Bishkek, Jun 14 :   In a veiled attack on Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that countries sponsoring, aiding and funding terrorism must be held accountable as he called for a global conference to combat the menace

Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit here, Modi highlighted the spirit and ideals of the SCO to strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism

India stood for a terrorism-free society, he said

"During my visit to Sri Lanka last Sunday, I visited the St Anthony's church, where I witnessed the ugly face of terrorism which claims the lives of innocents anywhere," the Prime Minister said

To combat the menace of terrorism, countries will have to come out of their narrow purview to unite against it, Modi said in the presence of his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan

"Countries sponsoring, aiding and funding terrorism must be held accountable," he said

Prime Minister Modi also called on the SCO member states to cooperate under the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) against terrorism

He also urged the SCO leaders to organise a global conference on terrorism

"Literature and culture provide our societies a positive activity, specially they stop the spread of radicalisation among the youths in our society," Modi said

Modi arrived in the Kyrgyz capital on Thursday for the two-day SCO summit. The SCO is a China-led 8-member economic and security bloc with India and Pakistan being admitted to the grouping in 2017

India in the past has blamed Pakistan for carrying out terrorist attacks in the country and asked it to stop supporting terror outfits operating from its soil

India has not been engaging with Pakistan since an attack on the Air Force base at Pathankot in January of 2016 by a Pakistan-based terror group, maintaining that talks and terror cannot go together

Early this year, tensions flared up between India and Pakistan after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) killed 40 CRPF personnel in Kashmir's Pulwama district

Amid mounting outrage, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting the biggest JeM training camp in Balakot in Pakistan on February 26. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in an aerial combat and captured an IAF pilot, who was later handed over to India

Kyrgyzstan, May 15: Four additional countries in the WHO European Region have successfully added the inactivated poliomyelitis (polio) vaccine (IPV) to their routine immunization schedules this year.
With support from Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners, Turkmenistan introduced IPV on January 2, the Republic of Moldova on April 2, Uzbekistan on April 24 and Kyrgyzstan on May 2.
Tajikistan plans to introduce IPV in June, a WHO European Region report on Tuesday said.
This progress means that IPV will now be routinely offered to children in every Member State in the Region, as prescribed in the global Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013–2018.
Of the three known types of wild poliovirus, type 2 is no longer circulating and was declared globally eradicated in 2015.
As the next planned step, the remaining countries in the world using oral polio vaccine (OPV) were required to switch from trivalent OPV (containing all 3 poliovirus types) to bivalent OPV (bOPV – containing only types 1 and 3). The switch took place in a globally synchronized manner between April 17 and May 1, 2016.
OPV contains weakened forms of the live virus and is given in drops, while IPV contains inactivated forms of all 3 poliovirus types and is given by injection.
To maintain immunity levels to type 2 polio, countries that switched to bOPV were required to add at least 1 dose of IPV to their routine schedules as soon as possible following the switch. This would also help to mitigate risk of emergence of vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV).
Due to a shortage in IPV caused by the sudden increase in global demand, priority in supplying the vaccine was given to countries considered to be at high risk of circulation in the event of VDPV emergence. Introduction in countries considered to be at lower risk of transmission was postponed to 2018, when the supply situation would be stabilized.
All of the remaining five countries in the region using OPV were considered to be at lower risk and thus scheduled to introduce IPV this year.
Catch-up immunization activities are planned in each of these countries in early 2019 to ensure that all children born since the switch to bOPV receive their recommended shot of IPV.
The Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013–2018 calls for the gradual phasing-out of OPV. UNI
