Initially they (ISKCON) opted for 53 schools but we have decided to give them 20 schools for five years of which 7 in West Tripura district, one in Gomati district, two in Khowai district, three in Sepahijala district and seven in South Tripura district, would be handed over to them for five years. They promised us to impart quality education", the Education minister said.

Nath said the state government and 'Indian Tribal Care Trust' would soon sign a MoU and the terms and conditions include that at least there would be 30 students in each of the schools and the schools must be affiliated to the CBSE or ICSE and they should follow the guidelines of Right to Education Act of the Central government.

The state government would distribute free books, uniforms and mid-day meals and the ownership right would be with the state government, he said.

Tripura has 4,389 government and government-aided schools, he said.

Nath said the council of ministers also decided to introduce metered auto-rickshaw service in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas and town bus service for creating a better transport network system to commuters.                                [Agencies]

Agartala, Feb 25 :  Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma on Monday presented a tax-free and zero-deficit budget of Rs 17,530.46 crore for the fiscal 2019-20.

He later told reporters that the state government could achieve 14.5 per cent revenue growth compared to last last year, due to better tax management and administrative disciplines.

In the budget speech, Dev Varma, who is also the finance minister of the state, said the collection of own tax revenue is projected at Rs 2,048.95 crore, while non-tax revenue is estimated at Rs 285.21 crore in 2019-20.

The total receipts from the Centre is projected at Rs 12,764.30 crore in the budget estimate, and the total expenditure at Rs 17,530.46 crore, including revenue expenditure and capital expenditure.

The gross borrowings for 2019-20 is estimated at about Rs 2,430 crore, the minister said.

Dev Varma said the state government has decided to increase the social pensions from Rs 700 to Rs 1,000 per month in the first phase for certain categories of beneficiaries.

He said sugar at subsidised rates will be supplied to households under all categories in the next financial year.

Free smart phones will also be provided to students completing their graduation.

The minister said under the Mini Dairy scheme of NABARD, 10,000 cows (2 cows per family) to women members of 5,000 families will be provided to give a boost to milk production in the state, for which the Tripura government shall provide 100 per cent interest subvention.

A total of 1,867 check dams will be constructed, which will create "enormous" opportunities for pisciculture, drinking water supply and irrigation, he said.

Dev Varma added that 2,110 self-help groups will be formed and livelihood opportunities will be created for 52,030 families.                    [Agrencies]

Agartala, Jan 16 :  Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday launched a Rs 1,000-crore Sustainable Catchment Forest Management (SCATFORM) project for local communities living in and around forest areas in the state.

Deb said people residing in such areas have been facing problems in accessing forest resources and water, due to soil erosion.

"The project would help improve forests in the targeted catchment areas, and the ecosystem would be conserved. It would also create livelihood of the people living in and around the forest areas," he said.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) would bear 80 per cent of the cost and the rest would be funded by the state and central governments.

A total of 1,447 check dams will be set up in hilly areas in seven districts out of the total eight districts of Tripura within a timeframe of 10 years, the CM added.                              PTI

Aizawl, Oct 8: Members of the Bru community, currently lodged in six relief camps of Tripura, will be exercising their franchise in Mizoram when it goes to polls on November 28, a top state election department official said Monday.

The tenure of the 40-member Assembly expires on December 15.

"The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed officials in the state to make poll arrangements in Mizoram for displaced Bru families," Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) SB Shashank told reporters here.

The ECI, however, was yet to issue detailed guidelines on the process that needs be followed to move Bru voters to Mizoram for the polling exercise, he said.

"Of the 11,232 Bru voters in Tripura - 8,777 are from Mamit district, along Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border, 1,732 from Kolasib district of the state, along Assam border, and 723 from southern Mizoram's Lunglei district," the CEO said.

During the 2013 assembly elections, Bru members were able to cast votes from their respective relief camps. The following year, too, displaced voters had exercised their franchise for parliamentary election from Tripura.

An election department official said on the condition of anonymity that making adequate arrangements for Bru voters to cast votes in their respective polling stations would be a "herculean task".

He suggested establishing designated polling stations at a border town inside the state for the displaced people.

"Setting up designated polling stations at a border town, like Kanhmun, where Bru voters can exercise their franchise, might be the best bet," he added.

The voters' list in six Tripura relief camps were updated recently along with rest of the state amid protests by members of civil societies, who demanded that the process be undertaken after the final repatriation process.

Thousands of Bru refugees from Mizoram fled to Tripura after ethnic violence of 1997. The clashes broke out after a forest official was killed by Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) militants.

The Centre, in association with the governments of Mizoram and Tripura, had been trying to repatriate displaced Brus in phases.

The final repatriation process, however, fizzled out as only around 50 of 5,4007 families shifted to Mizoram between August and September.

Bru members have cited "unsatisfactory repatriation package" as reason for not returning to their home state. (PTI)

Itanagar, Sep 29: Fashion designers from the UK and India are set to come together to be part of a project aimed at benefiting women textile workers of the north-east.

The British Council and IMG Reliance signed an agreement last month to help exotic indigenous textile products of the region get a global platform through the project - 'A Telegram from Tripura', a senior official of the Council said.

"The project will bring UK designer Bethany Williams and Indian designer Aratrik Dev Varman together to explore new fashion systems and approaches with women textile workers of the north-east region in focus," Director of the British Council in India, Alan Gemmell, told PTI in an interview.

IMG Reliance is a joint venture between IMG Worldwide of the US and Reliance Industries.

However, it is not immediately known when the UK designer would reach India and meet Dev Varman, who hails from Tripura.

The final work, to be presented at the Lakme Fashion Week in February next year, will showcase female textile artisans and demonstrate how design innovation can promote a fairer, more inclusive fashion industry, Gemmell said.

"We want friendship between India and the northeast, in particular by bringing art and culture, and educational opportunities from our country," he said.

The British Council would also give scholarship to 500 students from India for academic exchange programme in 44 universities of the UK.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Council in India, it awarded scholarships to 100 Indian women to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects at premier higher education institutions in the UK, Gemell added. (PTI)

New Delhi, Sep 19: At least 30 Bru refugee families, who have been living in camps in Tripura for over two decades, returned to Mizoram on Wednesday as part of a Home Ministry-monitored rehabilitation package, an official said.

The Bru families would be given a one-time financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh, a house, a monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 and free ration for two years as per the agreement signed by the representatives of the Bru refugees, the governments of Mizoram and Tripura and the Centre.

"About 30 Bru (Reang) families from Tripura are going back to Mizoram after 20 years as part of central repatriation package," a senior Home Ministry official told.

A total of 5,407 Bru families, who were displaced from Mizoram due to ethnic tension, have been living in various camps in Tripura since 1997.

The process Wednesday started after a group of the refugees walked out of the agreement signed in July alleging inadequate compensation for their rehabilitation.

The return of 30 Bru families were first since 1997 when around 8,000 Bru refugees have gone back to Mizoram in six batches and have been living peacefully in the state since then.

The total number of Bru community members is 32,876, who belong to 5,407 families currently living in temporary camps in Tripura.

The cost of the entire exercise will be Rs 435 crore till 2020-21 which will be provided by the Home Ministry.

The Mizoram government will ensure security of all repatriated refugees who were identified and verified as per the 1997 electoral rolls of Mizoram.

The Tripura government will ensure that Aadhaar cards are issued to all of them, a bank account is opened and updation of ration cards is undertaken for each of the Bru migrant families.

Eklavya residential schools, making available Jhum cultivation land, issuance of permanent residential and ST certificates, and a special development project for Bru families are the other measures planned for the cohesive resettlement of these families in Mizoram.

The central government, so far, has given Rs 348.90 crore to the Tripura government for the expenses it incurred on maintenance of the Bru familes and Rs 68.90 crore to the Mizoram government for providing assistance to the 8,000 Bru refugees who had already gone back to the state. (PTI)

Agartala, Sep 19: Myanmar-based drug peddlers have issued a threat to the life of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb as he has called for making the state drugs-free, the ruling BJP in Tripura has claimed.

Veteran BJP leader and former minister Ratan Chakraborty told a press conference on Tuesday that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had received reports that drug peddlers in Myanmar had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Deb.

"We have also got inputs from our party sources," Chakraborty said.

The drug peddlers in the region were unhappy with the chief minister as he had called for making the north-eastern state drugs-free, he added.

"So, they have hatched a conspiracy to kill the chief minister," the BJP leader said.

When contacted, police officers refused to comment on the matter.

Chakraborty said the BJP workers were also asked to ensure that the chief minister's security cordon was not breached under any condition.

According to reports, over 50,000 kg cannabis have been seized, along with narcotic pills, heroin, brown sugar and other intoxicants, in the last six months in Tripura and over 120 people arrested in connection with these seizures. (PTI)

Aizawl, Sep 11 : The Centre has appealed to the Bru families housed in Tripura relief camps to return to Mizoram as assistances doled out to them would be withdrawn from October 1.

A meeting was held in Aizawl Monday between the state home department, police and the Centre, which was attended by leaders of the civil societies and representatives of the relief camps.

Ministry of Home Affairs' Joint Secretary (North East) Satyendra Garg said the Bru leaders in the relief camps would identify those who want to be repatriated and submit the names to the Centre and the Mizoram government.

The Bru refugees in the Tripura relief camps presently receive free ration and subsistence allowance of Rs 5 per day per person from the Centre.

The transportation cost for the repatriated families would be borne by the Mizoram government but no state government official would be deployed in the relief camps, as was done earlier, to oversee the process, a senior state home department official who attended the meeting said.

The meeting was convened in the backdrop of a tepid response to the ongoing repatriation process of the Bru refugees from August 25 to September 25 in which only three families returned to Mizoram so far, the official said.

The officials had earlier said that four families were repatriated since the process was kickstarted on August 25.

The official said that the meeting was attended by the state Principal Secretary for Home Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, top home department and police officials, president of the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), leaders of both Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) and Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Coordination Committee and also Elvis Chorkhy, chairman of the Equal Package Demand Committee, representing the Bru families already repatriated to Mizoram.

The state government withdrew the officials deployed ih the relief camps to undertake the physical repatriation process after four days of the commencement of the repatriation.

The Centre was earlier optimistic that the Bru families would return to Mizoram during the repatriation process after inking the agreement on July 3 between Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, chief ministers of Mizoram and Tripura and Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) chief A Sawibunga in Delhi.

As per the agreement, all the Bru refugees were to be repatriated before September 30.

The agreement stipulated that Rs 4 lakh for each repatriated Bru family would be deposited to the bank account of the head of the family which would mature after three years and payment of Rs 1.5 lakh as housing assistance.

Each repatriated Bru family would be given Rs 5,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer every month and a free ration for two years.

Senior Ministry of Home Affairs officials said that the relief would be closed by first week of October and assistance doled out to the inmates will be discontinued forthwith.

Thousands of Brus had been lodged in the Tripura relief camps since late 1997 in the wake of a communal tension triggered by the brutal killing of Lalzawmliana, a forest guard, inside the Dampa Tiger Reserve on October 21, 1997 by Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) militants.

The first attempt to repatriate them from November 16, 2009 not only failed but triggered another wave of exodus after Bru militants gunned down a youth at Bungthuam village, three days before the commencement of the repatriation process.

Though some Bru families had already returned to Mizoram during a number of repatriation processes and on their own will, many of them continued to refuse to leave Tripura till date despite many attempts.PTI

Agartala, Aug 28 :  An obscure colony in the remote South Narayanpura village near India-Bangladesh border is the new address of 39-year-old Minati Das, who along with her family was forced to flee home during the three-decade-long insurgency in Tripura.

Das, along with thousands other displaced families in West Tripura, had since been living in makeshift slums, working as maids and daily wagers to make ends meet.

In a relief that came after thirty years, the BJP-led state government recently handed over land pattas (deeds) to 235 families in West Tripura and Sipahijala districts.

Of them, 55 families have received their deeds earlier this month for settlement at South Narayanpur village.

"This is my shelter now. I am happy with 1296 sq ft area allotted by the government. At least, I have a place to stay," Das said.

Tripura witnessed its worst ethnic riot between the tribal and the non-tribal communities in the 1980s, killing over 6000 people.

Sajal Poddar, the secretary of 'Paschim zila and Sipahijaala Udbastu Unnayan Committee' (organisation for the wellbeing of the homeless), however, claimed that only a small percentage of the total number of families displaced during the insurgency and ethnic riots has received the pattas.

The committee that had been fighting for the rights of the homeless people over the past 18 years demanded a plot and Rs 5 lakh for every family.

"Back then, Sipahijala was a part of West Tripura district. Of the 6,500 families displaced from the district during insurgency, only 202 have received pattas in West Tripura and 35 in Sipahijala," he said.

State Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath, too, agreed that the armed insurgency had rendered thousands of families homeless.

"During my speech in the Assembly as the leader of the opposition in 2006, I had presented a statement which clearly specified that around 3 lakh people from 60,000 families across the state had to flee homes due to the insurgency," he asserted.

After the situation settled down, the families could not return homes as the local indigenous people had taken over their land and property, ruling BJP Vice-President Subal Bhowmick said.

For Rabin Banik, 33, who fled his home at the age of 13 from Jampuijala village in Sipahijala district, the 1296 sq ft land allotted to him in South Narayanpura, enough to build just one room, a makeshift kitchen and a toilet, has come as big relief.

"I would not like to compare my new home with the old one anymore. After fleeing my village we lived on pavements and dirty slums at Mullapara in West Tripura for years. This is a big relief for my family," Rabin, who works as a daily wager, said.

The memories of ethnic tension still haunt some of the displaced people, who do not wish to return to their village any longer.

Rajesh Das, who also hailed from Jampuijala village, once considered as the hub for vegetable cultivation, feels visiting his village might lead to more trouble.

"No one is interested in going back. Who knows, going back may spark off another ethnic tension there. We want to settle down peacefully on the land provided to us by the government," he said.

The new inhabitants of South Narayanpura village, however, complained that the area lacks electricity and drinking water supply.

"We manage to set up a hand pump at the village as the nearest water supply point is one kilometre away from this village," said Rajesh Das.

One of the villagers said on the condition of anonymity that the people in the colony use hook lines from a high tension power line to electrify homes.

"Local BJP MLA Dilip Das visited our colony a month ago and promised to arrange for water supply and power," he said.

BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik, when asked about the living conditions of the colonies, said his party will take steps to ensure proper rehabilitation.

"We have launched many movements in the past (during Left rule) for the rehabilitation of the homeless. We are trying to provide them amenities so that they can lead a normal life," Bhowmik added.

Veteran CPI(M) leader and former deputy speaker Pabitra Kar said the erstwhile Left Front government had always been sympathetic to the problems faced by the displaced people.

"Our government had allotted lands to several families at Sipahijala and West Tripura. We had also planned a scheme to rehabilitate the displaced members, but that scheme could not be implemented as the Election Commission had announced assembly polls for February," he added.

The BJP-IPFT combine government came to power in March 9, ending the 25-year of CPI(M)-led Left Front rule in Tripura.PTI

Agartala, Aug 17: The Tripura government has declared a holiday today as a mark of respect to the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who died in New Delhi yesterday.

A notification, issued here last night, said all government offices and educational institutes and banks run by the state government would remain closed today.

The state government also declared state mourning for seven days with effect from yesterday. Throughout the mourning period the national flag will fly at half mast, it said.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb flew to New Delhi and paid floral tribute to the late leader yesterday.

In a message Deb said, "we lost a great statesman of the country. His demise is an irreparable loss to the country."

Vajpayee died at the age of 93 at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi. (PTI)

Agartala, July 27: An app based transport service will soon be launched in Tripura, state Transport Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said.

Under the new service, auto rickshaws and cabs can be booked, availed and paid via mobile applications, Singha Roy told reporters yesterday.

The service will help the people during the coming Durga Puja season, he said.

Six service providers had expressed interest in launching the service, but the state has chosen 'Jugnoo', which caters to several other states.

The service will be available in Agartala, Bishalgarh in Sipahijala and Udaipur in Gomati districts, the minister said.

He said other service providers might be roped in later to cover other routes.

Joint Transport Commissioner Sabyasachi Singh said 'Jugnoo', formed by a handful of IITians in 2014, runs app based auto and cab services in big cities including Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh, besides Singapore. (PTI)

Aizawl, Jul 27: The Election Commission of India has accepted the suggestion of the Mizoram government that electoral roll revision for Bru community, lodged in the six relief camps in Tripura, would be conducted only after they return to Mizoram, a senior state official today said.

Principal Secretary of Home Department, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said that the Election Commission had earlier instructed the state election department to undertake revision of voters' lists in the Bru relief camps which was objected by the state government.

The state government had suggested to the Commission that the revision of electoral rolls should be taken up after the Brus return to Mizoram from Tripura, Chuaungo said.

Civil societies have all along been objecting the conduct of revision of voters' lists and exercise of franchise by Bru displaced people in the relief camps outside the state.

He said that the repatriation of Brus lodged in the six relief camps is scheduled to commence from August 14 and would be completed by September 10 and preparations were in full swing in the three districts where the repatriated Brus were proposed to be resettled.

At least 32,876 Brus belonging to 5,407 families would be resettled in 48 villages in Mamit district, 10 villages in Kolasib district and four villages in Lunglei district.

The state government would go ahead with the road map for Bru repatriation approved by the Centre and following the agreement inked between the centre, Mizoram and Tripura state governments and the Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) apex body of the Bru refugees in the relief camps on July two, even if the inmates are not willing to return to Mizoram, he said.

The Centre had convened a meeting of chief ministers of Mizoram and Tripura on July two in which it was agreed that repatriation of all the 32,876 Brus belonging to 5,407 families lodged in the six relief camps should be completed by September 30.

The Centre would deposit Rs 4 lakh in the bank account of each repatriated family which could be withdrawn after three years and a housing assistance to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh would be disbursed to each family.

Each family would also be provided with monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 for two years and free ration for the same period.

Agartala, Jul 6 : Nine persons, including prime accused Sunil Mohan Tripura, have been arrested in connection with the lynching of a man for campaigning against rumour-mongering on child-lifting in Tripura, the police said today.

While Sunil Mohan was arrested yesterday from Sabroom in south Tripura district, another accused Hiren Tripura was held from the student hostel of Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar College of Belonia sub-division of the same district early today, IG (Law and Order) K V Sreejesh told PTI.

"We have got the video footage of the killing of Sukanta Chakraborty. He was held on the basis of the footage and complaints. We have found from the footage that all the accused were involved in the killing," he said.

Seven persons have been arrested earlier.

Four police personnel including one Assistant Sub-inspector of police and two personnel of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) have already been suspended in this connection.



Sukanta Chakraborty (33), a resident of the Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura district, was lynched by a mob on June 28 last, when he was returning from Kalacherra village after campaigning against the child lifting scare in the state.

He was hired by the state Information and culture department.

A woman and a hawker were also beaten to death on the suspicion of being child-lifters in separate incidents in the state on the same day.PTI

New Delhi, Jul 2: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in large parts of India, including several places in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Gujarat, over the next few days till Friday, the India Meteorological Department said today.

The warning comes after the IMD said last week that the monsoon had covered the entire country, 17 days ahead of its normal onset date.

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rains at a few places, with extremely heavy rains at isolated places, are very likely over Uttarakhand and east Uttar Pradesh.

Heavy to very heavy rains, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, are very likely today over sub- Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Assam and Meghalaya, the weather office said in a statement.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also very likely today at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh.

Heavy rains at isolated places are also expected today over north Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Konkan and Goa, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and coastal Karnataka.

For tomorrow, the IMD said heavy to very heavy rains, with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, are likely over Assam and Meghalaya.

Heavy to very heavy rain is also expected for tomorrow at isolated places over east Uttar Pradesh, sub- Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar.

Heavy rains at isolated places are expected tomorrow over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, north Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan and Goa, Rayalaseema, coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, it said.

The IMD, in its warning for Wednesday, said heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya and Konkan and Goa.

It said heavy rains are also expected on Wednesday at isolated places over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Gujarat region, central Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka.

For Thursday, it predicted that heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Konkan and Goa, and coastal Karnataka.

Heavy rains are also expected on Thursday at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya, Gujarat region, central Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka and Kerala.

On Friday, heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Odisha, Konkan and Goa, and coastal Karnataka.

Heavy rains are also expected at isolated places over Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Gujarat region, central Maharashtra, Marathawada, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, interior Karnataka and Kerala on Friday.

The four-month monsoon season normally begins from June 1 and ends on September 30.

This year, the monsoon touched Kerala on May 29, three days ahead of its normal onset date of June 1. It battered the western coast in the first half of June. (PTI)

Agartala, Jun 18 :  The overall flood situation in Tripura has improved with water level in all major rivers flowing below the danger level, officials said.

"Work for the distribution of relief materials, food and medicines is in full swing. We are keeping a close watch on the situation," D Darlong, district Magistrate of Unakoti which is the worst-affected, said over phone from Kailashahar.

Over 72,000 people are still staying in relief camps in Unakoti district, he said.

Chief Public Relations Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway, P J Sharma said train services have been restored in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section but some portions of railway track are still under flood water in between Badarpur-Silchar and Manu-Ambassa-Agartala affecting passenger train services.

The Badarpur-Silchar section in Assam and Manu-Ambassa-Agartala section in Tripura remained suspended since Jun 13 due to landslips at several locations, he said.

Three pairs of passenger trains - Agartala-Silchar, Silchar-Dharmanagar and Agartala-Dharmanagar - could not run in the two sections because of the landslips caused by flood, Sharma said.

"Efforts are on to restart the train services as early as possible," he said.

As part of a contingency arrangement, one pair of special passenger train will run from Agartala to Badarpur today, Sharma said.

Agartala, Jun 6: President Ramnath Kovind would come to Tripura tomorrow for a two-day visit during which he would declare the 'Queen' variety of pineapple as the state fruit, officials said here today.
The declaration of state fruit would be made at a civic reception organised by the state government in honour of the President tomorrow evening.
Kovind would land at the Agartala airport earlier in the day and leave for Udaipur, the headquarters of Gomati district 55 km from here, in a helicopter.
He would inaugurate a 6 km long road from Udaipur town to Tripurasundari temple, considered one of the 51 Shaktipiths of the country, officials said.
The President would also visit the temple and offer Puja there before returning to the Rajbhavan here. The civic reception would be held at 6 pm.
Kovind would return to Delhi the next morning, officials said. (PTI)

Agartala, May 15 : Tripura deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma today refuted the allegation of opposition CPI (M) and Congress against the state government regarding imposition of ban on new job.

Talking to newspersons, Dev Varma said the rule of governance has collapsed in 25 yrs rule of CPI (M) and there were massive irregularities in the process of appointment and the employment policy, which compelled the new government to make a temporary halt in new job.

“The CPI (M) is the master of misleading baseless campaign to trigger chaos and this is also no different. The BJP-IPFT government assumed office only two months ago and now the government is reviewing the policies of the last government including employment and public utility schemes and until we understand the flaws we will not take any action,” Dev Varma argued.

He said that the entire employment policy of previous government and the beneficiaries of the social security schemes were completely politically motivated and thus did not maintain the rules and there was lack of transparency. Because of flaws, the high court and Supreme Court had to intervene in most of the issues of governances and 10,323 posts of teachers were cancelled only because of the administrative faults of the left front government. This government will not go into such illegal and corrupt ways that take little time to start up.

“Our draft employment policy is ready and now under the security of legal issues and sent to different levels for their opinion to make it transparent, constitutional and people oriented. Also the government is framed well defined transfer policy for the public servant to ensure good governance. We are expecting soon the cabinet will approve those policies of the government and very shortly the recruitment process will be started,” Dev Varma stated.

He alleged that Left Front government created huge problems in the governance and converted the whole system into a den of corruption – however, the present government is optimistic that it would be able to fulfill its pre-poll promises and to bring best public policies for development of the state without any political biasness.

Understanding the whole system of governance, which was misused by CPI (M) and formulating proper action plan needs at least six months time for any peoples’ government. The BJP-IPFT government is doing the exercise to understand and rectify the faults in the system of previous government. Obviously, the change in governance and development will be visible at least after six months, Dev Varma added.UNI

Agartala, May 12: With the protest from Tripura Congress against the decision of the state government decision to keep payment of all allowances meant for the poorest in abeyance and suspend all works on employment-related schemes MGNREGA, BJP today hit back suggesting the opposition to stop disruption without going deep into the problem.
BJP Vice President Subal Bhowmik said that the last CPI (M) government did not comply with the directives of the central government set for MGNREGA scheme. 
Tripura got negative score in 25 -points performance scale of MGNREGA in last year and unfortunately because of bad governance of leftist the state scored only 23.
“Both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister tried hard to convince the central government that it was not the fault of the job card holders but stopping fund of MGNREGA is actually affecting the livelihood of those section on the contrary, the persons who did the mistake are safe. They committed to take action against all the accused officials and political bosses and got the fund release from the ministry,” Bhowmik said.
He also pointed out that when new government took charge the state finance was deficit by Rs 11000 Cr and number of unemployed overshoot 7.5 lakh. There was institutional form of corruption during the Left Front government that prevented normal flow of fund in Tripura, which is actually affecting the development process of the state.
“No allowance has been withdrawn and all of them will start being paid from June after an extensive ongoing review being done by the state government; according to feedback received by the state government many people who do not qualify for the allowances are being paid the same while many who deserve such allowances continue to be deprived; this was done by the previous Left Front government in partisan interest; we do not believe in depriving anybody but we do want that really eligible and deserving people have access to these benefits given from public money,” he said.
In regard to the eviction notices served on dwellers on the banks of River Howrah, Bhowmik said that many dwellers on the river banks have their household in safe areas but they continue to encroach and occupy government land.
All those who have lands and homes in other safe areas will be evicted but we have requested the state government to arrange for alternative rehabilitation for the really landless and homeless people; nobody will be inconvenienced by this as the government is only trying to save the Agartala from flooding and restore the environment, he added.
The Congress yesterday had blockade national highway at Agartala demanding immediate resumption of the payments of all social pensions and schemes. Tripura PCC president Birjit Sinha alleged that an unprecedented situation of crisis has emerged as a result of the state government’s thoughtless decision and they demanded a roll-back of the decision immediately. 
“The payment of allowances for disadvantaged people, including old age pension, allowance for widows, women deserted by husbands, physically handicapped people and others have all been suspended in the name of a review ;the government is free to review the names and identities of beneficiaries but why should payment should be suspended? This is a foolish, thoughtless and anti-people decision; besides, a severe crisis has been created by the government’s decision,” Sinha said.
Criticising the temporary stay on recruitment he said that fresh recruitment could be stopped temporarily but why the blanket ban. It is amazing that recruitment has been frozen but one after another OSDs are being appointed by the administration and in one case a retired IAS officer B K Chibbar has recently been appointed on a fat monthly salary but this man was never engaged in developmental administration but worked in other posts; how can he advise the chief minister on development. UNI
