Bengaluru, Jul 11 :  With his government fighting for survival following the resignation of 16 Congress-JD(S) MLAs, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy sought to know on Thursday why should he step down from the post.

"Why should I resign? What is the necessity for me to resign now?," Kumaraswamy shot back to reporters here, amidst the speculation that he could put in his papers in the wake of the crisis that has pushed his coalition government to the brink of collapse.

He recalled that in 2009-10, 18 MLAs, including some ministers, had "opposed" the then chief minister BS Yeddyurappa of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but he had not resigned.

The chief minister held discussions with senior Congress leaders on Thursday, after the coalition government headed by him suffered a fresh jolt with two more Congress legislators resigning on Wednesday, talking the tally of MLAs who have put in their papers to 16.

The Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition faces the threat of losing its majority in the Assembly if the resignations are accepted as its current tally is 116 in the 224 member House.

Congress MLAs MTB Nagaraj and K Sudhakar submitted their resignations to Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar at his chamber in Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat, on Wednesday.

The Karnataka unit of the BJP, led by its chief Yeddyurappa, staged a protest at the Vidhan Soudha on Wednesday demanding the resignation of Kumaraswamy, who they claimed had lost majority in the House.

Yeddyurappa and other BJP leaders also petitioned the governor in this connection.

Of the 16 MLAs who have resigned, 13 are from the Congress and three from the JD(S). The coalition's strength in the House is 116 (Congress 78, JD(S) 37 and BSP one), besides the speaker.

With the support of the two independents, who resigned from the ministry on Monday, the opposition BJP has 107 MLAs in the 224-member House, where the halfway mark is 113.

If the resignations of the 16 MLAs are accepted, the ruling coalition's tally will be reduced to 100.

Kalburgi (K'taka), Sep 17 :  Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Monday announced the coalition government's decision to cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2 per litre.


The announcement comes in the wake of political pressure building against Kumaraswamy after Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal governments reduced fuel prices.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has cut taxes on fuel by Rs 2 and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by Re 1.

"Today, this coalition government has decided to reduce both petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2 per litre," Kumaraswamy, who heads a JD(S)-Congress government, said while addressing an event here.

Fuel prices have been climbing since August 16.

The rising fuel prices have created a political storm with the Opposition launching a scathing attack against the Narendra Modi government, which has cited international factors for it.

Fuel prices are the steepest in Maharashtra and the lowest in Andaman and Nicobar.PTI

New Delhi, Aug 30: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today met Congress President Rahul Gandhi here and urged him to take early decision on cabinet expansion of the coalition government.

The chief minister also said that the JD(S)-Congress coalition government is secure under the leadership of senior Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah.

In a brief meeting with the Gandhi at his residence, Kumaraswamy also apprised him about the 100 day performance of the coalition government.

"In the meeting, I have requested Congress President to take early decision on expansion of the cabinet and appointment of corporation Boards chairman," Kumaraswamy told reporters after the meeting.

At present, the cabinet comprises 16 Congress and 10 JD(S) members, including chief minister and deputy chief minister, and as per rule four more can be added, one from JD(S) and three from Congress.

Kumaraswamy's discussions with Gandhi also comes on the eve of the JD(S)-Congress Coordination Committee meeting scheduled tomorrow to iron out differences in the alliance that has arisen after Siddaramaiah's remarks about becoming the state chief minister.

Asked about the remarks, he said: "He (Siddaramaiah) is a leader. If he expresses desire to become CM, what's wrong in that."

"The coalition government is secure under the leadership of Siddarmaiah. Siddaramaiah is necessary for the coalition government to run safety," Kumaraswamy said.

Already, Siddarmaiah has given clarification that he would become the chief minister if people desire in the next election, the CM said.

"Despande (senior Congress leader) too may have desire to become chief minister. There is no no need to interpret and understand it in a different way," he added.

R V Despande is a Revenue Minister in the coalition government in Karnataka.

Asserting that the coalition government was successful in completing 100 days in the state, the chief minister said: "People in the state have various expectations. My first goal is to fulfill their expectations in the coming days."

The 100 days of honeymoon period is over and the government will start implementing the blue print in the coming days, he added.

The chief minister further said that the government was successful in taking officers into confidence. They have to work considering the wave length of the coalition government, he added.

Already, the government has announced farm loan waiver and given certain directions to officials to implement the budget proposals, he stressed.

Kumaraswamy is also scheduled to meet the President Ramnath Kovind and Home Minister Rajnath Singh to submit proposal seeking relief to flood hit Kodagu in the state. (PTI)

Bengaluru, Jul 5: In a big relief to the farm sector, Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today announced a mega Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme in the maiden budget of the Congress-JDS coalition government.

Unveiling the budget proposals in the Assembly, Kumaraswamy, who also holds the finance portfolio, said he has limited the loan amount to Rs 2 lakh, as it was "not right" to waiver higher value crop loan.

"Due to this crop loan waiver scheme, farmers will get the benefit of Rs 34,000 crore," Kumaraswamy said, seeking to fulfil a major electoral promise made by the JDS in its manifesto for the recently held assembly polls in the state.

With the waiver scheme imposing a huge burden on the exchequer, he also announced proposals to mop up additional resources, including increase in the rate of tax on petrol by Rs 1.14 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.12 per litre.

He also proposed a hike in the additional excise duty on Indian-made liquor by 4 per cent across the board on all 18 slabs.

Kumaraswamy recalled his assurance to waive all types of crop loans of farmers taken for agricultural activities within 24 hours of formation of a full-fledged government.

"However, even though the people of the state have not blessed a single party government, I have been provided with a good opportunity to form a coalition government and to work as chief minister of that coalition," he said.

Kumaraswamy said he had decided to waive all defaulted crop loans of the farmers made up to December 31, 2017 in the first stage.

Besides this, it has been decided to credit the repaid loan amount or Rs 25,000, whichever is less, to each of the farmers account, to help farmers who had repaid the loan within time, the chief minister said.

The families of the government officials and officials of the cooperative sector, farmers who have paid income-tax for the past three years and other ineligible farm loan recipients will be outside the purview of the loan waiver scheme. (PTI)

Bengaluru, June 23 : Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today accused the Centre of having taken a "unilateral" decision in forming the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), hurting the state's interests.

"We had given certain suggestions about the formation of the panel, but the Centre took a unilateral decision," he told reporters here, a day after the Centre notified the formation of the CWRC.

Karnataka has not nominated its representative to the committee, which has members from other riparian states --Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.

"The interests of the state have been hurt with the formation of the panel. Our (state's) rights have been taken away," Kumaraswamy said.

Kumaraswamy said he would take the suggestion of the Advocate General to decide the future course of action and also meet Union Water Resource Minister Nitin Gadkari and "make our submission."

He said Karnataka had supported the formation of Cauvery Scheme as directed by the Supreme Court, but there are some loopholes in it.

"The Centre did not take our stand into consideration. I have once again written letter to the Centre to reconsider its decision of forming the panel," he said.

He emphasised that Karnataka never violated any rule.

"Our state has never misused law. We always respectedthe federal structure. It is our people who faced numerous challenges. Our respect (for the federal structure) should not be perceived as our weakness," said Kumaraswamy.

After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New Delhi on June 18, Kumaraswamy had said that he had raised certain "technical objections" relating to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and CWRC.

In a June 1 gazette notification, the Water Resources Ministry said it has framed a scheme constituting the CWMA and CWRC to give effect to the decision of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as modified by the Supreme Court order.

Karnataka has been opposing any move to form CWMA and had instead suggested formation of Cauvery Decision Implementation Committee.

Kumaraswamy had also written to Modi,seeking redressal of issues related to cropping pattern before operatingthe CWMA and CWRC.   PTI
