Washington, Sep 6: Facebook and Twitter are taking steps to prevent foreign interference in the upcoming crucial elections in the US and around the world, top executives of the two social media giants have assured lawmakers during a Congressional hearing.

US intelligence agencies have in the past claimed that Russia meddled in the 2016 US presidential election won by President Donald Trump. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied the claims during a summit with his American counterpart in Helsinki in July.

Chief Operating Officer of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg and Chief Executive Officer of Twitter Jack Dorsey on Wednesday testified before the US Congress during the hearing which came just two months before the midterm elections in the US.

Sandberg told members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence: "We are focused on the upcoming US midterms and on elections around the world. Our efforts in recent elections from Germany to Italy to Mexico to the Alabama special Senate election show us that the investments we are making are yielding results.

"We also know that we cannot stop interference by ourselves. We're working with outside experts, industry, partners and governments, including law enforcement, to share information about threats and prevent abuse".

Facebook is getting better at finding and "stopping our opponents" from financially motivated troll farms to sophisticated military intelligence operations, she said.

"We don't have access to intelligence that the government has, so we don't always know exactly who is behind these attacks or their motives, and that's why we will continue working closely with law enforcement," Sandberg said.

Twitter's Dorsey told lawmakers that his company has made significant progress recently on tactical solutions like identification of many forms of manipulation intending to artificially amplify information, more transparency around who buys ads and how they are targeted, and challenging suspicious logins and account creation.

"We've seen positive results from our work. We're now removing over 200 percent more accounts for violating our policies. We're identifying and challenging 8 to 10 million suspicious accounts every week, and we're thwarting over a half million accounts from logging in to Twitter every single day," Dorsey said.

Twitter has learned from 2016 and more recently from other nations' elections how to protect the integrity of elections; better tools, stronger policy and new partnerships are already in place, he said.

"We intend to understand the efficacy of these measures to continue to get better, but we all have to think a lot bigger than decades past. We must ask the question, what is Twitter incentivising people to do or not do and why? The answers will lead to tectonic shifts in Twitter and our industry operates. Required changes won't be fast or easy," he said.

Responding to a question, Dorsey said Twitter has also learned a lot from elections around the world; most recently, the Mexican election. Twitter opened a new portal to cover that election, that allows any journalist or government law enforcement to actually report any suspicious behaviour very quickly to it, so that they can take more actions.

"Otherwise, we have been investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning models to again recognise the patterns of behaviour because we believe this is where the greatest leverage will come from, recognising how people artificially amplify information and shutting it down before it spreads, into the shared spaces of Twitter and more broadly, into someone's replies to a tweet," Dorsey said.

Sandberg said: "I think we've learned a lot and I think we're going to have to continue to learn because as we learn, our opponents learn and we have to keep up. We're working on technology and investments in people making sure fake news is disseminated less on the platforms, transparency actions and taking down bad actors.

"We have seen everywhere from Mexico to Brazil to other places around the world, these same techniques deploy differently and each time we see it, I think we get smarter, I think we see the new threat and I think we're able to connect the dots and prevent those threats going forward".

Senator Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, expressed concern that social media is vulnerable to corruption and misuse.

The very worst examples of this are absolutely chilling and a threat to democracy, he said.

Ranking Member Senator Mark Warner said that Russians continue to infiltrate and manipulate American social media to hijack national conversation.

"You've gotten better, and I'm pleased to see that you've begun to take action, but also the Russians are getting better as well. They have now become harder to track. Worse, now that the Russian playbook is out there, other adversaries, as we saw recently, like Iran, have joined the fray," he said.

Warner said foreign-based disinformation campaigns represent just a fraction of the challenges.

"Russian disinformation has revealed a dark underbelly of the entire online ecosystem, and this threatens to cheapen American discourse, weaken privacy, erode truth, and undermine our democracy on a previously unimagined scale. Worse, this is only going to get harder as we move into artificial intelligence, use of Deepfake technology," Warner added.

Srinagar, Jul 7 : Two weeks after he took over the reins in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra's official Twitter handle has got several complaints of alleged corruption and other wrongdoings against the previous PDP-BJP coalition government headed by Mehbooba Mufti.

The Twitter handle was set up on June 19, the day Mufti submitted her resignation as chief minister of the state after the BJP pulled out of the government.

The Governor, through Twitter, has been receiving complaints about issues which were considered dead and buried.

The complaints received via the Twitter handle @jandkgovernor range from Mufti removing the director of super-speciality SKIMS hospital and nominating in-service professors as members of the governing council to former speaker and BJP leader Kavinder Gupta's doctor allegedly getting appointed through the backdoor.

PDP youth president Wahid-ur-Rehman Para, who was working as Secretary, JK State Sports Council, is also accused of "adjusting" 250 people in various government departments and public sector undertakings.

"Ex-CM Sahiba (Mehbooba)ruined SKIMS & violated all norms by nominating inservice professors (friends of Dr Manzoor rather) as GB (governing body) members, then victimised all who raised voice - prof ahangar suspended as Director, my resignation was forced, promotion of 4 others stopped," Altaf G Haji, an Onco surgeon tweeted to Vohra.

Another Twitter user brought to Governor's notice the allegations made by a sitting PDP MLA, who had recently revolted against Mufti, about the wrongdoings committed by Para.

"A quota of 250 seats were given to Waheed-ur- Rehman Parra and he adjusted his nears and dears in JK Bank, JKP, Youth Service and Sports and other departments, Ansari alleged. We request Governor for an immediate inquiry commision," Syed Ishfaq wrote.

Pawan Sharma brought to Vohra's notice the appointment of Charu Gupta, daughter of Kavinder Gupta as Dental Surgeon, under the National health Mission.

"No notification, special(ly) crafted posted filled with blink and here general public has to hustle till they get broke to get a single job(.) hope u'll open this case," Sharma said while referring to the appointment.

Vohra's office, through the official Twitter handle, informed all these complainants that a report has been sought from the departments concerned.

A Twitter user from Jammu asked the Governor to start registering the Rohingya refugees in the state in view of national security.

"Sir, please register Rohingya's in Jammu region as they do it in west for the security of their nation. Issue them temporary refugee cards so that their activities are monitored.. otherwise, they will just indulge in anti-India activities. It's high time now," wrote Pratiba Koul.

Another user brought to Vohra's notice the images of Amarnath pilgrims making a line to answer the call of nature on the banks of Dal Lake while heading towards the Baltal base camp.

The photographs went viral on social media here and many netizens called for making the pilgrims aware about the need to protect the environment before they embark on a pilgrimage.

A Twitter user sought Governor's help in getting the horticulture department and other agencies concerned to address the "Alternaria Leaf blotch" -- a fungal disease -- affecting the orchards in Anantnag district.

Vohra's attention was also drawn towards an alleged incident of mass felling of Walnut trees, an offence if done without permission from the authorities concerned, in Budgam district and the "plight of the Bemina area" in terms of development, despite being less than 10 kilometres from the Civil Secretariat -- the seat of state government.

In these cases also, the Governor's office informed the complainants that a written report has been sought from the departments concerned.

While some observers feel that the citizens have more faith in Governor's rule than an elected government, many are cynical about the outcome of reaching directly to the Raj Bhavan with complaints.

"Let us see what action the Governor takes on these complaints ... How many wrong decisions he is able reverse, especially in case of backdoor appointments. Otherwise, we have seen these accountability exercises in the past as well but no action has ever been taken," Shahid Ahmad, a Srinagar resident, said.PTI

New Delhi, Feb 22: He may have time and again expressed his disinclination to enter the political arena but superstar Amitabh Bachchan's decision to follow leaders from the Congress, the Nationalist Congress Party, the National Conference and the Aam Aadmi Party has led to speculation of his renewed interest in happenings in the political arena.
Of late, the megastar has started following several Congress leaders, including party president Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Ahmed Patel, Ashok Gehlot, Ajay Maken, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot and CP Joshi from this month.
He has also been following party spokespersons Randeep Surjewala, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Manish Tewari and Congress leaders Shakeel Ahmed and Sanjay Jha on Twitter.
In fact, Manish Tewari thanked Mr Bachchan for following him. "Thank you Sh Amitabh Bachan for following me and it is my privilege to follow the icon of Indian cinema who we grew up watching first-day first-show every new release. Those days in the late 70s & early 80s a balcony ticket in Chandigarh was Rs 3. Unbelievable today! @SrBachchan," he tweeted.
Of late, the superstar has also started following leaders of several opposition parties. These include RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, his daughter Misa Bharti, his son Tejaswi Yadav, JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar, CPI-M's Sitaram Yechury, NC's Omar Abdullah and NCP's Supriya Sule. He has also been following the official twitter handles of the RJD, the YRS congress party and the Telugu Desam Party.
Further, he has also been following AAP leaders Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai, Sanjay Singh, Kumar Vishwas, Atishi Morlena and Ashish Khetan.
Considering that Mr Bachchan, who has over 30 million followers on Twitter, follows only 1,689 people, his following leaders of several opposition parties has triggered speculation of his renewed interest in politics.
It is notable that the superstar had a brief stint in politics in the 1980s when he, at the insistence of his close friend and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, contested Lok Sabha polls in 1984 and defeated veteran politician HN Bahuguna from Allahabad.
However, after allegations of his and his family's involvement in the Bofors scam surfaced, he resigned from his seat and quit politics.
Mr Bachchan and his family were once close to the Nehru-Gandhi family and he was a friend of Rajiv Gandhi.
However, in recent decades, he has drifted away from the congress with the party recently attacking him on the Panama papers revelations.
Trade sources, however , feel no political meaning should be seen in the superstar following these leaders as it could be a part of his endeavour to keep himself abreast of the political happenings in the country.
In fact, the superstar also follows a number of BJP leaders.
Of late, he has started following union ministers Piyush Goyal, Nitin Gadkari and Suresh Prabhu. He is also following the official twitter handle of the Ministry of Railways and urban development.
Besides, he has also been following various senior journalists Sumit Awasthi, Sudhir Chaudhury and Shubhra Gupta. UNI

Washington, Nov 3: A Twitter employee deactivated Donald Trump’s personal account on their last day of work, the company has said, likely meaning the action was deliberate.
The move by the employee – who has not been named – meant that the president’s @realdonaldtrump account was down for 11 minutes, The Guardian reported.
During the brief period of downtime, shortly before 4pm Pacific time (11pm GMT), anyone going to the @realDonaldTrump Twitter page would see the message “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!”
After widespread speculation about what had happened, Twitter initially said the account had been inadvertently deactivated “due to human error by a Twitter employee”.
“The account was down for 11 minutes, and has since been restored. We are continuing to investigate and are taking steps to prevent this from happening again,” the company said in a statement on Thursday.
But soon after the company’s @Twittergov account posted another statement revealing the outage was due to an employee’s action on their final day in the job. “Through our investigation we have learned that this was done by a Twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee’s last day. We are conducting a full internal review,” the new statement said.
The company did not immediately reply to Guardian requests to clarify the process. The company’s first statement had already stirred some speculation on its own site that a “rogue employee” had been responsible. UNI
