Twenty people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Ayub Pandith during the intervening night of June 23 and 24 on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr outside historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muneer Ahmad Khan said today.


Srinagar, Jul 24 : Twenty people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Ayub Pandith during the intervening night of June 23 and 24 on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr outside historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Muneer Ahmad Khan said today. One of the accused Sajjad Gilkar, who had joined militancy since he went missing from June 29, was killed in an encounter with security forces in central Kashmir district of Badgam on July 12, the IGP told a crowded press conference here. To a question whether chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who addressed the congregation at the Jamia Masjid on that night, will also be questioned, the IGP said if the need arises, everyone will be questioned. However, he said, the investigation is still going on and more arrests could not be ruled out. UNI

SRINAGAR, JUNE 23: Deputy Chief Minster, Dr Nirmal Singh has strongly condemned the killing of Deputy Superintendent of police, Mohammad Ayub Pandit, who was lynched to death in Nowhatta area of the Old City here.
While terming the killing as gruesome and barbaric, the Deputy Chief Minster said that the perpetrators of this heinous crime have depicted their sadistic and inhuman nature and need to be condemned by everyone.
While expressing solidarity with the bereaved family members of the deceased police officer, Dr Singh prayed for the eternal peace to the departed soul.

The Deputy Chief Minister also condemned the killing of two soldiers of the by the Pakistani forces in the Poonch sector of Jammu division.

Appeals civil society to isolate elements who have brought disrepute to Kashmir, its tolerant values
SRINAGAR, JUNE 23: Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has strongly condemned the lynching to death of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Ayub Pandit by an unruly mob outside the historic Jama Masjid, Srinagar during the night long prayers of Shab i Qadr.
Terming the incident as highly shameful, the Chief Minister said what is unfortunate is that the said officer was posted at the grand mosque for its protection and for the facilitation, security and convenience of the devotees and who was killed during Shab i Qadr, the night of divine blessings and seeking Allah’s forgiveness and His generosity.
By this act of cowardice, the Chief Minister said the perpetrators have brought disrepute to the tolerant and accommodative nature of Kashmiri people. She appealed people in general and members of civil society in particular to rise to the occasion and isolate these criminal elements who are giving Kashmir and Kashmiris a bad name.
Later, the Chief Minister visited District Police Lines, Srinagar where she laid floral wreath on the body of late Mohammad Ayub Pandit. She interacted with the officers of JK Police and family members of the DySP and consoled them on his killing.

Minister for Rural Development Department, Abdul Haq Khan; Minister for Education, Syed Altaf Bukhari; Minister for R&B, Naeem Akhtar; Chief Secretary, B. B. Vyas; DGP, Dr. S. P. Vaid; senior officers of civil administration and Police, family members of the slain officer and a large number of people were present on the wreath laying ceremony.
