The Chief Guest of the camp was S.A Nazi Officer of National Board for Workers Education & Development (Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India)
Speaking on the occasion (Kuldeep Singh Pathania District  Manager Women’s Dev. Corporation Kathua/Samba,highlighted various schemes being implemented by JKWDC viza viz NMDFC , NBCFDC, NHFDC WEP, and Education loan schemes launched by JKWDC for socio-economic upliftment of women. 
         S.A Nazi Officer of National Board for Workers Education & Development who requested the women to come forward and take the benefits of the loan schemes provided at nominal rate of interest. Also spoke about BETI PADAO BETI BACHAO and SWACH BHARAT ABHIYAN.
Others who attended the camp were Gopal Sharma President Grameem Mahila Vikas Kendar, NGO Regd. Raj Kumar Sr. Member, Sunil Kumar Social Worker Staff JKWDC  & other prominent peoples. The women were made aware about state / centrally sponsored schemes launched and sponsored by the women’s Development Corporation for upliftment of women. At last refreshment was served to the gathering.

Calls for collective efforts to ensure Swachh JK
         SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 02: As a part of the nation-wide campaign ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ under Swachh Bharat Mission ( Urban) on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Department of Housing & Urban Development in collaboration with various stakeholders organized a grand sanitation drive (Plogging-Jogging with litter picking) here today.
The drive was flagged-off by the Chief Secretary, BVR Subrahmanyam from the Tagore Hall-Iqbal Park Srinagar early in the morning in presence of a large number of senior government functionaries, prominent citizens, members of NGOs, SHGs, students and other stakeholders of the society.
The enthusiastic participants, especially youth, students and volunteers walked through the Lala Ded Hospital, Maharaja Bazar, Amira Kadal, Lal Chowk and culminated at Sher-e-Kashmir Park. During the walk, the participants picked up the garbage on the way and also spread the mass awareness on sanitation and appealed the people to maintain cleanliness in the city and their surroundings. The NGOs had also set up Kiosks at various places to highlight the importance of sanitation and general awareness for the people.
Interacting with the participants, the Chief Secretary said that sanitation is mandatory to ensure healthy and clean environment. He called upon all the stakeholders to become part of nation-wide Swachhata campaign under Swachh Bharat Mission and contribute for the noble cause in maintaining the Jammu and Kashmir a neat and clean State.
          He said only government efforts cannot achieve the mission of clean Jammu and Kashmir. “Entire society and all stakeholders have to join hands in this collective movement.” He asked the students to become ambassadors of the grand mission to spread awareness among the masses to ensure cleanliness in their homes and surroundings. He said “Gandhi Jayanti is such a sacred occasion when we all should take a pledge to contribute towards noble cause of sanitation and connect ourselves to the grand nation-wide sanitation campaign to ensure healthy and prosperous society.”
Prominent among those present on the occasion included, Financial Commissioner Housing & Urban Development, K.B. Palu, Oct 2: The bodies of dozens of students have been pulled from their landslide-swamped church in Sulawesi, officials said Tuesday, as an international effort to help nearly 200,000 Indonesia quake-tsunami victims ground into gear.

The discovery adds to the already-high death toll from Friday's disaster, when a powerful earthquake sent a devastating tsunami smashing into the seaside city of Palu.

At least 844 people are already known to have died, but officials say that number is certain to rise -- perhaps into the thousands -- as isolated communities are reached and the scale of the disaster becomes clearer.

Survivors are battling thirst and hunger, with food and clean water in short supply, and local hospitals are overwhelmed by the number of injured.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by a lack of heavy machinery, severed transport links and the scale of the damage.

As if to remind the world of the tectonic fragility of Indonesia, a series of quakes rocked the country on Tuesday morning, albeit hundreds of kilometres from Palu.

The Indonesian military is leading the rescue effort, but following an appeal for international help by the president, NGOs also have teams on the ground in Palu.

At a church in central Sulawesi that had been hit by a landslide, the Red Cross made a grim discovery.

"A total of 34 bodies were found by the team," Indonesia Red Cross spokeswoman Aulia Arriani told AFP, adding that 86 students had initially been reported missing from a Bible camp at the Jonooge Church Training Centre. Arriani said rescuers faced an arduous trek to reach the mudslide and retrieve the victims.

"The most challenging problem is travelling in the mud as much as 1.5 hours by foot while carrying the bodies to an ambulance," she said.

Mountainous Sigi Biromaru district is one of those more remote regions, lying to the southeast of Palu city.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation but there are small pockets of religious minorities, including Christians, across the archipelago.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned Monday that there were 191,000 people in urgent need of help after the quake-tsunami, among them 46,000 children and 14,000 elderly -- many in areas that aren't the focus of government recovery efforts.

The dead -- many yet uncounted, their bodies still trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings -- are also a source of concern for authorities.

In Indonesia's hot, equatorial climate, bodies quickly begin to rot and provide a breeding ground for fatal diseases.

At Poboya -- in the hills above the devastated seaside city of Palu -- volunteers have begun to fill a vast grave with the dead, with instructions to prepare for 1,300 victims to be laid to rest.

Trucks stacked with corpses wrapped in orange, yellow and black bags are bringing their load to the site, where the corpses are dragged into the grave as excavators pour soil on top.

In Balaroa, a Palu suburb once home to a housing complex, flattened trees, shards of concrete, twisted metal roofing, door frames and mangled furniture stretched out into the distance.

Dazed groups of people ambled over the wreckage, unclear where or how to start digging. Among them were three men looking for their younger brother.

Rescuers are racing against the clock and a lack of equipment to save those still trapped in the rubble, with up to 60 people feared to be underneath one Palu hotel alone.

Two people have been plucked from the 80-room Hotel Roa-Roa, Indonesia's search and rescue agency said, and there could still be more alive.

Desperate survivors have turned to looting shops for basics like food, water and fuel as police look on, unwilling or unable to intervene.

"The government, the President have come here, but what we really need is food and water." Burhanuddin Aid Masse, 48, told AFP.

Many survivors have spent the last days desperately searching for loved ones while dealing with the trauma of the disaster.

One survivor, Adi, was hugging his wife by the beach when the tsunami struck on Friday. He has no idea where she is now, or whether she is alive.

"When the wave came, I lost her," he said. "I was carried about 50 metres. I couldn't hold anything," he said.

Others have centred their search for loved ones around open-air morgues, where the dead lay in the baking sun -- waiting to be claimed, waiting to be named.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was working to reunite families who had become separated during the disaster and was providing "forensic services" to those carrying out the grim task of identifying victims. (AFP)

Itanagar, Sept 27: As many as 171 species of butterfly have been catalogued in Yazali area of Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh during the fifth Ziro Butterfly meet.

Some of the rare species spotted during the two-day meet, organised by an NGO NgunuZiro, include White Dragontail, Veined Jay, Bispot, Black Prince, Large Yeoman, Tiger Hopper, Red Base, Jezebel, Grey Pansy and Chocolate Tiger, the NGO said in a press statement.

The meet's recommendations include submission of proposals to the government for declaration of 'Kaiser-e-Hind' as a state butterfly and the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary as a butterfly sanctuary, the statement said.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Koj Rinya said that the Lower Subansiri district could be developed as a butterfly hub. She welcomed all to visit the Talle Wildlife Sanctuary where rare butterflies were found.

NgunuZiro has been organising Ziro Butterfly Meet every year to spread awareness about the importance of all creatures and to promote conservation effort.

Butterfly lovers from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam participated in the meet.

The fifth edition of the Ziro Butterfly Meet, concluded on Sunday, was sponsored by the state tourism department.  (PTI)

 KUPWARA SEPTEMBER 18: National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), today organized a workshop at Kupwara on Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) and other Centrally Sponsored Schemes promoted by NABARD as a Nodal agency in district Kupwara. 
          Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Kupwara, Mohammad Yousuf Mir chaired the workshop which was attended by JD Planning Imtiyaz Ahmad, DDM NABARD Zubair Wasil, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Kupwara, officials from Sheep Husbandry, Cooperative Department, KVK, LDM, NRLM Officials, Bankers, NGOs and Progressive Dairy Farmers of the District.
          ADDC on the occasion advised animal and sheep husbandry departments to provide all support and cooperation in implementation of the scheme in the district.
           He also advised the banks to provide timely sanction of the cases under the scheme, so that maximum beneficiaries will be covered under GOI Schemes. The ADDC stressed on regular conduct of awareness camps on village level and block level in the district so that the people are fully aware of all the schemes. 
   While giving presentation, DDM NABARD apprised about the benefits of the scheme and the contribution of diary sector to the cause of doubling of farmer income by 2022, especially for small and marginal farmers who constitute almost 85% of the farming community in the district. He also applauded the bankers and Animal Husbandry department for their efforts during 2017-18 in sponsoring and disbursing the maximum number of cases during the period.
          The sale and features of the current DEDS and method of online claim was discussed in detail. He said beneficiaries can step up dairy units ranging from 2 animals to 10 at the rate of Rupees 70000 per animal. The scheme also carries a subsidy component of 25% for general category and 33.33% for ST/SC.
          DDM said that DEDS scheme has 09 components like the establishment of dairy units, purchase of milking machine, dairy product transportation facility, cold storage facility for dairy products etc, He stressed for sponsoring and disbursement of a greater number of cases under the scheme. He suggested for better backward and forward linkages, adaptation of milk villages, strengthening of veterinary health in the district.
 JD Planning, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer and LDM besides progressive farmers also shared their thoughts and experiences on the occasion.

New Delhi, Sep 18: The Supreme Court Tuesday stayed a Patna High Court order asking the CBI special director to set up a fresh team to probe Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse case.

Patna High Court had on August 29 ordered that a fresh team of investigators be constituted by the Special Director of CBI in the case in which incidents of alleged rape and sexual assault of women inmates over a period of time had come to light in an NGO-run shelter home at Muzaffarpur.

A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said changing the CBI team at this stage will be detrimental to the ongoing investigation.

Attorney General K K Venugopal told the court that the existing probe team carrying out investigation was set up by the CBI director on July 30.

"We don't see any reason why the existing CBI team, probing the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, should be changed at this stage," the apex court said.

Over 30 girls were allegedly raped at the shelter home run by Brajesh Thakur, the chief of a state-funded NGO. The alleged sexual exploitation of the girls was first highlighted in an audit report submitted by TISS to the state's social welfare department.

The top court also asked the probe agency to place before it the two status reports of probe in the case which were filed earlier before the Patna High Court and listed the matter for further hearing on September 20.

An FIR was lodged against 11 people, including Thakur, on May 31. The probe has been taken over by the CBI.

The incidents of alleged rape and sexual assault of the women inmates had come to light after a social audit was conducted by the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). (PTI)

BANDIPORA, SEPTEMBER 13: Additional District Development Commissioner Bandipora, Mohammed Qasim said the people of Bandipora should co-operate and support the initiatives of CSIR- Indian Institution of Integrative Medicine Srinagar for leveraging the benefits of commercial cultivation of aromatic plants in the district.
 He made these remarks while speaking in the daylong awareness programme on " Cultivation and Processing of High-Value Aromatic Plants" organised by CSIR-IIIM in collaboration with NGO Raazdani Herbs and Herbal Products Nadihal at mini secretariat Bandipora.
The objective of the programme was to aware the general masses about the rich biodiversity of medicinal and aromatic plants and highlight the importance of the frontline aromatic crops suitable for the cultivated and uncultivated lands in district. The programme was attended by the large number of entrepreneurs, farmers, general public and students besides the officers of various departments like KVIB, agriculture and Horticulture.
On the occasion, ADDC said that the cultivation of aromatic plants has assumed greater significance, as it has not only huge employment potential but surely a capacity to increase the income level of the society as a whole. He said that the people should come forward for developing Bandipora as a model district in the production of aromatic crops.
While speaking on the occasion, nodal officer CSIR Aromatic Mission, Dr Qazi Parvaiz said that, the aromatic crops like lavender, Rose Mary and Mentha Spp are very suitable for the topography of district and the adjoining areas to enhance the income of rural and marginalized farmers. He said that cultivation of these crops will open new opportunity for the farmers and unemployed youth for the production of aromatic oils, perfumes, insecticide-repellents, aromatherapy, food supplements and nutraceuticals industry.

BUDGAM, SEPTEMBER 4: One day training cum mock drill programme on disaster management was organized by District Disaster Management Authority Budgam in cooperation with District Administration and School education Department was inaugurated by District Development Commissioner Budgam Dr. Syed Sehrish Asgar today at Girls Higher Secondary School Budgam.
The Training cum mock drill programme is one among the series of programmes to be organized in different parts of the district as well as in educations institutions in coming period. The day long training programme was also attended by Principal GHSS Farooq Ahmad Raina, faculty of teaching staff besides huge gathering of students, NGOs, Volunteers was aimed to impart firsthand training from experienced disaster management volunteers  as how to tackle the initial emergency during any disaster or calamity.
Speaking on the occasion, DDC Budgam said these kind of training programmes are must to attend in order to garner awareness and steps of preparedness so that response towards different natural and manmade disasters   are mitigated without any loss of life and property. She urged upon the students to evolve themselves fully and remain fully prepaid to face any eventuality as at when it happens. “It is your duty whatever you learn through these programmes, mock drills must be imparted to others particularly young generation so that everyone will envisage his services during any emergency, as prompt and swift response can minimize the damages to a large extent,” she said.

JAMMU, AUGUST 29: Urban Forestry Division in collaboration with Bharat Vikas Parishad Trikuta Nagar Branch celebrated Van Mahotsav here today at Trikuta Nagar park.
The programme was organized under the supervision of Chief Conservator of Forests Sameer Bharti, Conservator of Forests East Circle Jammu B Mohan Dass and DFO Urban Forestry Division Jammu Anup Soni under Institutional Plantation Programme.
The programme was started by planting Bel plants by Range Officer Rakesh Verma and President Bharat Vikas Parishad P.L. Saraf.
The other members of NGO present on the occasion were Sunita Gupta and R.C. Khullar.
Rakesh Verma welcomed the initiative of NGO for organizing plantation drive and urged for holding similar drives in educational institutions, parks, hospitals etc.

Jammu, Aug 27: Former Deputy Chief Minister and MLA Gandhi Nagar Kavinder Gupta toured Chatha Satwati area of Gandhi Nagar and took stock of the damages to houses due to the recent rains.
while addressing at Shamali Mohalla Chatha, Gupta said that the Govt is very aware about its responsibilities towards the citizens of the state. He said that natural calamities can come but we will not allow people to suffer because of that. He also said that advance planning and preparedness to meet natural disasters is to be developed in our states. He said that all advanced countries have contingency management plans and effective forecasting whereby they are able to minimise the effects of natural disasters. He said that our govt will make every endeavour to develop such capacities.
Gupta further said that he will depute the Team of Govt. officials lead by BDO Satwari to access the quantum of the losses suffered, and then get the needful done on priority. Various delegations met the Former Deputy Chief Minister there and put forth their demands which mainly consisted of the Road problem, drains, and Health care and electricity problems faced by the inhabitants. Gupta Listened to the problems and assured the delegations that all the demand would be fulfilled shortly. He said that Tendering for the Blacktopping of various roads in this helmet is under process and in the month of September all the roads would be macamadazied.
Locals appreciated the efforts of the Kavinder Gupta and expressed their gratitude for taking up their pending demands time to time, on priority and also brought some other issues to his notice for early disposal. Gupta was accompanied by Pitamber Sharma, Bhushan Kumar among others.
Later, Gupta also launched Mega Plantation drive in presence of Parveen Sharma Director Citizen Cooperative Bank and Ankush Gupta at GGHS Gandhi Nagar. More than 100 Plants of different varieties were planted in school premises.  While addressing the School children and the staff members, Gupta said that it is the need of hour to plant more and more trees in Urban and rural areas of Jammu to make Jammu “Green Jammu Clean Jammu”. Gupta appreciated the efforts of Jagdish Sharma from NGO “Technyme for All” for this noble cause. He said that children can play a vital role in spreading this campaign. On the demand of Hand Pump in the school premises, Kavinder assured that within 15 days the work for hand pump shall be taken up.  In the end Vote of thanks was given by Headmaster Kiran Rajput to the dignitaries present. She said the initiate was taken on the direction from Director School Education Jammu, Rakesh Sarangal KAS.

Srinagar, Aug 25: A civil society group in Jammu and Kashmir today threatened mass agitation across the state if Article 35A of the Constitution, which is facing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court, was tinkered with.

The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Coordination Committee (JKCSCC), which claims to have members from all three regions of the state-- Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh-- is an intervener in the case in the apex court.

The JKCSCC said if the constitutional provision which relates to the special rights and privileges of permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir was removed, the relation of the state with the Union will be broken .

If anything is done to Article 35A, the relation with India will be broken there and then. If that happens, there will be a mass agitation," Muzaffar Shah, a member of the JKCSCC told reporters here at a joint press conference with other members of the civil society formation.

"We will come out on the roads right from Lakhanpur (the gateway to the state in Jammu region) to Leh (in Ladakh region of the state)... There will be bloodshed. Then peace will not be established, he added.

He, however, expressed hope that the SC would dismiss the petition filed by an NGO.

Suhail Kazmi a member of the group from Jammu said the constitutional provision was an issue of the identity and dignity of the people of the state and it was the duty of every citizen to safeguard it.

The people of Jammu region will bear the maximum impact if it goes away. We are with the people of Kashmir on this. The people of Jammu want Article 35A and Article 370 to remain intact, he said. (PTI)

Madikeri (K'taka), Aug 25: They walked for miles on slippery trails, crossing cascading streams and braving landslides.

Many were aged men and women, whose lives had gone awry in the wake of the torrential rains that lashed Kodagu district in Karnataka, bordering Kerala, claiming at least 17 lives and leaving a trail of destruction since August 12.

Several people were carried on shoulders to the relief camps, where they sat waiting for their names to be called to receive food and other relief materials.

The residents of Kodagu not only lost their homes due to the incessant rains and floods, but were also cut off from the rest of the world due to frequent landslides.

Since August 16, the villagers living in and around Madikeri were rescued and taken to the relief camps.

The much-needed support was a result of a joint relief-and-rescue operation undertaken by the RSS-affiliated Seva Bharati and the Usmaniya Charitable Trust (Bhadravati), an NGO run by Muslims.

Talking to PTI at a relief camp here, Anjali, a resident of Kodagu, said, "We feel so relieved and confident about life...We had lost all hope...Just then, the Seva Bharati and the Usmaniya Charitable Trust came to our rescue and provided succour."

"They rescued and brought us here. Some of them carried the aged people. For some, it was quite a challenge to wade through the muddied and slippery terrains and cross the cascading streams coming down the slopes of the hills.

"The experience still haunts us, but hope fills us when we sit for meditation and yoga in the morning. Even I chant 'Om', though I am a Christian," she added.

Some of the flood-hit people have great challenges before them as their houses were destroyed in the nature's fury.

One of them, Lakshmi, said, "My house has collapsed. I hope the government will help people like me."

Around 1,000 families were provided relief materials by the Seva Bharati and the Usmaniya Charitable Trust.

Mussavvir Basha, general secretary, Usmaniya Charitable Trust said they spent Rs 5 lakh for providing rice packets, water bottles, biscuits, free ambulance service, first-aid kits etc. to the marooned people.

"There was a barrage of fake news and hatred being spread on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms. Some mediapersons too, I am sorry to say, are dividing the country into north and south.

"In this backdrop, the joint operation should serve as an inspiration to people to bring unity in this hour of crisis," he said.

Basha and five others of the trust visited the RSS camp at Madikeri and proposed the joint operation.

Both the organisations took part in the rescue-and-relief work from August 21 to 24, before the members of the Usmaniya Charitable Trust returned to Bhadravati in Shivamogga district.

Expressing happiness over joining hands with the RSS-affiliated NGO, Usmaniya Charitable Trust president JBT Babu said they rescued 10 people.

"They (Seva Bharati) were very kind and treated our volunteers with the respect they deserved. We are moved and hope such concerted efforts will inspire other NGOs run by different faiths or communities to come together to serve the needy at times of crisis," he said.

Kodagu district RSS pracharak Avinash said the two organisations working together to reach out to the stranded people showed the way to solidarity and social harmony in a divided world.

More than 5,000 people have been rendered homeless in Kodagu district, where rescue-and-relief operations are underway in full swing. (PTI)

Speaking on the occasion Kavinder Gupta said that Government is fully committed to provide free education to all the sections of the society. He promised that he will be available round the clock for the betterment of the young generation. He said teachers should adapt new learning methods to make them competent enough, so that they can play a big role in their future for the development of themselves, family and the nation as well.
Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said that in today’s world, a teacher’s role is quite multifaceted.  The teachers should spread awareness among the students about all the schemes launched by the Government for the Betterment of the students.
On the demand of school administration for provision of ceiling fans and desks, Gupta assured them that he would take up the matter with concerned authorities and NGOs, so that necessary action could be taken up in this regard. School administration also brought the HT line which is passing over the school building and un-manned transformer outside school gate.
Gupta immediately called the PDD X-En to take necessary action at the earliest to avoid any eventuality.
The staff thanked Former Dy. CM and MLA Gandhi Nagar for immediate action.

Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education officer, Principals Govt and Private institutions, NGO workers and other officers were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, a detailed discussion was held on MR vaccination campaign implementation strategy besides other key aspects of the vaccination campaign in the district. it was given out  that All children from 09 months to less than 15 years of age will be given a single shot of Measles Rubella (MR) vaccination during the campaign.
The Deputy Commissioner who is also the Chairman, District Level Task Force for MR Immunization called upon all the line departments, educational institutions besides other stakeholders and organizations to extend their full cooperation and support within their respective areas to ensure successful conduct of the campaign.
The DC asked the DLTF to increase number of teams and days in case of schools with high number of enrolment. He further instructed the CEO to ensure the 100% presence of the students during the vaccination day so that no children are left without vaccination.
DC also directs ICDS department to provide the list of children in Anganwari centres to the health workers and ensure that all the children get vaccinated.
The meeting was informed that sensitization about the campaign and training of staff has been undertaken at various levels. It was said that micro planning at zonal and block levels are also at the final stage.
DDC also directed CEO to nominate two officials from each school for training at block headquarters. He also emphasized the important of ensuring there is a massive mass media campaign about the programme.

Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 10: Inmates of an old age shelter home run by 'Ma Vindhyavasini Mahila Prasikshan Evam Samaj Seva Sansthan' were taken to the BRD Medical college here for a health check-up as they seemed to be in a feeble state of mind.

The organisation has come under scanner after girls were rescued from a shelter home run by it in Deoria following allegations of sexual exploitation of inmates.

After the old age home at Rajla in Deoria district was sealed by the administration, the inmates were sent to a shelter home at (Samaj Kalyan Vriddha Ashram) in Kushinagar.

Since 22 inmates of the old age home seemed to be in a feeble state of mind, Dinesh Mishra, the manager of the old age home in Kushinagar, took them to the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur yesterday afternoon.

"The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Kushinagar district said that 21 female inmates and one male inmate of the old age home was unfit. The medical college did not admit the inmates and at around 7.30 pm, they told us to take back the inmates after giving medicines to them," Mishra told reporters here.

When contacted, principal of the medical college Ganesh Kumar said, "Old age is not a disease and the doctors may have found them fit during tests, so they have not admitted them."

Twenty-four girls were rescued from a shelter home in Deoria on August 6 after allegation of sexual exploitation of the inmates came to light. On On August 7 the Uttar Pradesh government recommended a CBI inquiry into the case hours after a girl missing from there was found at an old age home run by the same NGO in Gorakhpur.

When the police raided the Deoria shelter on Sunday night, a rescued inmate had told them that some girls from there used to be taken to Gorakhpur, and then brought back the next day.

All the three shelter homes run by the NGO have been sealed. (PTI)

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 8: Sh. Amod K Kant, Member Coordinator NITI Aayog - Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) Standing Committee, accompanied by Sh. Rakesh Ranjan, Joint Secretary, NITI Aayog, met Governor N.N. Vohra at the Raj Bhavan today.
Sh. Kant informed Governor about a number of issues relating to the implementation of various State and Central Government welfare schemes in J&K and how a larger role to be played by the CSOs could be beneficial not only in generating a widespread awareness of these schemes but also enable the targeted groups being able to avail full benefits available under the welfare schemes.
Governor highlighted the special concerns of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the context of the very large resource gap in funding the annual plans and the need for long-term planning for securing balanced growth and development of the State. In this context Governor lauded the role being played by NGOs in various sectors and hoped that, in the obtaining environment in the State, the CSOs in J&K would be able to play a truly significant role in development schemes and welfare programmes being implemented/ delivered with much higher success.

New Delhi, Aug 7: The Supreme Court today expressed concern over incidents of rape in the country and said that women are being raped "left, right and centre".

A bench comprising Justices M B Lokur, Deepak Gupta and K M Joseph pulled up the Bihar government for funding an NGO which ran the shelter home in Muzaffarpur where girls were allegedly raped and sexually abused.

The bench referred to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data and said that every six hours, a woman is raped in India.

The court referred the NCRB data and said 38,947 women were raped in India in 2016.

"What is to be done? Girls and women are getting raped left, right and centre," the bench said.

Advocate Aparna Bhat, who was appointed as an amicus curiae in the matter, told the court that no compensation has been paid to the alleged victims of sexual assault at the Muzaffarpur shelter home.

The lawyer also said that one of the girls, who was allegedly raped at the shelter home in Muzaffarpur, was still "missing".

Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), which conducted an audit of shelter homes, told the court that out of 110 such institutions in Bihar, "grave concerns" have been raised about 15.

To this, the Bihar government told the apex court that nine cases of sexual abuse have been lodged involving these 15 institutions run by various NGOs.

The hearing in the matter will resume at 2 PM.

The apex court had earlier restrained the electronic media from showing, even in morphed form, images of the alleged victims of rape and sexual assault at the shelter home, observing they cannot be compelled to "relive the trauma" again and again.

The bench had said that it had not restrained the police authority from conducting probe and if they want to question the alleged victims, they would have to take assistance of professional counsellors and qualified child psychiatrist in consultation with National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences in Bengaluru and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai.

Over 30 girls were allegedly raped at the shelter home run by Brajesh Thakur, the chief of the state-funded NGO.

The alleged sexual exploitation of the girls was first highlighted in an audit report submitted by TISS to the state's social welfare department in April.

An FIR was lodged against 11 people, including Thakur, on May 31. The probe has now been taken over by the CBI.

In all, sexual abuse of 34 inmates out of 42 was confirmed in their medical examination, while two others who were unwell were yet to undergo medical tests.

The TISS audit report stated that many girls at the shelter home had complained of sexual abuse. A special investigation team was formed to probe the complaints.

The NGO running the shelter home in Muzaffarpur was blacklisted and the girls were shifted to shelter homes in Patna and Madhubani.

Women staff members of the shelter home and Thakur were among those who were arrested by the police in connection with the case. (PTI)

Comm Secy calls for inclusion of nutritive cuisine in restaurant menus
SRINAGAR, AUGUST 03: Commissioner Secretary Forests, Saurabh Bhagat, today called for inclusion in restaurants and hotels of nutritive cuisine made of a rich selection of natural edible plants grown in forests across the State.
The Commissioner Secretary was speaking at an awareness programme on innovative cuisine development involving food made of an assorted selection of indigenous edible plants grown in State forests.
The awareness programme, organized in collaboration with the Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture and the Institute of Hotel Management Srinagar, is part of larger efforts of the Forest department aimed to introduce the nutrition-rich edible plants grown in forests in the local cuisine offered at restaurants and hotels in the State.
Bhagat said the Forest department is committed to the conservation of the wide spectrum of nutrition-rich wild edible plants grown in the State and is working with different agencies for their promotion as commercial commodities in the State.
He said the department shall offer all required support to herbal growers, herbal-farming innovators and herbal-cuisine developers and also do its best to encourage restaurants and hotels to include the traditional nutritive cuisine in their menus, particularly, at places with substantial tourist footfall.
The programme also included exhibition of a wide range of indigenous forest-grown plants with nutrient and medicinal properties including Nunar, Lissa, Ringa, Vishkand, Tromba, Aabhaak, Machran, Babbribeol, Kakodu, Gualmanda, Wopalhak ,Soi, Ubaj, Bum, Pamposh, Zaitoon, Bhatkram, Gardaul, Chhansh, Anjeer, Virien, Paindak, Chhatrhaak, Bibdi, Fafru, Wan wangun, Kaodach, Tulkul , Kulmansh, Kambei, Kahzawain, Kangichh, Prezdar, Kasrode, Sarbong.
Several NGOs working for the promotion of traditional food made from natural forest-grown plants in the State were also involved in the organization of the awareness programme.
 Director Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing, Joint Director Information (Kashmir), scientists, SKUAST teaching and research staff and heads of various NGOs were present on the occasion.

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 02: Commissioner Secretary Forest, Saurabh Bhagat today inaugurated an exhibition of herbal plants grown in the State having medicinal and nutrient values.
The exhibition was organized by Forest Department in collaboration with Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Institute of Hotel Management and some NGOs working for the promotion of traditional herbal plants in the State.
Calling for the conservation of wide spectrum of wild edible plants, Saurabh Bhagat said that Forest department has to work with other agencies for making the use of these herbal plants a commercial commodity in the State.  
 He said the need of the hour is to encourage hoteliers to include select nutritive cuisines in their menu at tourist destinations. He said that herbal growers, cuisine developers and innovators for herbal farming should also be given full support for taking this activity forward as a mission so that people get the benefit of the plants growing in our state.
Bhagat said that usages of indigenous plants like Nunar ,Lissa,Ringa , Vishkand, Tromba, Aabhaak, Machran, Babbribeol , Kakodu , Gualmanda, Wopalhak ,Soi, Ubaj, Bum, Pamposh, Zaitoon, Bhatkram, Gardaul , Chhansh, Anjeer , Virien, Paindak, Chhatrhaak ,Kala zeera, Bibdi, Fafru, Wan wangun, Kaodach, Tulkul , Kulmansh, Kambei, Kahzawain , Kangichh , Prezdar , Kasrode , Sarbong can be beneficial for overall health of common masses.
Director Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, O. P. Sharma in his keynote address gave a detailed account of the medicinal plants growing in the forests of the State.  He said efforts are required for making people aware about the importance of these herbal plants in our daily life, which not only having medicinal value but are having abundant nutrient value.
Other speakers while speaking on the subject highlighted the benefits of indigenous herbal plants besides the role Government and private agencies should play for reviving the tradition practice of using these herbal plants in daily life.
Joint Director Information, Kashmir, Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Faculties and research scholars of SKUAST besides heads of various NGOs, Officers from Forest Department were present on the occasion.
