Munger, Sep 11: Four minor girls drowned while taking bath in a water body in Bihar's Munger district Tuesday, an official said.

Confirming the death of four girls, Kharagpur Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Sanjiv Kumar said the deceased have been identified as Anuradha Kumari, Arti Kumar, Priya Kumar and Ritu Kumari.

The girls residents of Bhadura village and aged between 8-11 years had gone to take a bath in a water body (chaur) and slipped into deep water and met their watery grave, the SDO said, adding that bodies have been fished out with the help of villagers.

The bodies have been sent to Munger sadar hospital for post-mortem, he said while announcing that Rs 3 lakh will be given to each of the deceased's family after the post-mortem. (PTI)

Munger (Bihar), Aug 1: Rescue operations are in full swing here for a three-year-old girl who slipped and fell into a borewell shaft, said to be more than 100 feet deep, last evening, officials said today.

The child - Sanno -had come to her maternal grandparents' home in Murgiyachak locality of the town. Yesterday she was playing near the borewell shaft in the courtyard of the house and fell into it, Munger Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangla told reporters.

"Rescue operations have been on and we are confident that she will be rescued later in the day", the SP said.

He also said "the girl is stuck inside the shaft at a depth of about 45 feet. A team of doctors has been pressed into service and adequate oxygen supply is being ensured with the help of cylinders and pipes".

The SDRF has been here since yesterday and they will soon be joined by a team of the NDRF which is reaching here by a helicopter, the SP said adding that a horizontal access was being dug out to reach the spot.

State disaster management minister Dinesh Chandra Yadav told a news channel "the administrative machinery has been instructed to ensure that the girl is rescued safely. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is personally monitoring the development". (PTI)

Munger, Oct 23: At least five Chhath devotees were killed and several others injured when an express train ran over them near Adalpur Amari halt on Kiul-Jamalpur section of East Central railway today. Jamalpur Police Superintendent (Rail) Shankar Jha said here that Chhath devotees were crossing tracks to catch Barkhari Down DMU at the halt when they were run over by UP Bhagalpur-Danapur Intercity Express. He said that Chhath devotees were going to Ganga Ghat to collect Ganga water here when they were run over by the train. Mr Jha said that the mishap took place when Chhath devotees could not see the express train due to poor visibility caused by dense fog. The injured women had been admitted to Munger Sadar Hospital.
