Srinagar, May 11: No Friday prayers were allowed in the historic Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar, where curfew-like restrictions were imposed to maintain any law and order following call for peaceful protests by separatists against the civilian killings in security force action in Kashmir valley.
Police said restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the areas falling under five stations of M R Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Nowhatta since Friday morning to maintain law and order.
Separatist leaders comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, had asked people to hold peaceful protests after Friday prayers against the civilian killings.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid remained closed and the main gates of the historic mosque, where the Mirwaiz addresses Friday congregation every week, were locked. Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest as a precautionary measure on Friday morning.
A large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside the Masjid and adjoining areas to stop any movement on the roads.
“There was also no ‘Azaan’ (call for prayers) in the historic Masjid today,” local residents said, adding that nobody was allowed to enter the area.
However, prayers were offered in the Valley, barring mosques on main roads in the areas where restrictions were imposed. People offered prayers in mosques in the interior areas in restricted areas.
Friday prayers were offered at Hazratbal shrine, which houses the holy Relic of Prophet Muhammad, on the bank of Dal Lake. Reports of offering of Friday prayers were also received from other parts of the valley.
Six youth were killed and about 30 others received bullet and pellet injuries in security force action in Shopian on demonstrators who hit the streets after five militants of HM, including a top commander and Assistant Professor of Kashmir University (KU) turned militant, were killed in an encounter on Sunday. Srinagar, May 9: Life returned to normal in Srinagar on Wednesday, after a three-day strike to protest the civilian death and militant killings on Saturday and Sunday in the valley.
The separatists have urged people to resume their normal activities after the strike.
Main gates of historic Jamia masjid, which also remained closed for the past three days to prevent any demonstrations, are open today.
Police said there are no restrictions in any part of the Srinagar city. However, additional security forces and state police personnel remained deployed at some sensitive places to maintain law and order, police said.
Restrictions under Section 144 CrPC had been imposed in the areas falling under five stations of M R Gunj, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, Rainwari and Nowhatta to maintain law and order. Similarly, restrictions have also been imposed in some areas under police station Kralkhud in old city and Maisuma in civil lines.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid in Srinagar are open as security forces had removed barbed wire. Bulletproof vehicles which were parked in the middle of some roads to prevent any traffic movement have also been withdrawn.
Normal activities resumed in the downtown as people came out of their houses in large numbers to purchase essentials. Milkmen and vegetable sellers could also be seen busy selling their products. Local bread-makers have also opened their shops.
However, security forces had to burst teargas and PAVA shells to disperse demonstrators who pelted stones when they (security forces) were withdrawing last night. Clashes continued till late in the night at several places.
People living on both sides of the Nallahmar finally had sigh of relief as security forces deployed to strictly implement restrictions have been withdrawn. Similar restrictions imposed in Khanyar, Rainawari and Malkha have also been withdrawn.
Large number of paramilitary forces and state police personnel remained deployed to maintain law and order in areas under police station Kralhud in the old town and Maisuma. Large number of security forces could be seen deployed on Moulana Azad road which is being used by VIPs, including Chief Minister to reach civil secretariat.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar and Malik, had last night urged people to resume normal activities after three days strike.
Five Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a top commander and Assistant professor of Kashmir University, who had joined the outfit last week, were killed in an encounter in Shopian on Sunday. Minister visits Nowhatta, interior areas of Rainawari


          SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 01: Minister of State for Housing & Urban Development, Asiea Naqash today said that the Government is committed to preserve unique cultural essence of historic Jamia Masjid in Downtown Srinagar.
          The Minister made these remarks during her visit to grand Mosque.
The representatives of Jamia Market Traders Federation met the visiting dignitary and appraised various grievances to the Minister.
Minister directed Commissioner SMC to improve sanitation drive, hygienic atmosphere besides install more streetlights around the Jamia Masjid area. She also instructed for repairing bathrooms, construction of women toilet block and askeds concerned officials to clear the chocked drains immediately so that devotees don’t face any inconvenience in visiting the religious place.
She also directed SMC Commissioner to identify suitable place immediately so that urban poor vendors of Jamia Masjid will be properly rehabilitated.
The Minister also took stock the construction work of Community Hall being executed near Jamia Masjid at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.87 crores.
She directed the engineers to speed up the pace of construction work so that this hall will be open for the public convenience soon.  
          On the occasion, Minister said that Government had already spent Rs 3.93 crore out of the total Rs 4.29 crore Union Government’s project to beautify the Jamia Masjid premises including developing its market and improving light system and the construction of Information Center, which is a component of the beautification project, costing Rs 1.02 crore.
Later, Minister visited interior areas of Rainawari and took stock of the developmental works being carried out there.
          Minister was informed that Rs 18 crores were allotted for drainage work in Rainawari area under AMRUT Scheme.
          Asiea directed engineers of UEED to start the construction work immediately before the onset of winters so that the locals get benefitted.
She also visited Gurpora (Khushki) Mohalla and took stock of the construction work of Community Hall. The estimated cost of this Hall is Rs. 2 crores. Minister directed Housing department to complete the construction work immediately for the convenience of the locals.   
While assuring the locals regarding speedy disposal of the ongoing works, Asiea told them that Government is committed to deliver high quality of civic amenities including a sustainable drainage network for the city as well as in Rainawari area and the funding under various Centrally and State sponsored schemes shall be spent with high accountability on the ground. 

           Commissioner SMC Reyaz Ahmad Wani, Executive Engineer SMC Shafat Khan, SE LAWDA, SE PDD, SE R&B, Engineers of PHE, UEED, Housing Department and other concerned officers accompanied the Minister.

Srinagar, Aug 18 :  Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq was today allowed to offer Friday prayers in the historic Jamia Masjid in the downtown after about two months. However, this was for the third successive week that Friday prayers were offered in Jamia Masjid since June 23, when for the first time in the history after Independence that prayers on Jumma-Tul-Vida, last Friday of Holy month of Ramadan, were disallowed by imposing restrictions. Official sources said Friday prayers were offered in all shrines and mosques across the Valley, including Jamia Masjid. Security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside the Jamia Market. However, there was no security force personnel in the main Jamia Market today and people were allowed to offer prayers in the Masjid. A moderate Hurriyat Conference spokesperson told UNI that Mirwaiz was released from house arrest after 57 days today. ''Mirwiaz immediately left for Jamia Masjid and addressed a Friday congregation,'' he said. Mirwaiz’s release came three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that no “Goli or Gaali” but ''Gala Lagana'' will help to solve the Kashmir problem. Mirwaiz had welcomed the statement of Prime Minister. Reports of offering Friday prayers were also received from other parts of the Valley, where clashes erupted between security forces and protestors in the afternoon at some places. UNI

Srinagar, Aug 14 : Curfew-like restrictions are back today after day-long normalcy yesterday in Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and downtown in Srinagar, where people remained indoor due to heavy security force and police deployment to prevent any law and order problem. Authorities had imposed similar restrictions on August 12 when separatists, backed by trader groups, had called for a strike against alleged attempts to abrogate Article 35-A. There were no restrictions yesterday in any part of the city. Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) urged people to observe a strike today against alleged attempts being made to abrogate Article 35-A of the Constitution. The strike was backed by many trader groups, including Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) and Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF). There was no strike call from any organizations today. However, separatists had called for a strike tomorrow, on the 7Ist Independence Day (ID) of the country. The authorities had apprehension of violence following the killing of two youths in alleged security force firing last evening in south Kashmir, where three Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a self styled top commander, were killed in an encounter. Two army personnel were also killed and three others, including an officer, were injured in the encounter which ended yesterday. Officials said that restrictions under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed as a precautionary measure in areas falling under five police stations of Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Khanyar in the down town and SeK since early this morning. However, the situation was entirely different on the ground as people alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses since early this morning. State police personnel and security forces, wearing bulletproof jackets, helmets and holding automatic weapons in their hands, were deployed in these areas to strictly implement the restrictions. All gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Umar Farooq, who remain under house arrest since last about two months, were also closed and a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the area. Nobody was being allowed to enter the Jamia Masjid area by the security forces. The entire Nallahmar road from Khanyar to Qamarwari was closed with barbed wires and no one was allowed to move on the road. Main and link roads were closed with barbed wire and by parking bullet proof vehicles in the middle. People of these areas alleged that milkmen and vegetable vendors were not allowed to enter from outskirts by the security forces due to which they had to drink black tea. However, the Safa Kadal road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) through Eidgah was open though only patients and ambulances were being allowed after checking their documents. Srinagar, Aug 4 :  Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the government today allowed prayers in historic Jamia Masjid after eight weeks after traders issued a threat to go on an indefinite strike if the prayers were not allowed in the mosque. No Friday prayers could be offered for the past eight weeks due to restriction in the Masjid, the stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, who is also under house arrest for the past more than a month. However, yesterday shopkeepers and other businessmen under the banner of traders federation hit the streets and threatened to launch agitation if they were not allowed offer Friday prayers and business in the Jamia Market and adjoining areas, which remained under restrictions, particularly on every Friday for the past more than a month. Taking to micro blogging site Twitter, the working president of main opposition National Conference (NC) said “The threat of the local traders that they would go on an indefinite shutdown is what forced the government to allow prayers today." There were no restrictions today and large number of people joined the Friday prayers which were followed by stone pelting, demonstration and bursting of teargas shells. UNI

Appeals civil society to isolate elements who have brought disrepute to Kashmir, its tolerant values
SRINAGAR, JUNE 23: Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has strongly condemned the lynching to death of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Ayub Pandit by an unruly mob outside the historic Jama Masjid, Srinagar during the night long prayers of Shab i Qadr.
Terming the incident as highly shameful, the Chief Minister said what is unfortunate is that the said officer was posted at the grand mosque for its protection and for the facilitation, security and convenience of the devotees and who was killed during Shab i Qadr, the night of divine blessings and seeking Allah’s forgiveness and His generosity.
By this act of cowardice, the Chief Minister said the perpetrators have brought disrepute to the tolerant and accommodative nature of Kashmiri people. She appealed people in general and members of civil society in particular to rise to the occasion and isolate these criminal elements who are giving Kashmir and Kashmiris a bad name.
Later, the Chief Minister visited District Police Lines, Srinagar where she laid floral wreath on the body of late Mohammad Ayub Pandit. She interacted with the officers of JK Police and family members of the DySP and consoled them on his killing.

Minister for Rural Development Department, Abdul Haq Khan; Minister for Education, Syed Altaf Bukhari; Minister for R&B, Naeem Akhtar; Chief Secretary, B. B. Vyas; DGP, Dr. S. P. Vaid; senior officers of civil administration and Police, family members of the slain officer and a large number of people were present on the wreath laying ceremony.
