Kolkata, Apr 15 :  Unhappy over the way the lockdown is being enforced in West Bengal, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar Wednesday said police and civil officials not following protocol be shown the door and deployment of central paramilitary forces be considered, drawing a sharp reaction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who advised Raj Bhavan to eschew politics in times of crisis.

"Lockdown protocol has to be thoroughly implemented to ward off #coronavirus. Police and administration @MamataOfficial failing to effect 100% #SocialDistancing or curbing religious congregations be shown door," Dhankhar tweeted.

"Lockdown must succeed-examine central para forces requisitioning!" the governor added.

The governor's remarks did not go down well with the chief minister, who smelt politics in them.

Why do we need paramilitary forces? There have been instances where military personnel themselves have been infected with the virus. Some people are trying to fish in troubled waters. I would urge everybody this is not the time for politics. This is a crisis situation, Banerjee said, but did not name the governor.

The Union Home Ministry had also recently flagged "gradual dilution" of the lockdown in some parts of the state.

Most of these localities are minority-dominated, and the state BJP unit has repeatedly alleged that lockdown was not being properly enforced in these areas.

The home ministry also said despite the Centre issuing orders from time to time under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, these were not being followed.

Reacting to the Centre's letter, Banerjee had said the Union government was only interested in "extra vigilance in some specific areas".

"We are not fighting any communal virus, we are fighting a disease spreading through human contact. Wherever we find any problem, steps will be taken to ensure that the lockdown is imposed there, but that doesn't mean shops would remain closed... We are keeping a close watch," she had said.

Dhankhar has been at loggerheads with the state government over a host of issues ever since taking office in July last year.

Kolkata, Mar 25 :  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday sought a Rs 1,500 crore package from the Centre to support the state government's efforts to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking to reporters through video-conference from the state secretariat, Banerjee said the Centre should provide a special package as the state is finding it difficult to do "everything" with its "limited resources".

"We had made the same request at the all-party meeting two days back. The Centre should announce a special financial package for the state in the current situation," she said.

The chief minister said that while the state has created a Rs 200-crore fund, it is inadequate to procure all necessary equipment such as ventilators.

Banerjee said the Centre should work out special economic packages for all the states affected by the pandemic.

She also appealed to the corporates, industrialists and other organisations in the state to donate to the relief fund to effectively tackle the disease.

Responding to a question, she said the state government has the right to decide on certain provisions of the National Disaster Management Act and a call will be taken on whether some of them can be relaxed after reviewing the situation on March 31.

The Act has been invoked by the Centre without consulting the states "but we will later on decide which provision should be enforced and which not", Banerjee said.

She said people engaged by online platforms for delivery of food items, vegetable vendors and those in other essential services should not be stopped by police during the lockdown.

Farmers working in fields usually maintain distance between each other and there is no reason they should not be allowed to work, the chief minister said.

If required, passes should be issued to people employed for home delivery services, she said.

Banerjee warned of action if policemen were found stopping people working in essential services, while praising the forces for its overall role in enforcing the lockdown.

"Some policemen at the lower level, civic volunteers, should also be sensitised by their superiors that those involved in essential services, like vegetable vendors, online food delivery boys, farmers should not be stopped," she said.

"Social distancing doesn't mean social isolation," the chief minister said.

She also warned of stern action if doctors, nurses and health workers are harassed by their neighbours.

Banerjee said that if someone runs out of food during the lockdown, the person should get in touch with the respective Block Development Officer.

She said there is no need to panic as the state has enough food grain in stock.

The government will provide one month's ration of rice to everyone and also give social pension to the poor so that no one faces the pinch of the lockdown, she said.

"Neighbourhood grocery stores will remain open and they will be able to source commodities from nearby markets that will function for a stipulated time," she said.

The chief minister urged people to maintain distance while buying essential items from ration shops or grocery stores.

She also said that a control room to monitor the emerging situation will work 24x7 in three shifts, having a nodal officer in each shift.

Banerjee said the task force formed by the state government is keeping a close tab on the entire situation, including the availability of essentials in the market.

Kolkata, Mar 24 :  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday extended the ongoing lockdown in force in Kolkata and other urban areas of West Bengal to the entire state till March 31 to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

"After assessing the situation, it has been decided that the ongoing lockdown will be extended to the entire state from 5 pm today," Banerjee told a press conference.

The lockdown in Kolkata and several urban agglomerations had begun on Monday and was scheduled to continue till March 27 midnight.

Kolkata, Jan 27 :  The West Bengal Assembly Monday passed a resolution against CAA brought by the state government demanding that the contentious citizenship law be repealed forthwith and NPR and the proposed NRC be withdrawn.

Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Citizenship Amendment Act is "against the Constitution and humanity".

"We want this law to be repealed immediately. We want NPR to be also repealed," Banerjee said.

The resolution was supported by both the opposition parties Congress and the CPI(M) led Left Front.

The BJP legislature party opposed the resolution and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the CAA to help refugees get their citizenship of the country.

Kerala, Rajasthan and Punjab too have passed resolutions against the new citizenship law.

The amended citizenship law has emerged as the latest flashpoint in the West Bengal with TMC opposing the contentious legislation tooth and nail and BJP pressing for its implementation.

The state assembly had earlier passed a resolution against NRC in September 2019. The BJP had naturally not supported it.
Dhawan's NZ tour in doubt after fresh shoulder injury

Bengaluru, Jan 19 :  Senior India opener Shikhar Dhawan's tryst with injuries continued as he did not come out to bat after hurting his left shoulder during the third ODI against Australia here on Sunday.

After being taken for an X-ray, Dhawan was seen with his left arm in sling, putting under doubt his participation in the New Zealand tour, starting January 24 with a T20 match in Auckland.

The team is set to leave for New Zealand on Monday morning.

Dhawan was taken off the field in the fifth over of the game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He had dived to save an Aaron Finch shot in the cover region, hurting his shoulder.

He then walked out and was replaced by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on the field.

The 34-year-old Dhawan had not taken the field for the entire duration of the Australian innings in the second ODI after a Pat Cummins bouncer hit him on the rib cage while batting.

Dhawan had suffered a thumb fracture during the World Cup in Australia and after returning to the side he sustained a knee injury during the Mushtaq Ali trophy, requiring 27 stitches.

Kolkata, Jan 17 :  Citing "preoccupations" West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not attend an all- party meeting called by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday, to discuss issues pertaining to two bills, a Raj Bhavan official said here.

The Chief Minister's Office informed the Governor's Secretariat that on account of preoccupations on Friday, it will not be possible for Banerjee to attend the meeting, the Raj Bhavan said in a statement on Thursday.

Dhankhar has been engaged in a face-off with Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress, over a host of issues since assuming charge as the governor of the state.

The meeting was called by the governor to discuss two bills passed by the Assembly, which are awaiting his assent.

The statement said that "on account of there being no inputs from the state government and the state Legislative Assembly in spite of repeated efforts" with regard to the pendency of 'The West Bengal (Prevention of Lynching) Bill, 2019 and 'West Bengal State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Bill, 2019', the meeting had been convened by the governor.

"The Governor has urged the Chief Minister to give priority to this matter and spare time at the earliest" for a meeting on these issues," it said.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Abdul Mannan, and Left Front Legislature Party leader Sujan Chakraborty have requested that the meeting be held on January 21, the statement said, adding that it will be scheduled on that date.

The Raj Bhavan has also been informed that the Leader of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, Rohit Sharma, is currently bedridden, it said.

Kolkata, Aug 7  :  Jadavpur University has decided to provide accomodation to about 12 new admissions from Kashmir valley in its hostel immediately on a priority basis, Registrar Snehamanju Basu said Wednesday.

The decision has been taken post the abrogation of Article 370 and the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019.

A university official said the move was prompted by a message from the West Bengal government on Tuesday to see that Kashmiri students do not face any hardships, financial or otherwise as their families may not be in a position to help them.

Telecom links in the Kashmir valley remains snapped due to the communication shutdown by the authorities to deter protests over the decision that seeks to redraw the map and future of the region, which has been at the centre of a protracted militancy movement.

Normally it takes one and half months for a first year student to get a university hostel accomodation.

Basu step was taken so that the students of the premier institute from Jammu and Kashmir do not face any questions if they put up as paying guests in private residences outside the university campus.

To a question, Basu said the university has not taken any decision on second or final year Kashmiri students living in rented or PG accomodation.

"However, if any senior Kashmiri student makes any request about shifting from PG to hostel accomodation, we will consider it," he said.

The Arts Faculty Students Union (AFSU) of the varsity, a Left-controlled union, has opened a helpline to come to the aid of Kashmiri students studying in the institution.

"We have put up the helpline number at the admission counter. Any Kashmiri student needing help can also approach us personally at the union office," an AFSU spokesman said.

The Vice-chancellor of state-run Rabindra Bharati University, Sabyasachi Basu Roy Choudhury said he has no official information about any Kashmiri student having enrolled in the university. "However, if there is confirmation about the presence of any Kashmiri student the institution will take all necessary measures to ensure his safety."

Authorities of Visva-Bharati, a central university, could not tell immediately if there is any Kashmiri student in the institute.

Presidency University Registrar Debajyoti Konar said the institute does not have any Kashmiri student.

An IIT Kharagpur source said that the admission formalities of all first year students have been completed and the semester has begun but there is no update regarding any Kashmiri so far.

St Xavier's University and College in the city too does not have any student form Kashmir, a source in the institution said.                                                       [Agencies]

Bengaluru, Jul 11 :  With his government fighting for survival following the resignation of 16 Congress-JD(S) MLAs, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy sought to know on Thursday why should he step down from the post.

"Why should I resign? What is the necessity for me to resign now?," Kumaraswamy shot back to reporters here, amidst the speculation that he could put in his papers in the wake of the crisis that has pushed his coalition government to the brink of collapse.

He recalled that in 2009-10, 18 MLAs, including some ministers, had "opposed" the then chief minister BS Yeddyurappa of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but he had not resigned.

The chief minister held discussions with senior Congress leaders on Thursday, after the coalition government headed by him suffered a fresh jolt with two more Congress legislators resigning on Wednesday, talking the tally of MLAs who have put in their papers to 16.

The Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition faces the threat of losing its majority in the Assembly if the resignations are accepted as its current tally is 116 in the 224 member House.

Congress MLAs MTB Nagaraj and K Sudhakar submitted their resignations to Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar at his chamber in Vidhana Soudha, the state secretariat, on Wednesday.

The Karnataka unit of the BJP, led by its chief Yeddyurappa, staged a protest at the Vidhan Soudha on Wednesday demanding the resignation of Kumaraswamy, who they claimed had lost majority in the House.

Yeddyurappa and other BJP leaders also petitioned the governor in this connection.

Of the 16 MLAs who have resigned, 13 are from the Congress and three from the JD(S). The coalition's strength in the House is 116 (Congress 78, JD(S) 37 and BSP one), besides the speaker.

With the support of the two independents, who resigned from the ministry on Monday, the opposition BJP has 107 MLAs in the 224-member House, where the halfway mark is 113.

If the resignations of the 16 MLAs are accepted, the ruling coalition's tally will be reduced to 100.

New Delhi, Jun 25 :  A BJP delegation, led by Lok Sabha member SS Ahluwalia, on Tuesday submitted its report to party chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on violence in trouble-torn Bhatpara area of West Bengal, and alleged that the local police was acting in a "partisan" manner.

The team, which also included MPs Satyapal Singh and BD Ram, both retired police officers, had visited Bhatpara on Saturday.

Two people were killed and 11 others injured in clashes in the town in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday.

After submitting the report to Shah, Ahluwalia questioned the police action during the violence between two groups belonging to different communities.

The police fired gun shots at one group, while it only did lathicharge on the other, the former Union Minister alleged.

The delegation, which spoke to a cross-section of people in Bhatpara, claimed that people have lost trust in police.

"People are unable to do their work there as they have lost trust in police. Police either act as mute spectator or are partisan," Ahluwalia told reporters here.

He also said that police tried to prevent the delegation from going to the area and stopped them at the airport as Section 144 of CrPC was imposed.

Ahluwalia said that in the report they have suggested giving financial help to those affected by violence and ensuring education for the children.                       [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 24  :   The BJP on Monday demonstrated outside the offices of superintendents of police in various parts of West Bengal to protest against the "worsening law and order situation" of the state.

"The TMC government is trying to turn Bengal into a police state. The police have become trigger happy. They are opening fire at the drop of a hat and killing BJP workers. For chanting Jai Shri Ram, BJP workers are being killed," senior BJP leader Saynatan Basu alleged.

Scuffle broke out between BJP activists and police personnel in various districts when the party workers broke cordon and marched towards the SP's offices.

Hundreds of BJP activists in various parts of the state were detained, police said.

Since the saffron party won 18 of the 42 seats in the state, post-poll clashes in several areas and a number of people were killed.

Buoyed by major gains in Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal, the BJP leadership is aiming at more than two-third majority in the assembly elections due in 2021 and also for early polls in the state.

The party's vote share zoomed to 40.25 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls of 2019 from 17 per cent in 2014.                                           [Agencies]

Kolkata, June 23 :    West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of 14 people due to collapse of a pandal during a religious programme in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Sunday.

"Saddened at the deaths after the tent collapse in Barmer, Rajasthan. My condolences to the grieving families.

Our prayers that the injured recover quickly," Banerjee said in a tweet.

At least 14 people were killed and about 50 injured after a pandal fell on them due to strong winds and heavy rains during a religious programme in Barmer district of Rajasthan.

A 'Ram Katha' was organised at a school ground near Rani Bhatiyani temple in Jasol area of the district. The pandal was uprooted by strong winds, trapping the people sitting under it, police said, adding hundreds of devotees were attending the programme.                  [Agencies]

Kolkata, June 21 :  The leader of the opposition in the state assembly and senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan demanded that the West Bengal government forms an inquiry commission to probe the "cut money scam" by a section of TMC representatives in parts of the state.

"We demand that there should be a inquiry commission into this cut money scam. The people who have been looted will have a outlet to vent out their grievances and the commission will have the right to identify those who have sought money from the common man. What is going on is creating chaos across the state," Mannan said.

His demand comes in the backdrop of the statewide protests outside residences of a number of TMC leaders by people, who sought the return of cut money taken by them.

Mostly, elected representatives at municipal and panchayat levels faced the public ire in the districts of Birbhum, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Burdwan, Malda, Purulia, Nadia, West Midnapore and Bankura.

At a recent meeting with TMC councillors, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, "I do not want to keep thieves in my party. If I take action they will join some other party. Some leaders are claiming 25 per cent commission for providing housing grants to the poor. This should stop immediately. Return the money if any of you have taken it. [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 17 :  The protesting doctors in West Bengal on Monday agreed to withdraw their week-long stir after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced steps to scale up security at hospitals

An assurance to call off the strike came at a meeting Banerjee held with representatives of the striking doctors at the state secretariat

"We are satisfied with the meeting," a representative of the doctors said, assuring Banerjee that the strike is going to be called off

A formal announcement on withdrawal of the strike is likely to be made from the epicentre of the protest, the NRS Medical College and Hospital.                       [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 15 :  Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday that the West Bengal government had not invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) even after five days of strike by the junior doctors and appealed to them to immediately rejoin service.

"We have the laws, but we do not want to use them.... We are not going to take any stringent action against any of the agitating junior doctors and hamper their career," she said at a news conference after the agitating doctors did not turn up for a meeting at 5 pm.

Under the ESMA, employees in a long list of "essential services" like post, railway, airport and port operations are prohibited from going on strike.

Banerjee cited instances of steps taken against doctors in similar situation by other states, adding that the West Bengal government had not taken any tough action against them as she does not want to hamper their careers.

The chief minister said the state government had accepted all the demands of the doctors and was ready to accept more, but she added that they must resume work.

"On Friday, I waited for the junior doctors for five hours. And today, I cancelled all my programmes for them. You must show some respect to the constitutional body," she said.

On the mass resignation of the doctors across the state, Banerjee said it was not legally tenable.

"If the junior doctors think I am incapable, they can always talk to the governor or the chief secretary... or the commissioner of police," she said.

The agitating doctors had earlier turned down an invite for a closed-door meeting with Banerjee at the state secretariat on Saturday, and instead asked her to visit the NRS Medical College and Hospital for an open discussion to resolve the impasse.                              [Agencies]

New Delhi, Jun 15  :   Patients in the national capital faced hardships for the second consecutive day as protest by doctors, in solidarity with their striking colleagues in Kolkata, spread to several government hospitals on Saturday.

Doctors at the Centre-run Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital, and RML Hospital, and Delhi government's healthcare facilities such as GTB Hospital, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital and DDU Hospital, boycotted work and held protests.

However, emergency and ICU services were not hampered in these hospitals.

Meanwhile resident doctors of AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, who resumed work after having boycotted it on Friday, have given a 48-hour ultimatum to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to meet the demands of the state's agitating doctors, failing which they said they would go on an indefinite strike.

They attended patients wearing helmets and bandages on forehead as a sign of protest. AIIMS resident doctors will also take out a candle march in the campus in the evening.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asked states to consider enacting a specific legislation for protecting doctors and medical professionals from any form of violence.

Along with a letter to all chief ministers, he also attached a copy of the Draft Act provided by IMA --the Protection of Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss of Property) Act, 2017.

The move comes after the Indian Medical Association (IMA) launched a four-day nationwide protest from Friday and wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding enactment of a central law to check violence against healthcare workers in hospitals, and making such crimes non-bailable offence.

The apex doctors body has called for a nationwide strike on June 17 with withdrawal of non-essential health services.

Patients bore the brunt of the protest, as they faced a lot of inconvenience and had to wait for long hours at hospital OPDs.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman who visited Lady Hardinge Medical College and Hospital for follow-up check up claimed that she could not find a doctor in the OPD.

"My ultra-sound is due. I always come here for check-up but today I could not find a doctor to consult with. Now I have to go somewhere else but I have learnt that protests are on at other hospitals too. We patients are facing lot of discomfort because of this strike," she said.

On Friday, a majority of hospitals in Delhi had joined the country-wide agitation in support of the doctors in West Bengal, on a call given by the India Medical Association (IMA) and various resident doctors' associations (RDAs).

However, many hospitals could not join the protest on June 14 as they had not submitted the 24-hour advance notice to the government as required by protocol.

So, they are observing a bandh on Saturday, President of Federation of Residents Doctors' Association (FORDA) Sumedh Sandanshiv said, adding however, ICUs and emergency wings of these hospitals are functioning.

In a statement, FORDA said they would be forced to go on an indefinite strike if the issue in West Bengal is not resolved.

There was a shutdown of out patient departments (OPDs), routine operation theatre services and ward visits, except emergency services at these hospitals of the city, where doctors held their token strike on Saturday.

Junior doctors in West Bengal are on a strike since Tuesday after two of their colleagues were attacked and seriously injured allegedly by relatives of a patient who died at NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

A forum of doctors in the national capital issued a statement holding the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal "squarely responsible for letting the situation snowball to the present state through sheer lack of sensitivity for concerns expressed by junior doctors".

It appealed to the resident doctors to include the healthcare issues concerning the common people in their struggle and asked the TMC government to "stop politicising on the issue and address the demands raised by doctors in the earnest".

Scores of doctors in Delhi had held demonstrations on Friday, with many attending to patients in emergency wards wearing bandages on forehead or helmets, marching and raising slogans.                                                                                             [Agencies]

Kolkata, Jun 14 : Agitating doctors Friday demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's unconditional apology and set six conditions for the state government to withdraw their four-day-long stir that disrupted healthcare services across West Bengal.

"We want unconditional apology of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the manner in which she had addressed us at the SSKM Hospital yesterday. She should not have said what she had," a spokesperson of the joint forum of junior doctors, Dr Arindam Dutta, said.

While visiting the SSKM Hospital on Thursday, Banerjee had contended that "outsiders" had entered medical colleges to create disturbances and the agitation was a conspiracy by the CPI(M) and the BJP.

Listing the six conditions, the agitators said the chief minister will have to visit the injured doctors at the hospital and her office should release a statement condemning the attack on them.

"We also want immediate intervention of the chief minister. Documentary evidence of judicial enquiry against the inactivity of the police to provide protection to the doctors at the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital on Monday night should also be provided," he said.

Two junior doctors were assaulted on Monday night by family members of a patient who died in the NRS Hospital.

"We demand documentary evidence and details of action taken against those who had attacked us," Dutta said.

They also demanded unconditional withdrawal of all "false cases and charges" which were imposed on junior doctors and medical students across West Bengal in the wake of their strike.

They also stressed on their demand for improvement of infrastructure in all health facilities as well as posting of armed police personnel there.                             [Agencies]

Barrackpore, Jun 11 :  At least two people were killed and three others severely injured when bombs were hurled at them late Monday night in the Kankinara area of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said Tuesday.

The TMC claimed that the victims were supporters of the party and were targeted by miscreants hired by the BJP, a charge denied by the saffron party.

The two deceased were identified as Mohammed Mukhtar and Mohammed Halim, police said.

Three people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, they added.

State minister and TMC's district president Jyotipriya Mallick alleged that the victims were targeted by miscreants hired by the BJP because they had voted for the ruling party in the state in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections.

BJP MP of Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency Arjun Singh, however, rubbished the allegations, saying that the incident was the result of a family feud and has no connection with politics.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at around 1 am in Baruipara, which is part of the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, when family members of Mukhtar were sitting outside, officials said.

"Halim died on the spot, while Mukhtar succumbed at the hospital. A critically injured Mukhtar's wife is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital along with two others," a senior police officer said.

Following the incident, a huge number of policemen, along with RAF personnel, have been deployed in the area.

When contacted, state ADG (Law and Order) Gyanwant Singh said he was collecting a detailed information about the incident.

Meanwhile, the BJP claimed on Monday night that a supporter of the party was strangled to death allegedly for chanting "Jai Shri Ram" by workers of the Trinamool Congress in the state's Howrah district.

Though police confirmed the death of 43-year-old Samatul Doloi, whose body was found in a field in Sarpota village under the Amta Police Station limits, officers were tight-lipped about the cause of the death.                                                                                                                            [Agencies]

New Delhi, Jun 10 :  West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday amid incidents of political violence in the state over which the Home Ministry has issued an advisory to the state government.

Tripathi told reporters before the meeting that it was a courtesy call as he had not called on the prime minister since he took over for a second term.

The state's ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP have been trading charges over political violence in the state, with the TMC terming the MHA advisory as a conspiracy against its dispensation.

Arambagh (WB), Apr 23 :
Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Tuesday alleged that the central forces were working for the BJP by asking voters in Maldaha Dakshin and Balurghat constituencies, where polling is underway, to cast their votes for the saffron party.

Pointing out that the central forces do not have the right to ask voters to vote for BJP candidates, Banerjee said the Election Commission has been apprised of it.

"I have got information that the central forces are sitting inside booths in Englishbazar in Maldaha Dakshin and asking voters to vote for the BJP. They do not have the right to do such thing. We have informed the Election Commission about our reservations regarding this," she said.

"Why are they (central forces) doing it? The police cannot enter a polling booth," she added.

She said that the central forces could come to a state during the elections but they should work with the assistance of the state force and then leave.

Criticising the BJP for allegedly using the central forces, she said, "You cannot use the central forces. You did the same thing during the 2016 (assembly) elections in West Bengal. I have not forgotten it."

West Bengal will teach the BJP an apt lesson, she claimed.

Central forces have been deployed at over 92 per cent of the booths in the third phase of the polling in five Lok Sabha constituencies on Tuesday.           [Agencies]

Malda, Mar 23 :   Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of lying all day and said he is the "chowkidar" of the corrupt and fugitives like Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya.

Congress is fighting to keep the country united and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be a fight between ideologies of the Congress and the BJP-RSS, he said at a rally here kicking off his party's campaign in West Bengal.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi keeps on lying all day.

Wherever he goes he lies ... The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state will be between ideologies. On one hand you have the Congress party which is fighting to keep the country united and on another hand the BJP-RSS-Narendra Modi who want to divide the country on religious and caste lines," Gandhi said while addressing a rally here.

Accusing Modi of being the "chowkidar" of "corrupt and fugitive" businessmen Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya, he said Narendra Modi had gifted Anil Ambani the Rafale deal and had looted Rs 30,000 crore of public money                                                   [Agencies]
