New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union president N Sai Balaji has been asked to present himself before a proctorial committee for allegedly violating an order of the varsity administration, according to a letter sent to him Friday.

On September 17, the administration had banned protests, rallies and processions in the varsity till further notice following alleged violence between members of the RSS-affiliated ABVP and the Left wing members.

In a letter sent to Balaji, it has been said that he led a procession on October 10 "with outsiders", which was in violation of the notice issued by the varsity's registrar.

He has been asked to present himself before a proctorial committee on October 22.

"The JNU administration has sent me a proctor notice for marching with contract workers celebrating "One Work One Pay" court judgement. The administration has lost it. First they cut salaries and harass workers and now they are wanting to punish students who are fighting with them for their rights," Balaji said.

New Delhi, Sep 17 : Members of the RSS-affiliated ABVP and the Left-backed AISA entered into a scuffle Monday, hours after the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) poll results were announced.


A united front of Left student groups Sunday won all four central panel posts in the union defeating the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) by considerable margins.

Newly-elected JNUSU president N Sai Balaji alleged that he was beaten up in the early hours of Monday by ABVP members.

He said members of the ABVP were roughing up an All India Students' Association (AISA) member and when "I and a couple of others intervened, we were assaulted".

Balaji claimed that the ABVP members even attacked them when a Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle was taking them away from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus.

However, the ABVP claimed that their members were roughed up by AISA activists.

The ABVP and the AISA have both filed complaints at the Vasant Kunj police station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Devender Arya said the situation is under control.

"The PCR got calls about a scuffle between students in JNU around 3 am. Subsequently, we had a discussion with university authorities, students and professors. 

"Complaints have been received in Vasant Kunj (North) police station. Legal action is being taken on merit. The situation is under control and normal. Police arrangements are in place," he said. 

Balaji of AISA bagged 2,161 votes in the JNUSU polls Sunday. He defeated ABVP candidate Lalit Pandey by a margin of 1,179 votes.

The Left-backed AISA, Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) and All India Students' Federation (AISF) came together to form the 'United Left' alliance.PTI

New Delhi, Sep 15: Counting of votes for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) polls was suspended early morning after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members protested alleging they were not informed about the process.

The ABVP said their counting agent was not informed about the beginning of counting of votes polled in science schools.

In a statement, the JNU Election Committee said it suspended the counting temporarily but refused to name the party which protested.

Members of Left student unions alleged that the ABVP created a ruckus. The ABVP denied the allegation.

"The counting process, which began on September 14 at 10 pm has been suspended due to forcible entry into the counting venue and attempts to snatch away the sealed ballot boxes as well as ballot papers from our counting centres," according to the JNU Election Committee.

The panel also claimed that their members, including women, faced intimidation.

The Left bloc claimed, "Around 4:00am, ABVP broke the glasses of the School of International Studies building. EC stopped the counting indefinitely."

They also claimed the ABVP counting agent was called but he did not turn up on time.

Vijay Kumar, ABVP president of JNU, said their counting agent was not called and the counting process was initiated in front of the members of the Left outfit.

"We protested peacefully as the EC is biased towards the Left. We did not create any ruckus," he said.

The voter turnout in the keenly contested Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) election on Friday was 67.8 per cent, believed to be the highest in six years. Over 5,000 students cast their votes.

The Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) and All India Students' Federation (AISF) have come together to form the United-Left alliance.

Besides the Left bloc, there are candidates of ABVP, NSUI (National Students' Union of India) and BAPSA (Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association).

Technical glitches in EVMs had led to a ruckus during the counting process for Delhi University Students' Union polls on Thursday, leading to suspension of counting for close to three hours. The counting had resumed only after parties reached a consensus. (PTI)

New Delhi, Sep 14: Polling for the keenly contested Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) election is underway with students queuing up to cast their votes for the four crucial posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.

The first phase of polling began at 9.30 am and will continue till 1.30 pm. In the second phase, the voting will resume at 2.30 pm and go on till 5.30 pm.

All arrangements have been made by the election authorities for the JNUSU polls, which are being closely watched in the aftermath of various controversies that rocked the universities across the country in the recent past.

The Left-backed All India Students' Association (AISA), Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students' Federation (DSF) and All India Students' Federation (AISF) have come together to form the United-Left alliance.

Besides routine campaigning, the candidates in the JNUSU polls also participated in the presidential debate on Wednesday night and answered the questions that followed.

The sought-after event, on the lines of the US presidential debate, is expected to be a deciding factor in the polls. (PTI)

New Delhi, Sep 13: It was a fiery presidential debate ahead of the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) polls, with candidates alleging that "anti-national" elements were present on the institute's campus and the country was turning into "lynchistan".

The election to the JNUSU president's post is scheduled to be held on Friday.

In his speech, United-left panel candidate N Sai Balaji, a frontrunner for the top post, said, "Mobs are allowed to kill people and get away with it as they have the backing of the RSS and the central government, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The country has been turned into lynchistan."

"Demonetisation was a failure, there are no jobs as promised and there is a constant attack on higher education," Balaji said Wednesday night.

Lalit Pandey, the candidate of the BJP's student wing ABVP, alleged that there were "anti-national" elements present on the campus and promised to "fix" them if voted to the post.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal's student wing has fielded a candidate for the first time in the JNUSU elections.

Its candidate Jayant Kumar much like the Congress-affiliated NSUI's nominee, Vikas Yadav, attacked the Centre over reducing funding for higher education, and lowering the number of seats at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and scuttling with its reservation policy.

The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Student Association's presidential candidate, Thallapelli Praveen, said his party represents the voice of students from oppressed classes on the campus.

Praveen asked students to think beyond the left and right binary.

Besides routine campaigning, candidates in the JNUSU polls are supposed to give speeches about their agenda at the presidential debate, which is followed by a round of questions.

The event was conducted on the lines of the US Presidential debate and is a sought after affair.

The JNUSU debate is a deciding factor for the union elections. (PTI)

New Delhi, Mar 23: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj on Friday requested Lt Governor Anil Baijal to direct the Delhi Police to register an FIR against the lawyer of JNU Professor Atul Johri for allegedly revealing the names of victims related to the molestation case of his client. 
“LG Sir, Pleases direct Delhi Police to register FIR against this advocate (of Prof Johri) for revealing the names of victims of molestation in JNU case,” the AAP leader said in a tweet.
Mr Bharadwaj's appeal to the LG comes after former vice-president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), Shehla Rashid alleged that the lawyer of the accused Professor has revealed the names of the complainants during a debate on a news channel. 
It may be noted that the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution in which it urged the state Government to extend assistance to victims in the alleged molestation by the professor.
The resolution was moved by Mr Bharadwaj in the House.
The accused professor was arrested on Tuesday by Delhi Police, but was granted bail a Court here later. 
He was held on charges of sexual harassment after students lodged complaints against him at Vasant Kunj Police Station on Thursday night. UNI
