Chandigarh, Mar 23 :  Hours after announcing a curfew in Punjab to combat coronavirus, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday said he was forced to take the extreme measure in the "larger interest" of the state.

Appealing to the people to voluntarily adhere to the curfew imposed to tackle the prevailing "war-like situation", Singh also warned of strict action against the violators.

The Punjab government on Monday clamped a curfew to fight coronavirus, making it the first state to take the drastic measure after finding that many people were ignoring the state-wide lockdown ordered by it.

In a video message addressing the people of Punjab, the chief minister said he was forced to take the stringent step "in the larger interest of the state, and in the interest of all of you", as he had received reports that people were moving around normally in towns, mohallas and cities defying the lockdown that took into effect on Monday morning.

He appealed to the people for their cooperation and said the violation of the lockdown by them was "unacceptable" and it was the responsibility of his government, and his duty as its head, to "save Punjab".

Making it clear that the curfew would be continuous, spanning 24 hours a day, the chief minister, in a statement here, said only those with emergent needs would be allowed to go out, after taking due permission from their respective Deputy Commissioners. The mobile numbers of DCs would be shared with the public.

Difficult decisions need to be taken in difficult times, Singh said, adding it had become necessary to impose and enforce curfew to "survive these tough times".

"Please listen to me, and bear with me," he appealed to the people, emphasising that "We must work shoulder to shoulder to fend off the crisis we are all facing".

"We must save our state, our people; we have children, families," the chief minister said, adding that as a small state, it was all the more reason for Punjab to take all possible steps "to preserve our population and ensure that everyone lives happily for years to come."

Punjab reported 21 positive coronavirus cases till Monday morning.

Chandigarh, Aug 23: The Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, today observed one minute of silence as a mark of respect to veteran journalist and noted

writer Kuldip Nayar (95), who passed away in Delhi.

The cabinet described Nayar as a multifaceted personality, who served in different capacities as a diplomat and parliamentarian, an official release said here.

Besides being a fine human being, he was an erudite author, who penned several articles on a wide spectrum of Indian and international topics, including politics and current affairs, in esteemed columns of leading newspapers and magazines, the cabinet noted.

Recalling his remarkable services as a son of Punjab, the cabinet said Nayar would be remembered by one and all for his efforts in strengthening Indo-Pak ties, besides fostering love, peace, brotherhood and amity between the people of both nations.

The cabinet shared its heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family, relations and friends, the release said.

Nayar, a fierce proponent of press freedom and civil liberties, died in the early hours of the day at the Escorts hospital in Delhi. He was suffering from pneumonia and was admitted to the hospital five days back. (PTI)

Chandigarh, Jul 3: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has announced that he would personally bear the entire expenses of the education of Science Deep Singh, who is engaged in creating awareness among masses about the ill effects of drugs.

Science Deep Singh, a resident of Chakk Sher Wala in Muktsar, lost both his father and grandfather to drugs, which prompted him to do something positive for the society especially to wean away the youth from the menace of drugs, a spokesperson said.

The youth, escorted by Muktsar SSP Sushil Kumar, called on the chief minister here at the CMO last evening, the spokesman said.

Lauding the efforts made by Science Deep, who has been sensitising drug addicts and their families by organising plays, skits and singing competitions in the villages of Muktsar and other nearby districts, the chief minister impressed upon the other youngsters to emulate him in his mission to contain the drug menace in his own humble way.

Amarinder Singh announced that he would personally bear all the expenses of Science Deep's education.

The chief minister also announced that the state government would upgrade the tailoring skills of his mother Simranjit Kaur to enable her to be gainfully employed.

He ordered the deputy commissioner concerned to upgrade the skills of Science Deep Singh's elder brother, Karamjit Singh, so that he could also be given a suitable job to earn livelihood with dignity. (PTI)

Punjab govt cleared Rs 835 lakhs relief to kin in suicide cases of farmers, farm labourers

 Chandigarh, Apr 25 : Fast-tracking the process of providing relief to the families of farmers and farm labourers who have committed suicide, the Capt Amarinder Singh government has approved financial assistance to the tune of Rs 835 lakhs in 296 cases of suicide since taking over the reins of Punjab.
This is the highest ever amount of relief given to the affected families in such cases since the scheme was launched in 2015.
Stating this here on Wednesday, an official spokesperson said the relief had been sanctioned by the State Level Committee (SLC) set up for the purpose in nine meetings since April last year.
Giving details, he said the Chief Minister had directed early clearance of the backlog in such cases by the SLC for rendering financial assistance to the kin of farmer and farm labourers affected by suicides.
All the Deputy Commissioners, who are also the heads of District Level Committees, had been directed to scrutinize the cases falling under their jurisdiction on a monthly basis. They had further been asked to forward the cases for to the SLC for approval by the 10th of every month, the spokesperson said.
Among the cases cleared by the SLC are 199 that date back to the period between 2013 to 2016. These include 11 cases of 2013, 31 of 2014, 29 of 2015, 128 of 2016 and 80 cases of 2017.
The approved cases include 80 cases from Sangrur, 58 cases from Mansa, 44 from Barnala, 24 from Bathinda, 13 from Tarn Taran, 9 from Amritsar, 07 cases each from Faridkot and Fatehgarh Sahib, 06 from Fazilka, 08 from Sri Muktsar Sahib, 04 cases from Ferozepur, and 1case each from Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and SBS Nagar, 11 cases from Ludhiana, 02 from Patiala and 03 from Rupnagar.
The spokesperson said the Chief Minister’s directions in this regard were being followed in letter and spirit, and monthly meeting was being held at District and State levels to ensure speedy disbursal of financial assistance to the kin of farmers and farm labourers who had ended their lives in desperation on account of their unmanageable debt burdens.
Pointing out that his government had already launched a debt waiver scheme for the small and marginal farmers, and had also assured of similar relief to the farm labourers in subsequent phases, Capt Amarinder Singh appealed to the farmers and farm labourers not to resort to such desperate measures as suicide. UNI
