Chennai, Mar 31: Actor Rajinikanth, who has confirmed his political entry, on Saturday expressed support to the anti-sterlite protests in Tuticorin district, which entered the 48th day today.
The locals were demanding closure of the sterlite copper smelter plant citing various health hazards afflicting the people in the district.
In a tweet, Rajinikanth said ‘I am surprised at the silence of the government on the issue. Because of the pollution from the industry, people are affected with several diseases and hence they are protesting for over 47 days.'
'It is a mystery why the government is not taking any action', he said.
Meanwhile, Makkal Needhi Maiam Founder and actor Kamal Haasan would join the protesters in Tuticorin on Sunday.
Kamal earlier said that 'We cannot allow a Bhopal-like tragedy to happen in Tuticorin.'
The main opposition DMK and other parties have urged the state government to order closure of the Sterlite Industries.
Thousands of people, including women and children, have gathered at Tuticorin town for the past few weeks to protest against the copper smelting factory.
Claiming that the copper plant contaminated the groundwater and caused respiratory problems, residents of Kumarettiyapuram launched an indefinite stir. UNI

Chennai, Dec 12: Despite keeping his eagerly fans waiting about his much-talked political entry, Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth turned 68 on Tuesday.
It might be a low-key birthday celebration for the celebrity actor, but it brought cheers to his fans as he launched the second poster of his upcoming film 'Kaala'.
The second poster was released at midnight on Monday  after the first teaser look was released in May this year.
Sporting a pair of sunglasses and a salt-and- pepper look, the 'superstar' oozes the classic Rajinikanth suave.
Fans of the actor went gaga on social media about the poster release of the film being directed by Pa Ranjith, for whom this would be his second sojourn with the Superstar after the success of the hit film "Kabali'".
Rajini's son-in-law and actor Dhanush, whose Wunderbar Films was producing the movie, tweeted 'Here you go!! The king of  style- our Superstar’s “kaalaa” 2nd look.
#theswagofsuperstar #kaalaa #happybirthdaythalaiva'.
If one goes by the teaser released by Dhanush on his twitter page, the trilingual film would be released in Hindi and Telugu also.
Meanwhile, hundreds of fans gathered in front of his residence at Poes Garden in the city to greet him.
Leaders of various political parties, including DMK Working President M K Stalin, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, TNCC  Chief Su Thirunavukkarasar and BJP state unit President Ms Tamizhisai Soundararajan greeted the actor on his birthday.
There were wide expectations that the actor, who has time and again hinted of taking the proverbial political plunge, would announce his political plans on his birthday.
Asked about the actor's political plans, his brother Sathyanarayana  said 'time is not ripe now'.
But the fans were disappointed as Rajini was mum about his political foray, though they were compensated with the release  of the second poster of his 'Kaala'. UNI
