Kolkata, May 8: The Special Task Force (STF) investigating the trails of dead animals' meat across West Bengal has found that a lion's share of rotten meat was supplied to New Market, a handshaking distance from Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters in central Kolkata.
This was revealed after police took the arrested kingpin Biswanath Gorui to New Market today in search of his connection and other sellers of rotten meat, including that of carcass, police said.
However, all the questionable meat sellers shut their shops and fled.
A report said almost 40 per cent of rotten meat was used to be supplied at New Market, from where the meat was delivered to hotels and eateries.
Meanwhile, the authorities have sealed cold storage owner Biswanath Gorui's two bank accounts of Rs 94 lakh and search continued to find out his linkmen and relatives.
Police also arrested a meat seller from Garia for selling rotten chicken today.
Police also arrested four owners of as many shops at Katwa in Burdwan and arrested them for selling rotten meat. UNI

Kolkata, Apr 10: The State Power and Non-Conventional Energy Sources Department and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) are together going to implement a unique project – Kolkata’s first floating solar power plant.
The power generating solar photovoltaic (PV) cells are going to be placed on the waters of Bikramgarh Lake in Golf Green in the southern part of the city.
The full project, which includes beautification of the lake, would cost Rs 4 crore.
According to State Government sources, the power generated by the solar PV cells would lead to the saving (over conventional generation costs) of about Rs 40.5 crore.
The project would cover an area of 1 acre of the 7.3 acres that the lake is spread over.
The rows of cells would be placed on a network of pipes, which would be balanced on the surface of the water with anchors lying at the bottom of the lake.
Preliminary work for setting up the power plant has already started.
Echo sounding is being used to measure the depth of the lake and bathymetry is being used to map the lake floor. UNI

Kolkata, Feb 10: The West Bengal Government is planning to set up its first crematorium for pets near Armenian Ghat in Kolkata.
The Animal Resources Development Department is going to set it up at an approximate cost of Rs 25 lakh. 
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will extend technical support to complete the project.
A small electrical furnace will be set up initially where dogs, cats and other small animals will be cremated.

Kolkata, Jan 22: After successfully combating dengue in its jurisdictional areas, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has now taken to social media to spread awareness about the vector-borne disease. 
As it is said, prevention is always better than cure, and hence, the effort has started from the beginning of the year itself.
KMC will be active on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and on WhatsApp in collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGO), clubs and organisations which take up such awareness campaign.
Social media being interactive, KMC will also be looking forward to feedback from the common people.
According to the Member Mayor-in-Council (Health), KMC, they are hopeful that this move will gradually involve more and more people and hence will give teeth to the KMC’s campaigns.
The health department of the civic body has started its dengue awareness drive from January 20 and will continue till the month of June. On that day, the mayor will walk in a rally on dengue awareness in central Kolkata to mark the beginning of the awareness drive. On the same day, councillors will hold rallies in their respective wards with the same purpose.
As a part of the drive, there will be door-to-door visits with pamphlets and leaflets and a number of rallies in all the 144 wards under the initiative of the respective councillors to spread the message of dengue awareness.
The KMC has also asked local clubs to highlight do’s and don’ts pertaining to dengue when they conduct programmes like blood donation camps. UNI

Kolkata, Jan 4: To accommodate people who come to Kolkata for various purposes but are too poor to put up in hotels or hire a place to stay, many of whom come to earn a living, and some for purposes like medical treatment as well as vagabonds and pavement and slum dwellers, the West Bengal Government and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) run night shelters.
Now, KMC has decided to build more such shelters. So the civic body is holding talks with various government organisations like Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT), Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC), Port Trust and the Railways to request them to hand over some of the extra vacant land plots they have. 
It is already preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to set up a night shelter on Mahatma Gandhi Road in ward 122.
At present, Kolkata has 40 night shelters, of which 35 have been set up by the State Government and five by the KMC. These five are located in Chetla, Bhowanipore, Galiff Street, Gauribari Lane and Raja Manindra Road, and can accommodate around 2,500 people on a daily basis. UNI

Kolkata, Nov 6: The West Bengal Government is taking a lot of initiatives to increase the share of renewable energy to the total power requirement of the state.
Among renewable energy sources, solar energy is the leading contributor.
Now, the government is going for a new concept in solar lighting – solar tree.
A solar tree is a set of solar panels bunched together like a tree, connected to a central pole. This type of ‘tree’ is going to be one of the crucial elements in making Kolkata an environment-friendly city.
The first is going to be set up at a park in south Kolkata, and later on, would be set up across the state.
Each day, such a tree would be able to produce 5 kiloWatt (kW) of energy. Considering also the stylish object that it is, these would lead to both the saving of both money (from less use of conventional energy) and the beautification of landscapes.
Another advantage of the solar trees is that whereas panels to produce 5 kW energy would take up a space of 500 square feet (sq ft), whereas a solar tree producing the same amount of energy would take up an area of just 9 sq ft.
Each tree would have 20 solar panels, spread out like the branches on a tree. Each panel would produce 250 watt (w) of solar energy, leading to a total of 5000 w or 5 kW. The height of each tree would be 25 to 30 feet (ft).
However, to enable easy maintenance, the panels would be put up in three layers at a height of 12 feet.
Initially the trees would be east-facing, but later on they would be made to rotate so that the panels move along with the sun from east to west, in order to capture the maximum amount of energy.
Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute has designed the solar trees. They are going to be made by a nationally licensed company.
In another related development, encouraged over the drastic 80 per cent fall in electricity bill at Deshapriya Park after the installation of solar-powered lights two years ago, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is all set to light up Jatin Das Park and Maddox Square with solar lights. The installations were inaugurated on October 24.
According to a KMC mayor-in-council member, the target is to cover all major parks with solar lights in a year or two. This will have great impact on the environment. UNI
